Vick Doesn't Need Tebow Waiting in Wings

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 11:28 AM

Should the Eagles swing a trade for Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow?
Yes, he'd be a great backup for Vick.
No, he's all hype.

Yesterday, when news broke that the Broncos were getting Peyton Manning, I texted Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. "When's Tebow coming?" I asked. Ha-ha. Hee-hee. Yuk, yuk.

Didn't get a response. Didn't expect one. Howie is, after all, a Florida alum. But really -- Tim Tebow, a 46.5-percent passer last season in his "breakthrough" year, running Andy Reid's West Coast offense? Lotsa touch passing and reading? How would that work? How did it work with Vince Young last season?

Yet, some folks on the internets today are citing the Young debacle as a precedent why the Eagles might pursue Tebow. This often happens in such cases, and the logic always eludes me. Let's say I buy a used car, and it turns out to be a bad investment, breaking down a lot and costing me a lot of money. Then, later, after I get rid of it, somebody is selling a similar car. Am I a likely potential buyer? Or the least likely buyer?

But all of that aside, this is Michael Vick's team and locker room. If the Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl next season, it is going to be behind Vick. If you paid any attention to Tebowmania last season, you know that Tebow has a huge gravitational pull. I already have a tweet from somebody today contrasting the "dog killer" with the "clean-cut, God-fearing" Tebow. We really, really, really, really don't need this, after every loss. Really.

I am not a Tebow "hater." I was thrilled to watch him beat the Steelers in the playoffs. Generally, I like it when somebody runs roughshod over conventional wisdom. But my view, Tebow needs to go to a place with a run-oriented offense, where he will start. Yes, the Eagles need a good plan if Vick should miss three games again with injury, but bringing the circus to town to camp out next to Vick's locker isn't that plan.

The Eagles WILL NOT win a Super Bowl with Michael Vick at QB! If Andy & Marty are such QB gurus, why not bring Tebow in and groom him for the position that will be vacant in no more than 2 years? The kid's a winner! Vick's a highlight reel that stops around game 10-11 because he can't stop himself from taking punishment in the previous games. The Vick Era, such as it is, is fast coming to a close.

Acquiring Tebow perfectly fits Neck Fatt's M.O.

Here's another grand opportunity for him to prove that he's smarter than the average bear, and that he doesn't just "look" like the average bear.

Oh you mean like ALL the other QB's the Eagles have won Super Bowls with? Silly me, I thought the Eagles have never won a Super Bowl with ANY QB. And a desperate reach for a guy who completes 46% of his passes and can't read defenses in an offense predicated on accuracy and reads is borderline stupid!

And that is diferent from Vick how? Vick can't read defenses probably because he can't see them. Vick's accuracy is spotty at best. What the Eagles need is a heart transplant, one that doesn't crumble in the 4th quarter. Maybe a little Tebow work ethic will rub off on Vick and he can prepare for games rather than his usual "react don't read" style.

les,mcVick and Tebow should get along good you know two chritians and everything,i think jeff lurie will ask Big Red to look into Tim Tebow to upgrade the eagles image and boost the fans support that has dropped behind the phillies, flyers even sixers, also Tim Tebow has a hugh upside 1-he will improve his skills 2-he is a natural born leader 3-he will never have any problems with the law 4-he's a winner 5-he's a team leader 6-he's not injury prone..he's worth a for trade assante samaul plus whatever else to make the deal..when was the last time mcVick beat the steelers in the playoffs??..MV=0SBs....wolf.

They are both running QBs and running QBs dont win, have never won in this league. Tebow has a chance to become more of a passer, Vick at this stage of his career its too late.

Les, what about the Eagles using the 15th pick to draft Ryan Tannehill as the QB of the future? Tannehill has the talent and intelligence to be a franchise QB. But he only started at QB for two seasons in college. He started out as a wide receiver. He's rough around the edges as a QB. But he could be an understudy to Vick for a couple seasons before succeeding an aging Vick as the next franchise QB.

Les,mcVick had a DreamTeam and was eliminated from the playoffs with 4 games left,Tebow had a weak team and made the playoffs and won a playoff game..i think with a coach that wants to coach him he could do well,he's a winner and a team leader...wolf.

REPLACE A RUNNING QB WITH A RUNNING QB! = SUCCESS! - just for competition i would be for it! might make MV actually worry that the QB behind him could and will replace him. plus he's a "good boy"

Ok, question for all the idiots who WANT Tebow... If he was that good, why would Denver get rid of him?!?!?! He's a 2nd year player, he could be groomed by Peyton Manning(who's not gonna play 5 more years) and is a "natural born leader." Maybe Elway doesn't know what a good QB is... OR... maybe Tebow isn't worth it.

If the report I heard is correct that Manning's salary in 2013 will be *40M - yes 40M*, then this is really only a one year deal. AFAIK Tebow isn't breaking the bank, and no one is going to give up a high draft choice for a QB with a sub 50% completion rate. Who says he will be traded, besides sports writers trying to justify their paycheck?
    Only in Philly...

