Vince Young sees himself as a starter

POSTED: Thursday, April 12, 2012, 12:37 PM

Vince Young, the Eagles' backup quarterback last year, sees himself as a starting quarterback and he credits Andy Reid for that confidence.

Young says he asked Reid about returning to the Eagles for next season, but Reid told him he should try to be a starter somewhere. Obviously, that was not going to be the case with the Birds.

"I asked Andy, ‘could I be part of the team again?’ He was like ‘I would love for you to stay here but you’re not a backup quarterback’ so when I heard the big guy, big red, say that it showed me more confidence and more respect that he had for me when he said he wanted to see me somewhere playing," Young told KILT radio in Houston, according to sportsradiointerviews.com. "I can truly understand that and they wanted to give Mike Kafka a little more of a chance to go out and compete and backup up Mike Vick but basically he didn’t see me backing up again. He felt like I should be starting somewhere and playing so that’s just the respect he had for me and saw the hard work that I put in to get better as quarterback last year with those guys.”

Young appeared in six games for the Eagles, starting three. He had four TDs, nine interceptions and was sacked eight times, but did lead the Eagles to a win over the Giants late in the season.

He now is waiting for an opportunity with another team after the draft.

“We have a couple of teams with interest right now and I’m just sitting back and waiting and letting my agent, Tom Condon, do his work," he said. "Pretty much just waiting till after the draft with the new CBA rule, all the different cap rules and things like that, just looking for the best opportunity for myself, my family and for me to go out and compete for a starting job.”

Young's tenure in Philadelphia, though, likely will be summed up in two words, "Dream Team."

“Everybody keeps putting it in the wrong sequence," Young insisted. "I didn’t say ‘Dream Team’ like ‘Dream Team.’ It’s like you are dreaming, like me and you dream about eating a nice burger or something, put it in those terms and just more so the respect that I have for the players from (Dominique Rodgers) Cromartie, from Nnamdi (Asomugha), to Mike Vick and the players that we had around. I was just feeling very respectful towards those guys and that’s what I meant by that situation.”

It's nice for Vince that he sees himself as some sort of relevant. I'm sure he'll find a way to maintain his delusion after no suitors show up for his services. F'ing head case.

Vince Young is a starter, and anyone who thinks otherwise knows absolutely nothing about football.

Young already started his way out of the NFL.

Totally agree Vince. Anyone who actually watched that press conference can see Vince wasn't acting like we were some "Dream Team" that wouldn't be beat. A reporter asked him a question on what it was like coming into a situation where all these top tier, free agents were getting signed (on top on the talent already on the team), and Vince said it was kinda like some kinda dream...a Dream Team...on paper. Was not bragging at all. Good luck Vince.

You are absolutely right. Watched that ten minute interview, with all the questions asked of Young, the only thing reporters could take away from it was the statement Young made about "it's like a dream team". Young never said it was a "dream team" the reporters did. I just like you wish Young the best of luck.

If he gets the ball anywhere near DeSean Jackson on those 8 wide-open fly patterns, Jackson's back in the pro bowl (in a down season).

Give Andy some credit. He said he wasn't a backup. And he isn't - he is a 3rd-stringer.

when Vince Young remembers how to play football again, then he will be a starter. He simply forgot how to play football and lost his game.

Vince Young sees himself as a starting QB? He needs some new eyeglasses or is delusional. Thanks for putting the bullseye on our back last year. Vince, you stink, hit the road.

P-diddy, quit stickin up for ya boi. The birds could have made the playoffs last year if he could have done something, anything, to help his team to some wins, not make bad plays & bonehead decisions. We were better than the stinkin SB champ Giants except our relief QB sucked and couldn't win games. He was a running QB that is now old & slow like McChunky and makes terrible decisions. He is done, he will be lucky to make a team.

Like ya boy Flava Flav would say "You time is up witch"

And take Ronnie Brown with you.

The only way Young is a starter is if he gets a pair of jumper cables and goes to work for AAA.

