Fantasy stars and stiffs from Sunday's games

A look back at the best and worst fantasy performances for Week 5.

FANTASY STARS, stiffs and surprises of Week 5 through Sunday's games. And guessing Jimmy Garappolo won't get his job back after the Patriots' Week 6 bye.

Came up big

* Tom Brady, QB, Patriots: Three touchdowns, 406 yards. The only thing this guy does wrong is support Donald Trump.

* Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Cowboys: Ran for 134 yards and two TDs. His 60-yard burst up the middle was impressive.

* Ben Roethlisberger: Four more TDs and 380 yards passing. In his last 134 passing attempt, Big Ben has 10 TDs and one interception.

* T.Y. Hilton, WR, Colts: Caught 10 of his 11 targets for 171 yards and a score. It's his second monster game in three weeks.

* David Johnson, RB, Cardinals: Star of Thursday night's game with 157 yards and two TDs.

* Amari Cooper, WR, Raiders: Scored his first TD of the season and could have had a few more. His 138 yards was a season high – and he was on my bench in favor of Mike Evans. Grrr.

Let us down

* Julian Edelman, WR, Patriots: New England scored 33 points, rolled up more than 400 passing yards and nobody invited Edelman (five catches, 35 yards, no TDs).

* Jarvis Landry, WR, Dolphins: Three catches for 28 yards. His three opportunities broke an eight-game streak of double-digit targets.

* C.J. Anderson, RB, Broncos: Had 41 yards rushing, his third straight game with less than 50.

* Lamar Miller, RB, Texans: Twenty yards rushing and still hasn't scored a touchdown.

* A.J. Green, WR, Bengals: If we wanted a 4-50 stat line, we would have started the Jets' Quincy Enunwa, who had 4-51.

* Julio Jones, WR, Falcons: Has 329 receiving yards in his last two games. He had 300 last week and 29 on Sunday. Heck, Nelson Agholor had 27.

Where'd he come from?

* Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans: Accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one running) after going scoreless each of the last two weeks – not easy for a quarterback to do in today's NFL. Plays Cleveland next week.

* Tevin Coleman, RB, Falcons: Put up 132 receiving yards on the Broncos, which came into the day second in the league in passing defense. Previous receiving yardage high against Denver was 91 by Carolina's Kelvin Benjamin in Week 1.

* Sammie Coates, WR, Steelers: Had a solid 6/139/2 day, but it could have been much, much better if not for four drops.

* Adam Thielen, WR, Vikings: Stepped in for Stefon Diggs with seven catches, 127 yards and the second touchdown of his three-year career.

* Brian Hoyer, QB, Bears: Look who's thrown for 300 yards and two touchdowns in three consecutive games. Chicago is hosting Jacksonville next week.

* Cameron Meredith, WR, Bears: Immediate beneficiary of teammate Kevin White's leg injury. Career game was marred by a killer fumble late in the fourth quarter.

Did you notice?

* Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has scored at least one touchdown in each game. But he fumbled for the second consecutive contest as well. Gets the Broncos on Thursday night.

* Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is up to 155 pass attempts without throwing an interception, most ever for a rookie. Carson Wentz had a run of 134 before throwing a pick at the end of Sunday's loss to the Lions. The overall record is 358 set by Tom Brady in 2010-11.

* Patriots TE Martellus Bennett had the first three-TD game of his career. He has now caught touchdowns from three quarterbacks who've won Super Bowls. His first career TD came from Brad Johnson. He caught five from Eli Manning. And Sunday's hat trick came courtesy of Tom Brady.

* Bills RB LeSean McCoy ran for 150 yards, but had two touchdowns vultured.

* New England's Rob Gronkowski (109) was the only tight end with 100 receiving yards.

* Odell Beckham kissed the practice kicking net after scoring his first touchdown of the season Sunday night. It was a humorous gesture after the net famously got the better of him during Beckham's tantrum in Week 3.

That's not nice

Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith came into Sunday's game with 172 yards in his two seasons, exploded for nine catches, 130 yards and a score. It was another step toward erasing a cruel joke at his expense during the 2015 draft.

Meredith, who played at Illinois State, received a phone call from someone purporting to be Bill Belichick. The heartless prankster told Meredith the Patriots were going to select him at the end of third round.

Meredith was surprised when the Pats took defensive end Geneo Grissom, instead.

The fourth round came and went. So did the fifth, sixth and seventh. Meredith, who never did get drafted and signed with the Bears as a free agent, said the hoax just made him redouble his commitment to becoming an NFL player. Well done, young man.
