This is an Eagles blog, but any Philadelphia sports fan should be offended by the conclusions reached by the folks at Men's Health on this one ...

In its July/August issue, the magazine ranked the sports obsession levels of fans in cities around the country.

Philly was listed as No. 84. Yes, No. 84 and earned a grade of D-.

As we mentioned this to folks around Eagletarian headquarters, each had the same quizzical look on his face and said, "Eighty-fourth? Eighty-fourth?"

Here is a sense of the criteria the magazine used: how many people attended baseball, basketball, and football games (college and pro), and attendance at high school events. NASCAR attendance was factored in as was numbers for TV and radio audiences, the Scarborough Sports Marketing figures on the number of people vying for tickets, sales of team gear and how many people identify themselves as fanatics.

Here are the six cities that earned A's:

1) Arlington, Texas  A+

2) Aurora, Colo.  A+

3) Colorado Springs, Colo.  A+

4) Indianapolis  A

5) Columbus, Ohio  A-

6) Jacksonville, Fla.  A-

Forth Worth and Dallas were next, giving Texas three of the top eight.

At least, Philly can say it is better than New York, which came in 88th and also with a D-.

Or Los Angeles at No. 91, another D-

Or Miami, the bottom of the list, at No. 100, with an F.

The magazine touted that the complete list would be on its Web site here. Although we could see how you might be distracted by the article titled, "What Erin Andrews wants in a man."

Good grief ...

reek don't be an idiot...There were phillies decorations out all season long. They had to keep the stores open for the new stuff coming in, and yes, the front runners..Don't be stupid, please...Besides that, if we are ONLY counting front runners...our front runners dished out more money in a weekend then they have in years.

It's not fair that they count high school sports in this poll. Nobody goes to high school in Philadelphia. Shouldn't extra points have been given for the Einsteins who can spell "E-A-G-L-E-S...Eagles!" when only spotted the 'E', 'A' and 'G'?

It just means that people in Philly and New York have real lives and don't need a team to give them their ONLY identity.

To: Dear, sweet reek3232 From: Buckeye70 Re: Huh? Let's see -- you Agree with Men's (mental?) Health Magazine, then? Ummm, let's review... Eagles -- Sold out for the last decade and foreseeable future Phillies -- 30 sellouts in 37 home games thru Sat. 7/4 Flyers -- Occasional pockets of single-seats up top, but most home games sold out...One of the attendance cornerstones in the N.H.L. and one of the best T.V. ratings towns in the League Sixers -- OK, sometimes a hot-and-cold situation. But still, struggling to make the playoffs, and without a massive season-ticket base, played to 80% capacity, a number that jumped dramatically in the second half of the season. College basketball -- You kidding? Check the 'Nova attendance at the Wach (nearly totally sold out), Temple drawing good crowds to Liacouras Center, St. Joe's at both the Palestra and of course tiny fieldhouse, LaSalle at Gola Center and Palestra -- at least semi-respectable and Penn, which tops the Ivy in attendance most years. Wanna throw in Haverford, Delaware Valley, Widener, Swarthmore, Ursinus for the mix? College football attendance isn't good, but show me a major metro that fulfills the above requirements where it is. And don't give me L.A.laland, because that clearly is an enthusiasm-challenged sports town. So exactly WHAT do you base your argument on? You think Philly wasn't nuts during the Penguins series? Any N.F.L playoff? Baseball??? Gimme a friggin' break.

Well....never mind about it guys. The magazine's take is from a different perspective. A young, Ivy-league, arristocratic, live-in-a-bubble, perspective. Philly is a blue coller, lay-it-out-on-the-line city...so what did you expect? People like Jennifer Gardner and Ben Affleck enjoy going to Fenway Park...'cause Boston fits that image. But they'd never want to be willingly seen in a Philly park. They'd duck their heads everytime they'd notice the cameras panning through the crowds. Image and association is everything....

I agree with flyler: they are idiots. And to reek: don't forget the emotions involved in these teams. Yeah, I get sick of each of our teams- sometimes for whole seasons. I get so disgusted with them, I feel sick. Then, I compose myself and can watch my team again. And every once in awhile, only three times in as many decades that I have been alive, all of our cheers and jeers are rewarded with a championship.