It's not Tebow versus Vick. It's Tebow versus Kafka, and he wins that one 100% of the time.

For God's sake, get SOMEOBDY in here who can backup Vick in the 3 or 4 games he is going to miss this year.

trust me, you don't want Tebow as the backup. I have seen this first hand. To quote Crash Davis, "you couldn't water if you fell out of a boat."

But what is best for the Eagles? You shouldn't really base your decisions on the preferences and needs of an aging QB. McNabb was 31 when they brought his heir apparent on board and he only had a few years of serviceability left. Vick will be 32 this season. What has he shown to indicate that he can beat father time? Is he getting faster and stronger?

The Eagles don't need Tebow. Talk about a madhouse!! Can you hear the fans screaming for Tebow the minute Vick misfires or throws a pick.
What the Eagles need to do is use one of the #2 picks or at the very least their #3 to draft and develope a QB in the draft. Hey, Wilson from Wisconsin is the same size as Vick but he makes all the throws and has QB smarts.

macd41144, did you ever consider that Manning doesn't want to have an heir apparent waiting in the wings? It seems to me like that might have been part of his decision process and the Broncos indicated they'd trade Tebow. It's going to be tough to win with that motley bunch in Denver as it is, without the fans calling for Tebow when they lose games.

What a silly comment. This guy must have never heard the names John Elway, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Roger Staubach, Bobby Douglas and yes even Dan Marino. I think there are a few super bowl wins in that group.

@banned...not to worry, the accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid has been out scouring the cockfights, rodeos and circuses looking for a suitable backup to Vick. The Tonner has utmost confidence in "Mailroom" and the boys.

As much as I like Tebow, he's worse at QB than The Mike Vick Experience. Not to say that as a slight to Mike Vick (we have more than enough dumb arse haters on here to do that) but we need a suitable backup who doesn't go all "LET'S WIN NOW BOYS" type of mentality and is pretty accurate at QB. Like I said, I like Tim Tebow but yes, this is The Mikc Vick Experience not the Tim Tebow Talent in Philadelphia! The ONLY way the Eagles win a Super Bowl is by #7 (or at least with #7 healing on the sidelines)! GO MIKE VICK GO! GO EAGLES!!!

That poll question says it all...the fairweather fans are grasping at straws for anything. Wiff wants Vick out of town at any cost; every "fan" with a fantasy team and a 12-year-old's understanding of the world around them suddenly again think Tebow will bring a Super Bowl here. They say it for every single free agent and every single college kid that any of these "media" people dare to bring up. No to Tebow! I want free agents who can play football, not pander to the lowest common denominator for their own personal ego and bank account padding.

If Reid keeps insisting on bringing out that wildcat formation than yes Tebow would be the perfect option for that situation only. Won;t fumble and can get those 3 yards inside the five.

If the Eagles had the Broncos defense, they would have won 11-12 games last year. If the Broncos had the Eagles defense, Tim Tebow would have made a career out of driving his team down the field on the last play of the game, scoring a touchdown, and still losing by at least two scores.

Well, McNabb didn't work for 11 years. Vick and Kolb didn't work in 2010 and Vick and Young didn't work in 2011. These were the quarterbacks you backed for the Eagles over the last 13 years Les. What sane man woiuld listen to you? Let's see, Tebow went to the playoffs and beat the number one defensive team in the NFL. Vick did not make the playoff, had a league leading 36 turnovers, 18 interceptions and was routed by the Steelers in preseason, looking like a bad sandlot team. Vick got sshuit out like McNabb was shut out in Dallas in 2009 when the Eagles were the number two tean behind the New Orleans Saints.
Hey Les, Joe Banner is one the phone asking you who they should sign in free agency. hahahahahaha

Time to get over the Vince Young thing. The guy was signed on a 1 year deal to be a BACK-UP QB. Calling it a "debacle" is going too far. Not like they made a major commitment to the guy or anything. They took a 1 season flyer on him to be a back-up, nothing more.

Tim Tebow plays with something very few of today's players do. He has heart and he never leaves the field without giving 110%. Notice how quiet Denver players are right now? Do you really think they are going to get the same effort out of a guy that has not thrown a pass for what , 2 years now? Tim Tebow, regardless of if he is starting or not, will make your team stronger. I would welcome him to this team with open arms, it has been a long time since the Eagles have picked up someone worth cheering for....

We don't need the drama if he is such a great back-up QB then why didn't Denver keep him? His teammates did not seem all that disappointed that he is gone. I have nothing against Tebow the person, but he is not a back-up QB, he is not a QB and this media here would just cause too many issues with a team that is set up to win and know each other. NO TEBOW IN PHILLY!!!!!!!

The money the Eagles just spent on DeSean Jackson will be wasted if they bring in a QB like Tebow, who makes Donovan McNabb look like the most accurate passer in the world by comparison. There is NO WAY Tebow in Philly is going to happen. No way at all.
