Week 5 quick hits

1. NFL'S best team: Sure looks like the Giants, who gained 523 yards against the Seahawks, normally a decent defensive team. All without suspended WR Plaxico Burress.

2. NFL's worst team: Well, the Rams and Raiders were idle, leaving the Chiefs to roll over like a dog that wants attention. Losers by 34 points at Carolina, KC gets a break next week. It has its bye.

3. Worst defense: Might be a few candidates, but the Lions yielding 334 passing yards and 425 total yards to the Bears merits special attention. Detroit is this year's Miami, striving hard for a winless season. The Lions might make it.

4. Best defense: Unbeaten Titans have given up 56 points in five games. Shoot, Seahawks gave up 44 and the Bills 41 ...yesterday.

5. The perfect storm: The Colts were headed toward their third loss in four games when an amazing thing happened: They scored 21 in 2 minutes, 10 seconds to beat the Texans. With games vs. the Ravens, Packers, Titans and Patriots ahead, that comeback was essential.

ROOKIE MAGIC 1. Matt Ryan: His Falcons are 3-2; last year they won four games total. And the Philly area native has thrown for four TDs, including one to Roddy White yesterday.

2. Steve Slaton: Maybe the Texans are winless, but the Levittown native is beating a path toward Rookie of the Year consideration. Already he has five scores and 378 yards rushing.

3. Jonathan Stewart: The Oregon product has scored four times and added another 72 yards to his bottom line yesterday.

NEXT WEEK'S 4 STORY LINES 1. Patriots at Chargers: New England, in Frisco yesterday, will stay out on the West Coast. San Diego, 2-3, needs to spend the week on a psychiatrist's couch.

2. Ravens at Colts: Indy won't be scoring 31 in this one.

3. Jaguars at Broncos: Jacksonville could run 45 times in this one; if for no other reason than to keep the ball out of QB Jay Cutler's grip.

4. Bears at Falcons: Seemed like a throaway game when the season started. Not any longer. — Paul Vigna

Bill Smithson isn't smiling anymore.

The urbane sales manager, who seemed to be almost enjoying himself during the early days of his trial, was dabbing sweat from his blanched face yesterday after he was found guilty of first degree murder.
