Give it to Brinkley

NOW LIVING his life as a San Diego Chargers halfback, Curtis Brinkley had a heck of a night in Monday's 35-14 win over the Broncos.

Even if it only was for one play.

Brinkley, a 2004 West Catholic gridiron standout who still holds the city rushing record, made his NFL debut Monday night just hours removed from the Chargers' practice squad.

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Brink-ley made his debut in the fourth quarter with under 2 minutes remaining as a back to block and chew clock. Instead, he broke a 9-yard run off a play meant for someone else.

"When I first went out there, the play was for the fullback," said Brinkley, 25. "Everybody wanted to see me run the ball, so somehow, the play got changed. That was exciting, to have everybody in the huddle wanting to see me run the ball."

Brinkley didn't disappoint, and San Diego needed just a few kneel-downs to secure its fifth win.

"I've been waiting for that all my life," said Brinkley, whose fledgling career was interrupted when he was shot twice last year in Cheltenham in a case of mistaken identity. "That was a long time coming, and it means the world to me."

Proud to be an American

Union midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi will receive his citizenship today along with 69 others at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Offices. In a twist, Miglioranzi, 33, a native of Brazil, could find himself as a new American playing in Canada, should Vancouver snag him off the Union's unprotected list in today's MLS expansion draft (which also includes Portland). It's unlikely but possible.

Mugler's moment

Ken Mugler, who was Villanova's sports information director when he was ordered out of his benchside seat by a referee for baiting officials in a game against Penn in 1964, will have no such problem on Dec. 2. Mugler will receive the South Philadelphia High School "Award of Excellence" at the Waterfall Room (2nd & Snyder). Mugler is a 1954 graduate of South Philly High.
