Dallas Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott suspended six games

Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy:

As the NFL's release says, Elliott has been under investigation over domestic violence allegations for more than a year, relating to incidents in February and July of 2016.

The full text of the letter that the NFL sent to him is available here. It states that the league concluded Elliott's acts suggest "a pattern of poor judgment and behavior for which effective intervention is necessary for your personal and professional welfare, and that "another violation of this nature may result in your suspension or potential banishment from the NFL."

At least the letter ends on a positive note.

"You will have substantial resources available to you from your club, and from our office, to assist you in learning how to make better decisions and avoid problematic situations," it says. "If you genuinely learn from this incident, and commit yourself to continued personal development, there is every reason to be optimistic about your future in and beyond the NFL."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport notes that Elliott loses $8 million in guaranteed money once the suspension begins.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that "there are people in and around the Cowboys organization who are growing increasingly concerned about Elliott's lifestyle and choices. Elliott has become known for frequenting Dallas nightclubs, and there are concerns about the way he has conducted himself."

Elliott is the third Cowboys player who will miss games this year because of a suspension. Defensive end Randy Gregory was banned for the season over repeated violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy, and defensive end David Irving is out for the first four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Sunday, Oct. 1: vs. Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, Oct. 22: at San Francisco 49ers

The Cowboys won't play the Eagles until Nov. 19, Week 10 of the season, at AT&T Stadium. The teams will meet again at Lincoln Financial Field on Dec. 31, the final day of the regular season.
