Back in the day, one imagines that the success of a television commercial was dependent upon whether or not people were whistling the jingle on the street, or repeating the catch-phrase in conversation, or some other such human-based measure. No longer. Now, you know your commercial was a success if it is parodied on YouTube in big numbers. All of which brings us to the NBA's where-amazing-happens ad campaign.

Go on YouTube and there are several zillion copycat commercials on pretty much every conceivable theme, all in the now-familiar style: a series of still pictures, simply captioned in the "where-xxxx-happens" manner, all backed by that hauntingly-insistent piano music.

If your team doesn't have one of these at this point, you don't have fans. Needeless to say, each of the Philadelphia teams have a couple of them. I'm still waiting for the cynical Philadelphia version -- you know, "where throwing up happens" -- but I haven't found that one.

Well, not yet.

No....I don't think this is a sports site. "The Idle Rich" It means Hofmann has time on his hands and can write anything that amuses him and hopefully us. Of course, Philly10, you must be intelligent to understand it. And you 5isaKing...you're just a hater. Thanks Rich. Good Stuff.

Ah, the discerning Eagles fan, who calls any story stupid unless it does three things: overestimates the level of the team's talents, sucks up to favorite team players, and blames management and coaching for everything - never the players. Also, any article that explores the zeitgeist or sociology or foibles of Eagle Nation is also stupid, no matter how tongue-in-cheek or telling it is. Every article must be completely humorless, with no irony, because Eagle fans like literal interpretations - they don't like being confused by a concept as complex as satire. In other words, keep up the good work, Rich, and don't let the midgets getcha down!

My college sports column, where I threw all my junk filler, one liners- half-baked thoughts, brain blips that didn't deserve fleshing out- I called it "Thoughts That Run Through an Idle Mind." I think the above article was more of same. [I hope]

I'm not one of your relatives, Rich, but I'm thinking NM Eagle fan is. He was way too kind! I thought I was gentle...

One, its a blog not and article philly10. Two, how do you complain about something you click the link to that is free. The again suggests you apparently repeatly do this even though not liking it, but have also failed to grasp the concept of it. To not get it would say the stupidity is on your side, and we all know the played out quote of doing the same thing over and expecting different results is....

Hi RichieAllen64 - Nope - not family - just a former ink-stained wretch. I've been called lots of interesting names by readers in my day as well, although on a much, much smaller scale. Sometimes I even deserved it. As a reporter, if you get through the day without deeply offending someone, you're not really doing your job.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
