Stunner: McNabb does not even know the NFL rules

POSTED: Sunday, November 16, 2008, 8:18 PM

I thought I was done thinking -- let along blogging -- about today's Eagles' debacle but this is so stunning I have to put it out there. Donovan McNabb apparently played the entire overtime period in the 13-13 tie -- the first tie in pro football in six years -- with the Bengals without knowing one of the basic NFL rules, that regular season games end in a deadlock if no one scores in the 15-minute stanza:

No one was more surprised than McNabb that it ended so soon—3 hours, 46 minutes after the opening kickoff. The 10th-year quarterback thought it would keep going until someone scored, just like a playoff game.

Wrong.

“I didn’t know that,” said McNabb, who played a leading role in keeping it tied. “I’ve never been part of a tie. I never even knew it was in the rule book. I was looking forward to getting the opportunity to get out there and try to drive to win the game. But unfortunately with the rules, we settled with a tie.”

Wow. The thing is, knowing that time is expiring, or not knowing, would seem to make a huge difference in your pyschology the last couple of times that the Birds had the ball. In fact, when the Eagles had a 4th-and-1 on their own 22 late in the overtime and elected to punt, Merrill Reese and Mike Quick were making the case (and I agreed) that the Eagles should have gone for it -- because a tie would be so damaging to their shrinking playoff chances. But one of the key people out there didn't even understand the scenario, or the sense of urgency? Again, wow. Did Andy Reid know the rules?

Wait until McNabb hears about the 2-point conversion!

"remember not everything is about you-...---}}} Oh, I get it now. Your homoerotic fantasies about men having sex wasn't about me. Does does make me fell better - but it still doesn't address the question of your latent homosexuality. Maybe some of my yoga buds can help you out with that?

Hey idiot/genius. If you'd like to tag along, you'd be welcome also. Given your obsessive posting of fantasies of homoerotic acts between two men - there may even be a couple of men in the class that would like to meet you.

OT is not exactly a new rule -the NFL started it in 1974 so it has been the rule in the NFL for McNabb's entire life. It is inexcusable to not know the rules.

tp, my guess about that sitch (4th down and kicking the field goal - I didn't see most of the game so I'm going by your description), I don't think it's been clear who was calling the plays a lot of the time (whether it was Reid or the offensive coordinator), so I wonder if somebody got overruled.

Ricky - I have no interest in fighting with you. Obviously, it just infuriates you that I make an a** out of you every time you post. I can understand that, and I sympathize. In fact, I care enough that I will offer to bring you as a guest to my yoga class. I think a few pigeon poses will mellow you out significantly.

I need someone to explain to me how McNabb not knowing the rules affected the game in any way. I don't see how it did. On the other hand, Reid not knowing how having a tie on the record affects the standings DID affect the game. Maybe if he had realized that, he wouldn't have made the bonehead call of punting when they had a fourth and short down, or going for the field goal earlier when they had a fourth and one from something like the 10 yard line. The most amazing thing about that last one is that, again, he left the offense in like he was going to go for it, then called a timeout, and then decided to kick the field goal. Obviously, he wasn't thinking ahead about what would he'd do if they had a short yardage situation deep in Cinci's territory. What the heck is someone calling plays supposed to be doing if they're not anticipating such situations. Reid's gotta go.

Earlier I said that I didn't think McNabb was serious about his understanding of the OT rules. I was just thinking that even the most casual NFL watcher sees some sort of rules graphic everytime an OT period starts, and then I realize that NFL players probably don't watch that many games on tv.

All he had to say is "Guys, its a one period sudden death set up". Thats it. The fact that players were askign trainers speaks volumes to me.

RG, in Reid's defense, he hardly has time to go over the OT rules with his players in the middle of the game. I agree completely that the players should know the rules, but he couldn't have explained it in the middle of the game.

Buckhalter said he and Greg Lewis didn't know the OT rules either. they asked a trainer halfway through OT. Its pretty bad that Reid didn't go voer this with them as the OT started or progressed. At minimum, he needs to be removed as defacto GM so there can be accountability.

Having said all of the above they still should have punted on 4th and 1 at their own 22. They haven't exactly been stellar at 4th downs lately, and giving the game away is worse than taking a chance on a takeaway or a stop. The only reason the Bengals had a FG attempt was the roughing the passer penalty which gave them the field position and three extra plays.

The game was a disgrace. The Eagles are treating their fans the way the Phillies did in 2005 and 06. I don't buy that McNabb really didn't know the OT rules (the only one I didn't know was that there's a 2 minute warning, becuse OT's rarely go that deep) I think that they're just blowing whatever smoke they can. I think McNabb comment about having another shot at winning the game was chanelling Sarah Palin when she feigned shock about giving up Michigan. (Why don't they let me go up there and do some campaigning...). They had five quarters worth of shots, they'd probably still be out there.

