Forsberg’s career could be over

NEW YORK - The endgame might have come for Peter Forsberg.

NEW YORK - The endgame might have come for Peter Forsberg.

In his first big personal test since having his right foot operated on again in the offseason, Forsberg pulled out of the Karjala Cup international tournament saying that he had "made a fool of himself," according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.

"I have to say, I've never been so close to saying my career is over right now," Forsberg told reporters Monday, according to the newspaper.

Forsberg left the Swedish team's first workout Friday after about an hour, according to multiple Team Sweden sources cited in the report.

Forsberg, 34, who was traded from the Flyers to Nashville last season because he could not commit to a long-term contract due to continuing problems with his foot, is a free agent and is a prize that many teams in the league have sought.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren met with Forsberg last weekend over coffee when the Swedish star was in town with a minor hockey team he is sponsoring.

Holmgren said at the time that this tournament was a big test for Forsberg. Holmgren confirmed Monday that Forsberg had pulled out of the tournament.

Forsberg left the ice after practice and told reporters, "I just can't do it."
