Couturier Out With Head Injury

POSTED: Saturday, December 17, 2011, 2:54 PM

The Flyers were again hit by the injury bug in Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Boston Bruiins at the Wells Fargo Center. The latest injury occurred during a disastrous first period.

Not only were the Flyers outscored, 4-0 in the first period, but rookie center Sean Couturier was lost for the game after suffering a head injury.

With 48.7 seconds remaining in the first period, Couturier was hit in the back of the head on a slap shot by teammate Kimmo Timonen.

Couturier stayed down a few minutes, skated off and it was announced shortly after that he would not return.

Were you saying that before today when he had a 14-5 record?

Sad to see this happen to so many players. Some of the head injuries are unavoidable- but the league is going to have to address this aspect of the game because it is not good for the game and the league- let only the players. Fans pay to see Giroux or Pronger not Shelly.

I get so tired of negativity. Bryz is 14-5 and has played well of late, yet all the sudden, he sucks because he has an off day, which the team did not have Giroux or Pronger against the B's. No to mention that the team in front of him was out-skated all day.

Bryzgalov was not "on" today, but not all of the goals were his fault. Where was the defense today? Regardless of their play, the team did not score ONE goal. So, even if Bryzgalov only let in one, it would not have mattered. The entire team were flat and they made Thomas look even better than he is. They'll come back, but this one was just an entirely bad effort by all of them.

I do hope Couturier is better soon, that was a rough shot.

I said this facetiously once before, but now I mean it.....

Where were all the "upper body injuries", read concussion, when players didn't wear any helmets?

Ok snipes, tell me I'm wrong about Bobrovsky, who had to come to the rescue again. The money spent on Bryzgalov was a public opinion based acquisition. I know Vokoun looked horrendous the other night, but his rental for a year letting Bobrovsky mature would have been the right move. Anyway, chalk this one up to a revenge factor for the Bruins for the opening night loss on their ice, and all the Philly top tier players out with injuries. Unbelievable, all the concussions.

It is an interesting theory. There would be fewer concussions if players didn't wear helmets...of course there would be a significant increase in deaths...but concussions would be down.

So...again...which one of the goals on Bryzgalov was awful. Now watch the 50 foot wrist shot that went right through Bobrovsky. This game was not on the goalie, it was on the lack of preparation that is common place for the Philadelphia Flyers in every afternoon game.

Head injuries were not reported until the last 15 years and modern equipment (hard versus soft) is adding to the problem. Regardless of the history- a league that struggles financially cannot afford to have it's best players out. I suggest you read Ken Dryden's recent article on the problem.

If Couturier has a concussion, then I GIVE UP!!!!! The Flyers are cursed. That would be 4 concussions and the whole league has about 28, now 29 of them. Thats 1 out of 7, way more than their fair share. Whenever this team gets a great player the go down. Lindbergh in the 80s, Lindros' concussions, now Giroux/Pronger/Couturier. 36 years of frustration, and whenever they start looking good the curse kicks in. Anytime someone gets tapped in the head they're done. I'm sick of it.

If Couturier is out for any time, I wonder what the likelihood of re-introducing Blair Betts to the dressing room would be? Already paying him, so why not play him. He will never pass another physical, but I bet he would be willing to play through any issues just to be in the NHL.

Hey semi-troll Hexy, I'm sorry your vocabulary doesn't include the word FACETIOUS. Perhaps you would realize it was a tongue in cheek rhetorical question. BUT,THERE IS A REASON for some of the elevated head injuries, like the speed of the game. Remember that thing called a RED LINE at Center Ice? It tended to slow things down a bit. Others, are outright thuggery in intentional head hits, others just pure chance. Snakebit? You might as well believe in pixies too. It is simply the fact that in every moment, there is an infinite number of purely chance circumstance like positioning, that can cause an injury. The only concussion that burns me , because it was never avenged, was Scott Stevens of the Devils and his elbow to Lindros' head in '97 or '98. Always hated that guy and Dale Hunter. P.S. To all you lame Boston fans who have to come to a foreign board, because you have no friends or life, you're pathetic.

Bryz's GAA and SV% are terrible...don't be fooled by the wins. Leading the league in scoring is masking the ugly truth - Goalie position is still an issue

Although Bryz is 14 & 5 he isn't better then Bob and for the money he seems to struggle in games. He seems very unsure no matter when he is in net. I can't believe the bad luck of this team. I am hoping Giroux and Courturier come back soon at least we can score. But Bryz giving up almost three goals a game makes me nervous. I just want a Cup for this team, is that too much to ask?

I've always thought it is ridiculous to blame or credit a goalie with a loss or a win, as hockey is so obviously a team effort. The goalie has to perform just like anybody else. But the thing that gets me with Bryzgalov is what he's being paid. We could've seen his kind of numbers for half that money.
