How it happened: Tom Poti upended R.J. Umberger 4:15 into overtime, drawing a second tripping penalty - the first one, as blatant, went uncalled - and giving the Flyers the first power play for either team since 6:33 remained in the second period. With 9 seconds left in the power play, Joffrey Lupul deposited a rebound from a Kimmo Timonen shot for his first goal of the series.
What it means: In the second overtime Game 7 in Flyers history, the Flyers evened their record. They lost to Capitals in 1988.
Hero: Flyers goalie Martin Biron withstood withering barrages in the first period and stood tall in a Caps-dominated third period when the Flyers were outshot 15-5. Biron turned away 35 shots in regulation and another four in overtime.
Goat: Flyers defenseman Jason Smith chose to take out Brooks Laich, ignoring the puck near the Flyers' blue line; Laich absorbed the contact and flicked a pass ahead to Alex Ovechkin, who sped in unmolested and ripped a tying goal. Smith was on the ice for 14 of the Caps' 20 goals in the series.
Best hit: Ovechkin's tone-setter 86 seconds into the game, which dislodged Timonen's stick and got the house rocking for the next 10 minutes.
Ovechkin watch: Aggressive and involved, Ovechkin figured out that only he can contain himself. He logged nine shots and three hits; his defense-drawing presence and his energy contributed to the Caps' general edge. He paid dividends with an assist on the Caps' first goal and tied it at 2 with 4:31 left in the second - just after a failed Caps power play. He also fired wide on a turnover with about 2 minutes to play in regulation.
Key number: Biron was 0-4 this season when starting games on back-to-back nights.
What's next: The Flyers travel to Montreal to face the Canadiens, who won Game 7 against the Bruins on Monday.