There is obviously some flaw in their criteria related to the population of the city. A limited number of people can attend games due to seating capacities so bigger cities are always going to have a lower percentage of people at the games. They aren't factoring in people that follow games on the TV, radio or internet. Also, there doesn't seem to be any weighting towards particular levels of sports. Other than parents of players, you probably get very few high school sports fans who are obsessive about their teams as pro sports fans. Basically, that article is worthless.

Hey reek3232, people were waiting in line at Modells to get Phillies gear with NL Champs and WS Champs on it, not because they didn't own anything with Phillies on it. There are bandwagon fans out there, as there are in every city. But The point is that Philly fans don't focus as much in College and other sports outside the 4 major ones. Which is understood considereing all the different Colleges in the area, alot of the fans devotion even go outside the area like Penn State, and Nascar isn't popular here.

When you're in an area with this density of population, if even a very small percent jump on the bandwagon, you have lines around the block.

Well, the rankings are based on overall sports. The loser cities mentioned don't have muich in terms of professional sports so they have to watch high school games. If the rankings were based on professional sports, Philadelphia would be up there. Plus, Mens Health sux. They recycle articles as often as the Daily News & the StINkQUIRER.

"great" fans don't "turn" on their teams, they hold them accountable for poor play. I have NEVER understood the attitude that at sporting events you should support striking-out, fumbling, turning over the puck, or otherwise screwing up with *cheers.* Those things should be *booed.* There's a difference for rooting for a bad team and cheering them on, which we do by going to the games and wanting them to do well and verbally supporting individual bad plays, which makes no sense. People not from Philly don't seem to understand this, which vexes me.

Philadelphia has better than average sports fans. My ratings are as follows: Pro Football A; College Football F; Baseball B; Pro Basketball C; College Basketball B; Hockey A. That's a 2.67 GPA on the "major sports". Hardly what I would call an "obsessed" group. Other sports such as NASCAR and HS Football should not count in Philly. If you don't take the course, you shouldn't get graded on it.

Where in Philly some are but there is a whole bunch of pople who don't care about sports at all. Think about it. I think it was based on all sports not the big 5 (football NBA,Hockey, baseball) Philly has the best fan base by far for those sports and I'v seen alot of games in different towns. Actually, this makes a lot of sense. The top cities are not ones that have a strong sense of place. In Philadelphia, sports teams compete for limited time and money - in actual tickets but also in having people with nothing better to do than turn on CSN every night - with a Big Five orchestra, numerous museums, literally hundreds of music venues big and small, etc. I bet that among the places that are, if I may be forgiven for saying so, 'real places,' Philadelphia finishes quite high on the sports fanatics list.

As a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, I would agree with this. In the 70's and early 80's this town was maybe a C+, but it is pretty much about the Eagles here. I thought it was funny that, when the Phillies were making their World Series run last year, Modells had to stay open late because the lines were so long. Why? Because so many people didn't own one thing with PHILLIES on it. They should have just had bandwagons in town for everyone to jump on. The Phillies were in a playoff race in 2001, I was there in early Sept when 15,000 showed up against the Reds during the pennant chase. And we tout the Big 5, but most college B-ball teams are playing to sold out venues far bigger than we have here. No one talks big 5 until the NCAA's. We have a D-1 football team in town, and no one cares. This is not a sports town, except for the Eagles and anyone sniffing around a championship. Otherwise we are causal observers, at best.

Ok let me get this straight. Arlington which has 1 team, the Texas Rangers, has a higher level of enthusiasm for sports? While Philly has all 4 professional sport teams play within the city along with four of the BIG 5. You can't even count the Dallas Cowboys because they have yet to play in Arlington. Just another list to get people riled up.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

You can now follow Les Bowen on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his 27 years at the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo came to the Daily News from the Fort Worth (Tx.) Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually wa s boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose two sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad and very dangerous to be around following a Sooner loss, have been married 29 years and have raised 2 terrific daughters – Allison, 26, a lawyer and graduate of Boston University School of Law; and Amy, 23, who graduated from Clemson and works in marketing and sales for a professional baseball team.
