Will Reggie Brown have a place with the Eagles in 2009? (AP / File photo)

Reggie Brown is happy to be in Philadelphia -- for now.

The Eagles wide receiver said he's out to prove himself after a disappointing 2008 season.

But if he feels he should be on the field, and the coaching staff thinks differently, well, there could be some problems.

"I’m just gonna make the best out of what I have right now," Brown said during an interview on Comcast SportsNet. "I don’t think I’m gonna force the issue too much unless I have to. Unless things start to decline to me not playing at all when I know I should be and everyone know I should be. Then I might push the issue a little bit, but right now I’m just trying to focus on what I have to do to become a better receiver."

Brown caught 18 balls for 252 yards and one touchdown last season, all career lows. The Eagles obviously didn't think he could make much of a contribution, as they deactivated him for the NFC championship game against the Cardinals.

"For me personally, it was a very disappointing year," Brown said. "I wasn’t able to get out there and help the team to victories like I wanted to. There was a little bit of uncertainty there, how I fit in the offense, but that’s something I try to leave in the past. I really didn’t want to dwell on it and have it affect my performance."

The Eagles, of course, drafted Jeremy Maclin in the first round of last month's draft. They also dealt veteran Greg Lewis to the Patriots.

If you look at the team's completely unofficial depth chart, which is put together by the Web guys, Brown is listed as a second-stringer behind DeSean Jackson.

Brown said his approach is to work hard, improve and play well in practice so that the coaches will have no choice but to get him on the field.

"I’m gonna go out there and prove myself, and I feel like no matter who's out there, I’m gonna go out there and do my thing and they can’t ignore it," he said. "You can’t ignore someone out there making plays everyday against some of the best corners in the league."

The Eagles' coaching staff and front office have backed Brown all offseason.

Here's what Andy Reid told the Inquirer's Bob Brookover back in March:

"He's got a lot of good football ahead of him. It's not that Reggie can't play. He's got to come in and play like the rest of them do. There's competition there. If somebody snoozes, then they're not going to be the one playing, whoever it is."

Brown is the odd man out. If he has something left in the tank, he should want to go somewhere else. Realistically, Avant and Baskin have established good roles int he offense. jackson and curtis are effectively the starters. Maclin is locked in for several years which makes Brown #6. he should be in the prime years of his career instead of at the back of the pack.

You know the Eagles...the fact that they are saying good things about Brown mean he is a good as gone...they just want to be able to get something for him in a trade.

Either he is lazy, mentally soft, or has regressed physically. There's really no room for someone like him.

Love that Reid called Reggie a "snoozer." In this economy it may be hard for a slow possession receiver with questionable hands, fear of going over the middle, and inadequate physical and mental preparation, to find work in the NFL.

Hopefully they can get something for him. Maybe some 2 liter sodas or a roll of cottonelle.

His role changed with Jackson coming aboard and was running the wrong routes in the games. He doesn't have bad hands or a fear of going over the middle, or just a slow possesion receiver. The ment preparation is where he failed. He was taken off the field cause he was in the wrong spots when his number came up. NFL is all timing at that level, He was useless to McNabb because when he looked where he was supposed to be he and was not there. QB's don't actually look at the whole field or find a receiver, they look at certain spots on the field at specific times. @dutchman who is baskin? At least get the names right and offenses don't work that way. Different formations require different skills its not just receiver 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.

Does anyone else see the next WR controvery? Maclin's contract versus DeSEan Jackson's contract. Does anyone know what Jackson makes?

Sheil - do us a favor and stop stirring up controversy b/c you can't think of something original to write.

Dear Philly.com Staff: The media in Philly is a story in and of itself. Writing speculative stories, such as this one, does nothing to further the good of the teams or the city. In fact it does nothing at all except get picked up by the national bandwidth. Next thing you know we'll hear: "Reggie Brown wants out of Philly." This is not journalism - this is simply speculation. Thank you Sheil for pointing out the obvious, that we have an abundance of WRs, but is it really necessary to get Reggie Brown to comment on something like this?

I hope Reggie realizes that no Eagles receiver drafted by Andy Reid has ever gone to another team and had success. If you cant make the Eagles as a receiver, then you will not have success anywhere else (see Pinkston, FredX, McMullen, etc...)
