Vince Young sees himself as a starter

POSTED: Thursday, April 12, 2012, 12:37 PM

Vince Young, the Eagles' backup quarterback last year, sees himself as a starting quarterback and he credits Andy Reid for that confidence.

Young says he asked Reid about returning to the Eagles for next season, but Reid told him he should try to be a starter somewhere. Obviously, that was not going to be the case with the Birds.

"I asked Andy, ‘could I be part of the team again?’ He was like ‘I would love for you to stay here but you’re not a backup quarterback’ so when I heard the big guy, big red, say that it showed me more confidence and more respect that he had for me when he said he wanted to see me somewhere playing," Young told KILT radio in Houston, according to sportsradiointerviews.com. "I can truly understand that and they wanted to give Mike Kafka a little more of a chance to go out and compete and backup up Mike Vick but basically he didn’t see me backing up again. He felt like I should be starting somewhere and playing so that’s just the respect he had for me and saw the hard work that I put in to get better as quarterback last year with those guys.”

Young appeared in six games for the Eagles, starting three. He had four TDs, nine interceptions and was sacked eight times, but did lead the Eagles to a win over the Giants late in the season.

He now is waiting for an opportunity with another team after the draft.

“We have a couple of teams with interest right now and I’m just sitting back and waiting and letting my agent, Tom Condon, do his work," he said. "Pretty much just waiting till after the draft with the new CBA rule, all the different cap rules and things like that, just looking for the best opportunity for myself, my family and for me to go out and compete for a starting job.”

Young's tenure in Philadelphia, though, likely will be summed up in two words, "Dream Team."

“Everybody keeps putting it in the wrong sequence," Young insisted. "I didn’t say ‘Dream Team’ like ‘Dream Team.’ It’s like you are dreaming, like me and you dream about eating a nice burger or something, put it in those terms and just more so the respect that I have for the players from (Dominique Rodgers) Cromartie, from Nnamdi (Asomugha), to Mike Vick and the players that we had around. I was just feeling very respectful towards those guys and that’s what I meant by that situation.”

It's nice for Vince that he sees himself as some sort of relevant. I'm sure he'll find a way to maintain his delusion after no suitors show up for his services. F'ing head case.

Vince Young is a starter, and anyone who thinks otherwise knows absolutely nothing about football.

Young already started his way out of the NFL.

Totally agree Vince. Anyone who actually watched that press conference can see Vince wasn't acting like we were some "Dream Team" that wouldn't be beat. A reporter asked him a question on what it was like coming into a situation where all these top tier, free agents were getting signed (on top on the talent already on the team), and Vince said it was kinda like some kinda dream...a Dream Team...on paper. Was not bragging at all. Good luck Vince.

You are absolutely right. Watched that ten minute interview, with all the questions asked of Young, the only thing reporters could take away from it was the statement Young made about "it's like a dream team". Young never said it was a "dream team" the reporters did. I just like you wish Young the best of luck.

If he gets the ball anywhere near DeSean Jackson on those 8 wide-open fly patterns, Jackson's back in the pro bowl (in a down season).

That was Andy saying we don't want you in a nice way.

He could dominate if he wants. The Arena Football League is always looking for new talent.

He's a starter...for any team looking to grab the #1 overall pick in next year's draft.

Give Andy some credit. He said he wasn't a backup. And he isn't - he is a 3rd-stringer.

when Vince Young remembers how to play football again, then he will be a starter. He simply forgot how to play football and lost his game.

Way to be gentle Andy . . . coach version of "It's not you. It's me."
