Flyers-Canadiens recap

Canadiens 4, Flyers 3 (OT)

How it happened: A tough penalty call late in the third led to Alex Kovalev's tying goal for the Capitals; a vicious Canadiens rush in the first 48 seconds of overtime led to Tom Kostoupoulos' game-winner.

Hero: Flyers goalie Martin Biron turned away nine strong shots in the first period, including a flurry about 5 minutes into the game, a blast from Tomas Plekanek just before the Flyers' second goal in the first, and, of course, the right-pad denial of Andrei Kostitsyn's penalty shot early in the second and his aggressive poke of Plekanek's breakaway in the second. Yes, he gave up four goals and stopped 30 shots, but, really, he deserved a better fate.

Goat: The on-ice officials, for the kneeing penalty on Mike Richards near the end of regulation; the video-replay cabal in Toronto, for blowing the review of Montreal's second goal, from Kovalev.

Best hit: Near the midpoint of the third period Derian Hatcher planted Sergei Kostitsyn into the glass in the Flyers' end with a resounding thud that drew gasps from the home crowd.

Key number: The Canadiens have beaten the Flyers five times this season and seven straight times overall.

What's next: The Flyers and Canadiens meet tomorrow at the Bell Centre for Game 2.
