Eagles-Bears key pregame statistics to know | Paul Domowitch

Fast starts have been huge for the Eagles this year. They've scored 57 points on their first two possessions.

Some semi-interesting stats to get you ready for today's Eagles-Bears game:

Turnover battle

  1. The Eagles are second in the league in turnover differential (plus-10). The defense has an NFL-high 14 interceptions, including 11 in the last five games.

  2. Seven of the Eagles' 14 interceptions have been on third down. That's the most in the league. The Ravens have six, and the Chiefs have five. No one else has more than four on third down.

  3. The Eagles are first in the league in red-zone offense. They've converted 25 of 34 trips inside the 20 into touchdowns (73.5 percent), including 15 of 17 in the last five games.

  4. The Eagles have scored 57 points on their first two possessions this season (six touchdowns, five field goals). They are averaging 5.4 yards per play on their first two possessions. Opponents have scored just 15 points on their first two possessions (no TDs, five FGs) and have averaged 3.6 yards per play.

  5. The Eagles have outscored opponents in the first quarter, 71-18. They've outscored teams in the first three quarters, 232-105.

  6. Through the first 10 games, 64.9 percent of the Eagles' offensive plays have been run out of shotgun (428 of 659).

  7. Four hundred of the Eagles' 659 offensive plays, or 60.7 percent, have been run with 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, three wide receivers). Run-play percentage out of 11 personnel is 45.2 percent. They've used 12 personnel (one RB, two TEs, two WRs) on 162 plays (24.6 percent). Run-play percentage out of 12 personnel is 45.7 percent.

Pass defense

  1. The Eagles, who didn't allow a touchdown pass to the Cowboys last week, have allowed more than one TD pass just once in the last six games (three vs. the Redskins). They have given up 14 so far this season. At this pace, they would finish with 23. That would be the fewest allowed by the Eagles since 2008, when they gave up 19.

  2. The defense has a 46.6 opponent passer rating on third down. They have a 50.5 opponent completion percentage on third down. Just 28 of their opponents' 113 third-down pass attempts have resulted in first downs (25.7 percent). That's the best in the league.

  3. Slot cornerback Patrick Robinson is having one of the best seasons of his career. Just 54.5 percent of the passes in his direction have been caught, according to Pro Football Focus. That's the best completion percentage of his career. He has eight deflected passes in 55 targets this season He had just seven in 101 targets the last two years.

  4. Last week, the Eagles blitzed Dak Prescott on just seven of 29 dropbacks (19.4 percent). For the season, the Eagles have blitzed on 97 of 424 pass plays (22.9 percent). Opponent passer rating when the Eagles have blitzed is 48.3 (46.6 completion percentage, 4.7 yards per attempt). Opponent passer rating when they have blitzed on third down is 12.1 (29.1 completion percentage, 3.3 yards per attempt)

Carson city

  1. Carson Wentz leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 25. He's thrown 19 in the last six games. The franchise record for TD passes in a season is 32 by Sonny Jurgensen in 1961.

  2. Eleven of Wentz's 25 TD passes have been on third down. Wentz leads the league in third-down passer rating (124.4). He's thrown at least one third-down TD pass in seven of the Eagles' 10 games. Last season, he threw three third-down TD passes the entire season.

  3. Wentz has thrown just three interceptions in his last 246 attempts.

  4. Wentz has been sacked just five times on 96 third-down dropbacks. That's the fourth-fewest among quarterbacks with at least 70 third-down attempts.

  5. The Eagles are the only team in the league that hasn't had a turnover or allowed a sack in the red zone. Wentz has completed 64.3 percent of his passes in the red zone.

  6. Wentz has attempted 49 passes that have traveled 20 yards or more. He has completed 17 of them. He has six TD passes and three interceptions on throws of 20-plus yards. His passing numbers from other distances: 11-19 yards: 40 for 65, 648 yards, nine TDs, zero interceptions; 0-10 yards: 106 for 146, 939 yards, eight TDs, two INTs; behind the line of scrimmage: 27 for 37, 174 yards, two TDs, zer0 INTs.

Ground and pound

  1. The Eagles are averaging 31.6 rushing attempts per game, which is the second-most in the league. Since Week 3, they are averaging 34.4 per game. They have a 52.4 run-play percentage since Week 3.

  2. The Eagles are second in the league in rushing (144.6 yards per game) despite having just one individual 100-yard game (136 by LeGarrette Blount in Week 4 vs. the Chargers). They have rushed for 190-plus yards in four of their last eight games. In their last two games, they've rushed for 412 yards on 70 carries (5.9 yards per carry).

  3. Carson Wentz has 17 rushing first downs. That's the sixth-most among quarterbacks. Cam Newton has the most — 31. Russell Wilson is second with 21.

  4. Seventy-one of LeGarrette Blount's 122 carries have come on first down. He's averaging 4.83 yards per carry on first down.

  5. Ninety-two of Blount's 122 carries (75.4 percent) have been from under center. He's averaging 5.2 yards per carry on plays from under center and just 2.7 on plays out of shotgun. As a team, the Eagles are averaging 5.4 yards per carry out of shotgun and just 3.8 from under center.

  6. In his first two games with the Eagles, Jay Ajayi is averaging 12 yards per carry on first down and 13 yards per carry on second down.

  7. Corey Clement has six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving) on just 57 touches. He has 14 rushing first downs on 54 carries.

  8. The Eagles have 44 runs of 10-plus yards. That is tied (with Dallas) for the most in the league.

Catching on

  1. Alshon Jeffery leads the Eagles in third-down receptions. He has 15. Twelve of them have resulted in first downs. He had a career-high 25 third-down catches (21 for first downs) with the Bears in 2013.

  2. Tight end Zach Ertz has just six catches for 42 yards in his last two games. Slot receiver Nelson Agholor, who had 24 catches for 366 yards and five TDs in the Eagles' first seven games, has just 6 for 60 yards and no TDs in the last three games.

  3. Rookie WR Mack Hollins has been targeted 11 times and has 10 receptions.

  4. Seven different receivers have red-zone TD catches for the Eagles. Four have at least two. Ertz and Jeffery have combined for 10.

Bears stuff

  1. Bears running back Jordan Howard, who is third in the league in rushing with 841 yards, was taken three picks ahead of the Eagles' Wendell Smallwood in the fifth round of the 2016 draft.

  2. The Bears are averaging 29.0 rushing attempts per game. They have a 48.2 run-play percentage.

  3. Mitch Trubisky averaged just 16 pass attempts in his first three NFL starts, including just seven attempts against Carolina. He's averaged 32.3 attempts in his last three starts.
