The $24,000 Snap

POSTED: Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 1:49 AM

Who should be the next Eagle to get a pink slip?
Howard Mudd
Andy Reid
Nnamdi Asomugha
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

If you're having trouble spending all of your Christmas bonus and find yourself with an extra $24,000 or so laying around, here's an idea: Pay Michael Vick to come over to your house ... bend over in front of him ... hike him a football ... and then write him a check. You do that, and all you've really done is imitate Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

Assuming he is indeed finished playing for the Eagles, CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank tells us that Vick will end up being paid $35,500,000 of the $100 million contract he signed in August 2011. Considering that he took 1,474 snaps since then, that comes to $24,084 a snap. That may be tipping money to people named Vick, Cataldi and Barkann, but it sounds more like college tuition to us.

It is also three times as much as Vick made per snap in his first two seasons with the Eagles ($7,930 for each of 867 plays, including playoffs).

Below are how Vick's numbers for his first two years in South Philly compare with his last two. We particularly like his total TDs to turnover difference (plus-24 in 2009-10; minus-1 in 2011-12) and his passing TD percentage (which dropped off by two whole percentage points since signing the megacontract).

And below that are what Vick was seemingly paid over both those periods for some of the things he did on the football field. (How does $3.5 million per win over the last two seasons grab you? Or the nearly $500,000 earned for the 77-yard passing TD to DeSean Jackson, at $6,492 a yard, earlier this season?)

You read on while we go break open my daughters' piggy banks ... Those property taxes aren't going to pay themselves.

Not every fan thinks like you flyers1000 and you too atb. I was very happy when Vick signed to the Eagles. The guy did his time. Stop being so narrow minded. You hating him is not going to change anything and the guy is going to make millions regardless. The guy doesn't have 1.6 million twitter followers for nothing. Let the guy breathe. You think he cares what you think you think?

Joe Montana was also a third round draft pick, same as Nick Foles...NOBODY ever thought that Montana would become the greatest QB in history....not saying Foles is the next Montana, but it shows you never know about QB's until they play a couple of seasons...Jaws studies QB's and said Foles will be a very good NFL QB....I beleive Jaws.

Mike Vick`s on field performance put him in this situaion. The media built Vick up to be the hottest thing since sunburn.Did the fans read a bad thing about him when he got here?I heard only one sports media guy say that the Eagles should not have signed Vick.Ray Dininger. And he went out on a limb to say it.Remberber what happen to Bill Berdy when he said That the Eagles should not have gave McNab all that Money?Turn out to be true from both guys.Vick did this to himself.

He was not just a personal bust but was a bad influence on the team. How could a player put out max effort with this scum back there? Lurie should have known that. Now he will pay big to get rid of this failed experiment.

Anybody reading this article that says Mike Vick is a bad player/person because of whatever reason (dogfighting, old, etc.) is a fairweather fan. I could bet those same people were perfecly fine with Vick's performance that led him to the Pro Bowl in 2011. He just needs some better support during this stage of his career. We all know he still has an arm, and he can scramble, but not when you are getting hit 20 times per game. Just look at Aaron Rodgers hits/scramble stats this year.

"I was against this guy from the beginning. Mostly becuase of the reprehensible acts he performed on innocent animals"...so, sackvicknow, im assuming youre a vegan or hunt your own food? That tired argument of his cruelty to dogs...dont let it ever come out that dogs are delicious or you'll see puppy slaughterhouses open up all over this country overnight...and dont act as if we'd starve without the mass produced meat...please, we need our triple layer baconator, 20 piece mcnuggets...and just to be clear, im getting a hoagie for lunch, walking in my leather sneakers, so im not saying dont eat meat or wear animal products, but these animals are born for the sole purpose of dying..thats it...at least mike gave his dogs a fighting chance...its nothing more than selective outragee.

I agree with you, and how do his personal decisions reflect how he plays on the field? People need to be more open mided to that big difference.

Everyone needs to learn to forgive and accept. No one will forget, but they should just accept that everyone makes mistakes. No matter how big the mistake he made. He has already asked for forgiveness, from his fans, to the general public, to God. So just give him a break because even Tony Dungy believes he has changed. And you can't say Dungy's a liar.

Even Tony Dungy can make a mistake.

Well yes Dungy can make mistakes, but not in judging a man's character

DJackFan I give Dungy credit for judging character. What is the real story about Vicks crash and rise?Vick could of been the fall guy along a row of pins.He did not go to jail killing dogs.It was for running a gambling ring. There is only one way to do that and it is to know someone in unseen places.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
