Won-ith By Air, Lose-ith By Feet

POSTED: Sunday, August 12, 2012, 12:20 AM

If the Eagles are to make any kind of NFL waves this season, they are going to have to do so with Michael Vick’s arm, and not so much his legs.

Through his career, Vick has averaged more yards per rushing attempt (7.16) than he has yards per passing attempt (7.06) ... Hard to do.

Those numbers are swayed by his years in Atlanta, when he averaged close to 10 yards a carry, but he has managed to gain nearly seven yards a pop running the pill with the Eagles.

By the way, we’d be perfectly fine if his only rushing attempts this season were end-of-game kneeldowns to run out the clock and secure another Birds victory.

Here are Vick’s year-by-year rushing and passing averages:

I noticed you mentioned arms and legs but not brains. Did you leave that out on purpose?

Okay listen I am not MV7 hater, but I don't know if Vick is the right qb to lead this team. I have always given him the benefit of the doubt. This offense is very good and he should be able to succeed with it. I know it is only a few plays but I watched him qb the other night and that first sack was 100% his fault. He needed to sit in the pocket and let the play develop or take off. I think he wanted to take off but realized he needed to give the play time to develop. In contrast RG3 looks like a passer who can run. Vick's feet started to jump around and you can't do that if you want to be successful.

I think he needs to use his legs wisely. He can outrun most defensive backs. They should not try to make him a pocket passer. And yes he is the guy to lead them to the SB. If he stays healthy this team will go a long way.

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
