The New Jersey Devils signed Kevin Weekes yesterday to back up record-setting goaltender Martin Brodeur.

Weekes, 32, spent the last two seasons with the New York Rangers, appearing in 46 games and compiling a record of 18-20-5.

Weekes is 96-156-38 with 19 shutouts in nine NHL seasons with Florida, Vancouver, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay, Carolina and the Rangers. His career goals-against average is 2.90.

Hasek stays with Wings. Dominik Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms of a one-year contract that is worth more than $2 million in base salary and gives the 42-year-old goalie a chance to earn an additional $2 million in bonuses.

The six-time Vezina Trophy winner and two-time MVP informed the Red Wings that he wanted to play in Detroit again, but it took weeks for the sides to reach a deal.

Prucha re-signs. Forward Petr Prucha agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the New York Rangers, with whom he has scored 52 goals in two seasons.

Prucha, a 24-year-old native of the Czech Republic, will earn $1.6 million each of the next two seasons. He became a restricted free agent after posting 22 goals and 18 assists for the Rangers in 79 games last season.

Penguins retain pair. Forwards Maxime Talbot and Erik Christensen, two of the five potential unrestricted free agents given qualifying offers by the Pittsburgh Penguins, agreed to two-year contracts.

Remaining unsigned are forwards Colby Armstrong and Tim Brent. Defenseman Ryan Whitney signed a $24 million, six-year deal.

The 23-year-old Talbot had 13 goals and 11 assists in 75 games last season. Christensen, 23, had 18 goals and 15 assists in 61 games and tied for the NHL lead with eight shoot-out goals.

Guerin is Island-bound. The New York Islanders finally found a free agent to sign, inking all-star forward Bill Guerin to a two-year deal.

Guerin, a four-time all-star, scored 36 goals last season while splitting time with the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks. He joins a team that suddenly is rebuilding after losing forwards Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Richard Zednik, Viktor Kozlov and defenseman Tom Poti since the free-agent signing period began.

Two head to D.C. The Washington Capitals signed free agent defenseman Jame Pollock and center Kyle Wilson.

Pollock, 28, has spent the last three seasons in Europe, where he led the Sunipret Ice Tigers of the German Elite League with 22 goals and 32 assists in 46 games in 2006-07. He tied the league record for goals by a defenseman.

Wilson recently finished his first season with the Capitals' American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears, where he was the team's rookie of the year. He scored 24 goals and 54 points in 54 games.
