It really doesn’t matter what the early spin is on the latest of Flyers injuries. We’ll know more soon enough.

General manager Paul Holmgren didn’t seem to sound  serious alarms after Claude Giroux suffered a head injury and Ilya Bryzgalov suffered a lower body injury in Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

We’ve learned with the Flyers and really, any professional team, that initial statements mean very little.

Holmgren said Giroux was examined by a doctor and was feeling better. He said Giroux was held out of the third period for precautionary measures.

When asked if Giroux was experiencing any headaches, Holmgren replied, “not really headaches. This was really just precautionary at this stage.”

Not really headaches?

Again, it makes no sense to probe into whether Giroux is hurt or not or to what degree. Everybody knows how lingering head injuries can be, but it’s fruitless to speculate because nobody, including the doctors, could tell right away.

Giroux will be examined again Sunday and more will likely be known.

Teams, and it’s not just the Flyers, tend to suggest a player isn’t seriously hurt at first. And it’s not just with head injuries. How many tweaked hamstrings or groins turn into an extended time off for athletes of any sport?

Teams can’t be blamed for wishful thinking. In this media-driven world, we all want immediate answers. With most injuries, more is known as the days go by.

Bryzgalov tried to make light of things.

At first he told the media that he left the game for an equipment issue. Of course he departed with 13:01 left in the third period and no equipment issue takes that long to take care of.

When he was pressed, Bryzgalov finally came clean.

“I’m a bad liar,” he said.

That drew plenty of laughter, but no disagreement.

Then Bryzgalov decided to tell the truth.

“It was starting to bother me more and more during the game and we decided to be safe,” he said.

Both Holmgren and Bryzgalov seem to think he shouldn’t be sidelined.

We’ll see.

The Flyers have survived so many injuries and still lead the Eastern Conference, but losing Giroux, who has played at an MVP level, would be the biggest of challenges to overcome.

One thing about Flyers coach Peter Laviolette is that he continues to have the mentality that he’ll compete with the available players. Nobody is probably more frustrated by the rash of injuries the Flyers have suffered, but Laviolette never makes excuses and attempts to plow along.

“Certainly any time a player is removed from the lineup it’s disappointing,” he said. “You know Claude is off to a terrific start and has been a very important piece for a lot of different reasons for our club, and any time a player like that comes out of the game you’re missing him.”

Then quickly Laviolette brought out the positive aspects of his team and how the Flyers played in the third period without Giroux.

“I thought the guys really picked it up for him in the third period and played an excellent defensive period, still created some scoring chances and we were able to win the game and that’s a good thing, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see right now,” Laviolette said.

Waiting will be the most difficult part – for Giroux and the Flyers alike.

Without Giroux, this team will collapse. Remember all the questions about where the offence will come from,,,well, the answer has been Claude Giroux! Without him, this team will need large efforts from guys like JVR and Courturier. Bryzgalov will likely get a game off, and be ready for the next 10. As far as Pronger, well, the team does better without him in the lineup. And they get a lot of practice too.

Hexy4GM, are you sure your really a Flyer fan? "...this team will collapse." Really? What has happened this year to support that statement? All this team has done is get better and better despite playing with so many rookies.

Cload, as Coastsie calls him, may only need a few days off. He can take the train to DC for the Caps game on Tuesday, if he has any concussion symptoms....though Montreal on Thursday....got to fly however.

Me stop drinking the Kool-aid? So, I say that the Flyers number one center, who leads the NHL in scoring, has been in-on 40% of the teams goals, averages 4 minutes per game MORE than any other forward...I say his loss will drastically hurt the team, and you say I am drinking the Kool-aid? The centermen for this team now go, Briere, Talbot, Courturier, and Rinaldo. They are the highest scoring team in the league, but it is because of Claude Giroux. As I said in my post, they will need guys like JVR and Courturier to step up. Courturier has been a little soft on the puck offensively (he has been astounding defensively), and JVR has shown flashes, but not been consistently dominant with the puck.

Hexy, slip Briere between Hartnell and Jagr,I would be surprised if it did not work.Couturier looked good
with Jagr in the 3rd period last night also,Jaromir
would make the 4th line dangerous he can play with anybody,in the short run Im not to worried, lets see who
steps up.Just hope were not going to be fed some day to day prognostic and out indefinitely in a few weeks.I don't think the Flyers are a one dimension team like they were in the Lindros years, but that remains to be seen right? As for Pronger the stats support the team being more successful with him in the line up,he was also very solid during the cup run Hey the Hawks haven't
found the puck of the winning goal yet...the badmouth will say Leighton as never seen it,ha ha...
    Did anyone mention Koo-aid?
Kool-aid and a case of Tastycakes please!!!

Briere's defensive skills are an absolute liability. He has always been able to produce offensively, but Giroux is an incredible player without the puck, as well. His tenacity and desire is what makes him elite. I love the things that Courturier does on the defensive side of the puck, but he hasn't shown the killer instinct at the net yet (see his 2 glorious chances last night where he let up on the puck for just a second). I will say it again, the numbers without Pronger in the lineup, are better than when he plays. It is statistical fact. I have seen some people refer to an article that was posted last week, but that article was a snapshot. It did not take all games into consideration, only the past 2 seasons...and when you look at how they played last night, you see that Pronger is just a bit part on the team. He is a good bit part to have...but he is not the be-all-end-all of this team. Giroux just may be. This team is a little thin at the centre position. I think they may try Matt Read centring the top line if Giroux is out...although, I will add that I do not believe that Giroux will miss any action.

Defensive liability should not be an issue here when
you have been writting/worriyng about goal production
all afternoon Hexy. And predicting a total collapse,I don't no?Some people were predicting a serious goal
drought this year without 18,17 and 22.So far so good.
The Febuary/March stretch will be the test, lots of young players on the team who will learn under
pressure, lets wait and see how it turns out,Pronger at that time, wil be important.

Enjoy the ride,it has'nt been to bad so far Hexy, and if you really want to see the team in last place, turn the
    standings up side down :)

    No hard feelings !!!

You have me mistaken with someone else. I rarely care about pure offensive production. I like hockey players that play a well rounded game. And, defensive liabilities are usually chasing the puck, instead of creating offence with it. I really don't care about the regular season, and the standings. I want to see this team win the Stanley Cup. Last year (and dragging into this year) I was criticized here for complaining that goaltending was too weak. I think last season's playoffs proved me correct. I don't fly off the handle with one performance, I see the season as a whole. Others should try it. Can you honestly say that this team will be fine without Giroux?

    28 = Magic
You know, that I know, that Flyers are a much better team
with 28 in the line up.
Teams with high offensive production are one hot goaltender away from elimination in the playoffs, for sure, remember the Oilers of the 80's,records for goals
in a season, eliminated by the Islanders in the playoffs
    just like that.
The rookies are the angular piece here,in a few months,
be patient, I want them to win a Cup just like you do,
this team is the quickest Flyers line-up in a long, long
time maybe the quickest ever, the transition game is the fastest since when? Can't remember. The D and Goaltending will need to be solid when crunch time arrives of course but the kids will have to rise to the occasion also...and there's a lot of kids.Don't forget when you have the puck on your stick, don't
worry about defence...go.The future looks bright for the Flyers,is it all about this year?...I don't think so
but I hope for the best.
I know you get the nuance of the game Hexy, always fun to exchange with you, kinda weird we can do it without slinging mud at each other,a privilege...gotta go catch
the Cowboys and the Giants game, hate to say this on a
    Philly web-site...I'm a Cowboys fan!!!
