Stunner: DeSean Jackson gets $51 million deal

Are you happy the Eagles locked up wide receiver DeSean Jackson for at last five years?
Yes. He's going to be one of the best recievers in the NFL next season.
No. He's not as good as he thinks he is.
Doesn't matter. The Eagles have enough stars that having him is no big deal.

The Eagles signed DeSean Jackson to a five-year, $51 million contract, the team announced today in a stunning move that locks up the talented but mercurial wide receiver and answers one of the team's biggest offseason questions.

"We are thrilled to be able to keep one of the NFL's top playmakers in Philadelphia," Andy Reid said in a news release. "DeSean is a game breaker, he has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense."

There's no doubt about that. The question was whether the Eagles would pay Jackson long-term after a down season that included a training camp hold out, a missed meeting and Jackson's being benched for poor play against the Patriots. The Eagles answered on Wednesday, taking another step to lock up home grown talent after previously extending the contracts of Todd Herremans and Trent Cole.

"Signing our own players was a big priority for us this offseason and DeSean was certainly high on our list," Reid said. "We are very excited about his future as an Eagle."

Jackson's deal is in between those recently signed by Vincent Jackson -- five years, $55.6 million -- and Pierre Garcon, five years, $42.5 million. The Eagles are giving Jackson roughly $15 million guaranteed, according to ProFootballTalk, less than the $20.5 million Washington promised to Garcon.

Jackson is scheduled to meet with reporters at noon Thursday.

Another TooManyDala signing. This is the reward out there for bad citizens and teammates who pout, sulk, miss meetings, get benched and generally don't put it all out there. And guess what? Chances are he'll do it some more, it ain't gonna magically disappear. If he does well, by mid-season he'll be whining he's underpaid. And end up broke no matter what. Good luck with that, glad my money isn't going to them.

WOW....what a mistake, 10 million a year?....his stats for the last two years are not as good as Garcon's. The Redskins got a steal or the Eagles got robbed..

guaranteed amount is about $18 mil which is twice what he would have been guaranteed had he signed tender so both team and player had some incentive to do this (contrast to Cluelss Rube of Phils who throws money down the drain on a first baseman almost 2 years before his contract was to expire only to lose $125 mil. on a player who may never be an elite player ever again, and now to have no cleanup hitter, and throws away $50 million away on a closer about twice the market in salary and in years)

DeSean and rosenhaus did not have the Eagles over a barrel. If DeSean didn't sign he could have sat out the year...that was his only choice and he wasn't going to do that. They reached a fair deal for a top notch receiver. What the Lions did today was crazy...8 years and 132 million. That was crazy. The birds paid market value...the birds will fly this year. The jealous know nothings on here are amazing. Go Eagles.

just as important to sign your own players than FAs. That being said, I have my doubts. Guy is explosive and opens up field for others, just think team would be fine without him. Id prefer a bigger receiver who can catch in traffic and red zone. DJac is kind of a gimmick player, was it worth it long term, hes also prone to injury with his size along with our QB. I just wish they did this a yr or 2 ago, need to lock down McCoy now.

Now, he has to learn not to duck before he catches the ball. Good move though and we can finally dismiss all the newsroom geniuses who said he was gone.

Lolz at the commenters running DJ down. The guys has singlhandedly won 6 games for the Birds and specifically lost 2 (one of them by way of suspension). Who would you replace hiim with? Santana Moss. Some of you need to get a clue.

jimqk calls posters here idiots but thinks djac is one of the best players in the league, pure comedy. Try to see the entire league and all the talent, not just the Eagles. Great post rich.
