Former Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens called into the 94WIP Morning Show on Tuesday and discussed a number of topics, most notably the feud with Donovan McNabb that helped lead to his departure from Philadelphia.
Owens said he believes McNabb was hurt by the way the city immediately accepted the receiver upon his arrival.
“I think he felt kind of slighted at how, honestly, at probably the way the team, well actually the city, just embraced me while I was there considering when he got drafted they [Eagles fans] didn’t want him there and things like that,” Owens said. “And then when I came there and I played so well—I wasn’t trying to take away from Donovan’s limelight or anything.”
The six-time Pro Bowler went on to say that he thinks McNabb got “annoyed” when fans would chant "T.O." after he scored a touchdown. Owens also believes McNabb was offended when reporters asked how Owens’ injury would affect the team heading into Super Bowl XXXIX against the Patriots.
“Main questions they asked him was ‘Are you guys gonna win? Can you guys win without T.O?’” Owens told WIP's Angelo Cataldi. “I think [McNabb] kind of got upset and annoyed at the fact that he felt his skills were kind of being undermined as one of the reasons why they got to the Super Bowl.”
In his first season with the Eagles, Owens reeled in 1,200 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in 14 games. An injury caused him to remain sidelined until the Super Bowl against the Patriots, where he caught nine passes for 122 yards.
Things went downhill from there as Owens sought a contract extension, which caused tension between the receiver and the team’s front office, and a feud began between him and McNabb. Ultimately, the Eagles released Owens.
Still, the 40-year-old said the Eagles were the best team he’s ever played on and that his time in Philadelphia was the best of his career.
“There was a number of reasons that factor in me saying that and one of those reasons is coach [Andy] Reid. That guy is such a great coach. He’s a players coach,” Owens said. “I mean the teammates that I had, and I’m not just saying that just to be saying it because I’m on air, I really loved my time there in Philly.”
Owens also took the time to thank Eagles fans during his time on the show.
"I have so much respect and so much love for Philly that it goes unnoticed," he said. "I think a lot of fans don’t know that, and the fans that are listening to me now, like dude, I love you guys so much."
