Flyers Notes

Derian Hatcher out for season

PITTSBURGH - As the Flyers had suspected, defenseman Derian Hatcher suffered a fractured right leg Saturday in a 3-2 loss in Boston. He will miss the rest of the regular season.

"He has a small nondisplaced fracture of the tibia and a very severe contusion," general manager Paul Holmgren. "He's probably going to be out a month."

Hatcher was hit by a shot by the Bruins' Andrew Ference in the opening period. Another Flyers defenseman, Randy Jones, missed both games this weekend with a hip flexor.

Winger R.J. Umberger, who has 37 assists and has been a strong addition to Danny Briere's line, suffered a sprained left knee in yesterday's 7-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Umberger banged knees with Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik in the second period.

"The knee is sore but I'll take a couple of weeks and see what happens," said Umberger, who is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks.

"It's disappointing more than anything. It's hard to say, with swelling and inflammation. I never had a knee injury before."

Loose pucks

Scottie Upshall was a healthy scratch, while Jim Dowd, who was scratched in Boston, was back in the lineup. It was the first time this season that Upshall was a healthy scratch.

Inga Saffron: The development sagas of Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Independence Mall are awfully similar. Each started out with the aim of concentrating Philadelphia's cultural power in one part of the city. And after that imperial ambition was thwarted, each remained opposed to bringing commerce into its vision of grandeur.

With the introduction of two new coffee shops, this is finally changing.