Just remember, Fat Andy has been wrong many, many times before. As others have said, the Fat Man was just trying to be nice for a change. Young is a starting QB only in his own mind; no one else's. Maybe he needs to review game film from last season when he got the opportunity to play QB. Now if we could just convince the FAT MAN that he is not qualified to be an AFL head coach!!

Andy must be a hypnotist. Everyone he speaks to, they nod their head in agreement and walk away. From Owner, to GM , to player.

Not much love for Vince Young. Yet he wasn't the reason this team was so bad. He was 1-2. Somebody else went 7-6. But for the sake of argument, I to am glad he is gone.

Perfect example of Reid the con man. Anyone with half a brain knows Young is not going to be a starter any time soon. Reid has conned Lurie, players, and the fans for 13 years. He is the king of manipulation.

Agree with P Even, It was Andys nice way of saying we don't want you back. I don't hold him accountable for what he said, I hold the media, b/c they jumped all over that one statement and ran with it. I rather blame our suppose team leaders, such as a Mike Vick, who should have shot the "Dream Team" label down when he was interviewed early on in the season so it would hopefully die down...

When Vince finally spends some time on an analyst's couch, maybe the reality check will eventually arrive. Young has the physical tools, that's for sure; his arm is one of those things that needs work and reps, but that can be done. The question remains: what team will take a chance on this guy, considering his track record of past behavior? That's the first things every head coach is gonna look at; my feeling is Young has got to grow up and fast, hook on somewhere that needs a backup, and be ready. Unfortunately, I don't think Young has fully grown up yet; he has spent his whole life being told how great he is, and he can't handle adversity very well. Hell, he should consider the CFL. They throw more, and a big, athletic QB can make things happens. Perhaps that's where he needs to go.

HAW! Is Vince Young dense or what? Doesn't he know that Rotund Reid was trying to let him down easy? And we know what he meant when he mentioned "Dream Team". He meant that the Eagles were the NFL version of the Miami Heat. He can try to spin it anyway he wants. Don't blame the media, blame HIM! Goodbye VY and good riddance!

Maybe I am missing something. The consensus that I get from reading these posts is that Vince Young was the 2nd coming of Rich Kotite. He started last year as I recall, 3 games-true, he was horrible in Seattle. He did beat the Giants in NY; and he threw for 400+ yards in a losing effort to New England in a game in which DeSean Jackson dropped (at least) 2 touchdowns. We would do well to receive similar production this year from Trent Edwards, or anyone else for that matter. With Vick a near-lock to get hurt sometime next year, we are going to need production from someone.

Poor Vince... he's still DREAMING that a TEAM will actually want him. It's a his latest definition of 'dream team'. As a starter last year with the Eagles he made some of the biggest bone head plays I have ever seen from a quarterback, his throws looked like wounded ducks and his decision making in the pocket was beyond comprehension.

Reid is like one of those jerk boyfrriends, "It's not you, it's me.
The Eagles were 3-6 and about to face the hardest part of the schedule. With Vick playing the way he was, it was a good chance that the Eagles would be 3-9 after those games and even Lurie would have given up on Reid.
His plan was to sit Vick down because of his bruised ribs, which were not a problem for any other quarterback, and then he could blame Young for those losses. It almost backfired on him when Young beat the Giants with a fourth quarter drive that took over 8 minutes, (something Vick could not do) and he threw for over 400 yards againt the Pats. When Vick threwq for over 400 yards and lost against a team that was not great earlier in the season, he was called a great quarterback. When Young therw for over 400 yards and lost, it was called the most useless 400 yards in NFL history, and Young lost to the Patriots, an elite team. Only the philly sports writers had the Eagles as a favorite against the Seahawks. Young sits down and Vick comes in to play the little sister of the NFL, one of those games against a dalls team that sat all their important starters.
Hey Vince, they set you up. Any philly fan who thinks McNabb can still play and Young can't knows nothing about football. But we already knerw that.

NWBeachBum: Vince Young is not "my boy". I don't think he played well either. But he's gone and trying to find another job. All the posts bashing him are tiresome. Give it a rest. By the way, Young was the QB when the Eagles beat the Giants last year.
