The Two Eagles Lives of Jason Babin

POSTED: Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 3:04 AM

After the Eagles manhandled the Jets in Game 14 last season, defense end Jason Babin had it all going on. He was coming off three games in which he had registered eight sacks, giving him 18 on the season in 14 games.

In the 13 games since then (two in 2011, 11 this season), his sacks, tackles and quarterback hurries were all way, way done.

Here are Babin's numbers through that Jets game and since:

releasing babin is the biggest sign yet that wholesale changes are coming to the eagles because it means that washburn and the wide-9 are gone.. and if washburn is gone, mudd will leave. and i dont think it was reid's decision to release babin - it came from either roseman or lurie...

Upon hearing the news he was getting the axe, Babin responded, "Cool bro. That shnizzle drives the chicks crazy!

Graham, Curry and Hunt are in their early 20s and Babin's 32 - he'll catch on with a team and Reids will see who he's got for next year.

Actually, there are three "Babin lives" with the Eagles. He was unsuccessful in his first try, and ended up with Washburn in Tennessee. Showed good there in the wide nine, so Andy brought them both to Philly. Now he's back to being the failure he was in his first stint with the Eagles.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