Yet more "grace" and "dignity" from those who didn't like Obama getting elected. Watch as the Republican toadies trot out the brilliant logic that those who are threatening the President-elect are actually Democrats. -- snip -- WASHINGTON – Threats against a new president historically spike right after an election, but from Maine to Idaho law enforcement officials are seeing more against Barack Obama than ever before. The Secret Service would not comment or provide the number of cases they are investigating. But since the Nov. 4 election, law enforcement officials have seen more potentially threatening writings, Internet postings and other activity directed at Obama than has been seen with any past president-elect, said officials aware of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue of a president’s security is so sensitive.

I've been arguing with my friends for a couple of years now over McNabb, and I've been one of the last ones to support him....but seeing him play today was tough to stomach. And then hearing him say that he doesn't know the rules....Ugh.

I never knew that #5 was this dumb, but boy is he dumb. This is a rule that every kid growing up watching the NFL knows. He doesn't know it and it seems, either does the FF AR. C U Later.

Never been a huge fan of Donnie-Mac, but the fact is that he has been one of the top 5 QBs throughout his career. He's only had one decent receiver, one, the entire time he's been an Eagle, and that year 5 was spectacular. He's never had a coach willing to help set up the pass with the run. He's NOT a West Coast type talent. The blame is Andy Reid's, all the way. Talk about stupid - the guy's been a coach for 10 years and doesn't have a clue about one of the most basic elements of the game: clock management. How about when he need to call a timeout before kicking a field goal because he hadn't given any forethought to what he'd do if they came up with a fourth and short yardage. Reid must go!!

To paraphrase Jeffrey Laurie - if you don't like the way Andy Reid screws up just about every game these days, go ahead and root for a team that has a different coach.

It's one thing to not know the rule. But to be clueless enough to keep talking about it. As soon as I heard this quote all of the 10 yrs of questions just melted away. That's why he throws 3 yd dumpoffs in the middle of the field with seconds left in the half/game and no timeouts. That's why he can't run a hurry up offense. That's why he can't look off a receiver or pump fake to draw a safety (every pick today and the 3-4 they dropped was him just watching the receiver run their route- the safeties were jumping routes all day). He's a dope. I've defended him for years but honestly it's just time to admit after 2 .500 seasons that this is a rebuilding team. But the arrogant coach can't bring himself to admit that he's failed. Turn the page aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.....Pitchers and catchers in less than 100 days. World #%*$ Champions baby!!!!

A QB Not knowing the rules is a disgrace. This is his JOB ! Question : does the Head Coach know the rules ? My first "WHAT", came when I heard a TV announcer last week say, in a conversation with a quarterback, that the qb said he didn't get his footwork going until later in a game. That smacks of somebody not disciplined and not warming up correctly...That's a Junior High thing ! Not knowing the rules !!! That's all on the QB ! It is similar to a driver education student explaining that the reason they ran the car through a fence an on to a baseball field, was that they didn't know they they had to press the brake DOWN to stop the car ! Granted the driver ed instructor should know that you can't assume "knowledge" ! But a PROFESSIONAL QB NOT knowing the rules ? An adult ? A ten year veteran ? The word is "disgrace". Where's VanBrocklin ?

WQonder what Eskin's excuse will be tomorrow. A cllaer asked him Friday what the Eagles had to do to win against the Bengals. He answered, "Show up." I guess they didn't. Will he still be claiming Reid is the best coach going?

this was a bad junior high game. i was pulling for the bengals kicker to drill that final kick so we don't have to hear about the mathematical possibilities. reid should grow some cujones and go for it on the 4th and short. the season was on the line but there was no sense of urgency. its all over...thank god for the phillies buzz which will last awhile longer.

I have always been critical of McNabb, for throwing up, being out of breath, laughing after a bad play, wasting time, wasting timeouts because they do not get the play called or to the line quickly, throwing over heads and at feet, trying to be studious in interviews instead of honestly assessing himself, comparing himself to President-elect Obama; but when I heard this on TV earlier I swore to my brother that we didn't hear it correctly. All Philly fans want is to love a winner (i.e. 2008 Phils) and, rigthfully so, we crucify stupidity!

They looked pathetic. Any given Sunday the Eagles can be beat and there isn't a team in the league that fears us. I'm tired of seeing the smug mugs of Reid and McNabb.

I am not surprised that Donny doesn't know the rules . He's a strange dude . Not the sharpest tool in the shed. How about last week when he was out of breath after watching the giants offense for most of the game . His best days are certainly behind him. To quote Buddy Ryan "trade him for a six pack , and it doesn't even have to be cold"

Will, at this point, who really cares? What's done is done, and I've officially gone into Phillies mode. I'll always root for my Eagles, but at this point, I'll be focusing my attentions on Sundays elsewhere until someone in the top brass realize that the supposed "Gold Standard" was simply fool's gold. I believe the Eagles won't become relevant again until 2011 at the earliest, if the scouts did their job and drafted a QB better than Trent Edwards.

I wasn't listening to Merrill and Mike, but I was saying the same thing. If they make that first down, they have a shot at winning. If they go for it but don't make it, chances are they lose. But by punting the ball at that point, Reid is telling the team that they are playing for a tie. Yeah sure, maybe something weird happens like the punt returner fumbling. but punting with one minute left most likely means you either tie or lose! WTF!!
