The Eagles signed defensive end Steven Means to a one-year contract extension through 2018, rewarding a player who has excelled this offseason and helping Means' candidacy to make the 53-man roster.

Means, 26, joined the Eagles in 2015. He made the team last season and had one sack in eight games. Competing with Alex McCalister for a depth defensive end spot this summer, Means has stood out. He has 2 1/2 sacks in the preseason and has played well in practice, too. He's still behind Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry, Derek Barnett, and Chris Long on the depth chart, but the Eagles like to rotate their defensive ends and Means has earned consideration for the rotation.

The Eagles must cut their roster to 53 plays by 4 p.m. on Saturday. The final preseason game is Thursday at 7 p.m. against the New York Jets.
