Vick on his sliding: "It won't happen"

POSTED: Thursday, November 11, 2010, 3:47 PM

When Michael Vick took off for one of his dazzling runs against the Colts on Sunday, you could almost hear the entire stadium, the Eagles sideline and the team's ownership box all scream in unison, "Slide!"

But he just won't do it.

"I don’t know how to do it." the Eagles quarterback said. "I don’t know how to slide, so I won’t get into that right now. I either get down, I go head first or dive or just fall. For some reason I always think I’m going to get hurt or something crazy’s going to happen.”

Some have suggested Vick take lessons with a baseball coach who could teach him the finer art of sliding feet first. Actually, when he was in Atlanta, Vick said, the Falcons sent him to the Braves for instruction.

“It won’t happen," Vick said. "I did it before down in Atlanta. It didn’t work.”

Andy Reid joked after the win over the Colts about the one time Vick stepped out of bounds before getting hit, but the Eagles coach seems to have come to terms with Vick's not sliding.

“Listen, I let Michael play," Reid said. "I mean, he knows. Listen, he’s the one that had the cracked cartilage, there. And so that’s not a real fun experience. So he knows when he needs to get out [of bounds]. And I was joking when I made that statement. But listen, he got out of bounds a couple times, which is good.”

Vick spoke briefly with reporters before heading to a meeting as he and the Eagles prepare for Monday night's rematch against the Redskins.

The Eagles are expected to be without starting free safety Nate Allen (neck) and starting right guard Max Jean-Gilles (concussion). Neither will practice Thursday, Reid said. Jean-Gilles has not passed his post-concussion tests and has not been examined by an independent neurologist, Reid added.

Rookie Kurt Coleman will fill in for Allen and Nick Cole will take Jean-Gilles' place.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs (hip) and tackle King Dunlap (knee) were going to be eased back into practice. Reid said that it would be a "stretch" for Hobbs to make it back by Monday. Dimitri Patterson filled in for Hobbs against the Colts and played well.

@Zeru77, always the race card. The point I made wasn't about white and black but how Vick has paid, and paid dearly. Get off the race card.

I just think it's kind of funny all the people harping on Vick's past misdeeds. As a longtime friend of dog's what he did sickens me. His actions since have been correct & necessary. What is funny and a bit ironic is the people so consumed with hate that it seems their own internal combustion causes them more harm than anything he ever did. We all should just let them wallow in their hatred until it consumes ever ounce of their being. No insults or defense of his redemption will ever matter to them so I agree that the best course of action is to not respond directly to them. Go Eagles!!!!

Great. Another QB who won't listen to coaching to improve the team's chances of winning a super bowl. First we get a guy who works on nothing but firing rockets all over the field (mostly into the ground) instead of his accuracy, and now we got a guy who refuses to learn how to not get killed when he uses his best asset (running). You don't know how to slide? It's falling gracefully. How hard can it be? They teach little leaguers how to slide and they can figure it out, but a guy who is going to be demanding that our franchise give him $15 million a year for the next 5 years can't do it? Come on Eagles, don't make the same mistake. The guy doesn't realize that his job is to stay on the field and win games, not create his own highlight real. We went through this with 5, now it's happening with 7. Please Vick. Learn how to slide or run out of bounds. Your amazing runs can’t happen with cracked cartilage, so do us a favor and figure out how to go down without getting crushed by a linebacker.

The only people that should be getting on Vick's back are vegans...everyone has directly, or indirectly hurt animals, we just conveniently excuse it as a means to "feed ourselves"

Let's admit it, folks. Vick isn't bright enough to slide.

I have to admit I was one of the ones that thought the Eagles were crazy when they signed this guy. I called him dog killer and everything else. But over the last two years with the exception of one hiccup, I have to admit he has won me over. That doesn't mean I approve of what he's done, but which one of us is not in need of forgiveness. He's worked hard, he's learned from his mistakes, he spends time studying, he's one of the first ones there and the last to leave and if I had to choose between him and Donovan, the model citizen, to go into a game that we had to win, I would take Vick over McNabb any day. I just hope the offense line can hold up so this guy doesn't get crushed. If it does, I'm not saying they can win the Super Bowl, but who knows, if they get the breaks any given team can beat any other team on any given day. Bring on the Deadskins.
