Apple of his (black) eye
Their intense rivalry generated some memorable fights, but none more so than the goalie-on-goalie battle between the Avalanche's Patrick Roy and the Red Wings' Chris Osgood in Detroit on April 1, 1998. Roy won that fight - although Osgood got some good licks in - further solidifying himself as a bruiser.
Well, flash forward 10 years and you'll find that the butt-kicking bloodlines run deep in the Roy family.
Roy's son Jonathan is a goal-
tender for the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Patrick Roy is the owner and coach.
And both father and son have been suspended after Jonathan, along with nine others, unleashed their fury during a playoff game with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Saturday night.
The viral video on ESPN.com and youtube.com shows referees attempting to restrain an enraged Jonathan from going after Sagueneens netminder Bobby Nadeau. They failed to hold him back, however, and Jonathan pummels Nadeau to the ground before mixing it up again with another Sagueneens defenseman.
After the melee, Jonathan skated off and delivered a rude gesture to the Chicoutimi crowd.
The fight cost Jonathan a seven-game suspension and his father a five-game dormancy as the league questions his "prejudicial conduct." The video shows the elder Roy gesturing to his son from the bench, but Patrick denies any instigation.
"I acted in an unacceptable fashion for an athlete," Jonathan told reporters Monday. "I acted out of adrenaline and frustration."
No, Jonathan, really? You think?
"What you saw and heard wasn't me; and please know that you will never see behavior like that from me again."
Regardless of the aftermath, one has to wonder if Patrick plays the role of proud papa with the Roy tradition of scrapping still alive and kicking.
And punching. *
