Something I meant to get to yesterday but wasn't able to, given all the other news.

Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown spoke to WIP's Morning Show yesterday about his contract situation. He had talked to both The Inquirer and Daily News earlier this week, but something he said to Angelo Cataldi and company caught my attention.

It was in reference to the Eagles' decision to rework Brian Westbrook's contract prior to last season.

"At the end of the day, you’re saying, 'If I do it for him, I can’t do it for another guy,'" Brown said. "Well I didn’t start the floodgate. It opened when Brian [Westbrook] had three years left on his deal. Yeah but you have four. Well if that’s the case, say ‘We did it with Brian with three. You have four. Play one more.’ But now don’t bring that up and say ‘Oh but you have four.’ That’s just because it’s something that makes you look good."

Brown, of course, is pointing out that the Eagles chose to rework Westbrook's contract when he had three years left. His argument is: Why should reworking my deal, which has four years left, be so crazy?

It's an interesting comparison because Jon Runyan also brought up Westbrook's contract earlier this week during an ESPN 950 interview with Mike Missanelli.

Here's what Runyan said when asked if the Eagles were trying to send a message to everyone with their sharp response this week.

"It’s a message for this one. Everybody has their own," he said. "Brian Westbrook went through the same thing last year and ultimately got it done so it’s just one of those games everybody plays. That’s the thing. Depending on who it is and what your value is, the rules of the game change also."

It's clear that Eagles players took notice when the team reworked Westbrook's contract.

And interestingly enough, that might have been something the Eagles' brass anticipated.

I went into the archives to find Joe Banner's comments after the Eagles announced the new Westbrook contract. Banner recalled a deal with Brian Dawkins two years earlier and compared it to Westbrook's.

"We think of [Dawkins] as a Hall of Fame-caliber player. I feel like I'm standing up here again right before the first preseason game of the season, we're talking about a Hall of Fame-caliber player," Banner told the Daily News. "This is a premier guy, leader, player. What he has done over the last few weeks here, with this going on, and still working - he came out there when he had strep throat and practiced. When he had an excuse, regardless of what was going on. He just wants to win so badly. He wants the team to be the best it can be.

"That's what drove him; it's what has always driven him. If you put the same things I said about Dawkins a few years ago, if you take somebody with that kind of talent, and those kind of intangibles that they bring to your team, in who they are in their heart, in their head, that is the guy you want to make sure is feeling good about things, if you possibly can."

The message seems clear. If the franchise values you at a certain level, it's willing to make concessions, as was the case with Westbrook. And as may be the case with Donovan McNabb if the team reworks his deal this offseason.

But for others like Lito Sheppard and Brown, sounding off really isn't going to get you anywhere.

Much more today, including a draft profile of Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy, who Sports Illustrated projects as the Eagles' pick.

Plus we have a draft chat with the Daily News' Paul Domowitch at noon.

And I'll be hosting a chat Saturday during the first round of the draft.

When sheldon out plays his current contract like westie did.... Then and only then should his contract be changed. He is reliable and plays well. But there is nothing he has done that is spectacular. The only spectacular play brown had (that I remember) was the hit on reggie bush in the playoffs. Maybe a couple of other plays.....but not much. If anyone can think of things that brown has done to earn a contract, please point them out......

I always thought Sheldon was a smart guy...at least by NFL standards. Westbrook was an All-Pro RB...he was coming off 2 of the best seasons in franchise history...he was one of the top 3 RBs in the NFL at the time they signed that deal...he was that exceptional case that the Eagles mentioned in their statement. Brown isn't even the best CB on his own team. Also, Westbrook never got negative with things, he never bad-mouthed the team, he never demanded a trade, etc. Westbrook took a very positive approach to things. Look at the the guys who decided to go the negative route with requests for contract re-negotiations: TO, Trotter, Corey Simon, Lito, etc. The Eagles don't respond well to negative tactics. They won't give in to contract demands like that and, if they trade or release you, it won't be until after they've run you through the ringer a few times.

sheldon isnt bwest...sbrown has never made the pro bowl and has never been considered one of the top cb's in the NFL or on the eagles for that matter...the move to re=do bwest's contract shows that if u out perform your contract and play at an all-pro level that you will get your $$$ if you go about it the right way you cant make demands, bad mouth the FO or draw lines in the sand with the eagles and expect to get paid

It is time for someone to tell Mr. Brown that he is killing himself. The more he talks the dumber he seems. His agent has done him a huge disservice in not clamping his mouth shut, but I guess he is looking for another payday on the back of Brown, so he is under motivated to help his client out (its win-win for him. Too bad that the Eagles took the bait and opened their mouths or Brown's self destruction would be near complete and all he could do is sneak into camp and hope that Andrews, Patterson, Westbrook and other do not greet him with a beat down for dragging them into his mess.

I had to laugh at Banner's comment the other day when he said that this Brown situation is so absurd that Eagles fans are actually on THEIR side on this one. I don't think he meant it as a joke but it was pretty funny to me. It is pretty ironic. I mean, if the Eagles fans are almost all siding with the team, then that should tell you something Sheldon.

Sheldon Brown shows up in highlight reals... both for his big hits, and for the way he gets beat by all of the pro-bowl WRs. One of my favorite was when he was supposed to be covering Larry Fitzgerald and ended up 10 feet behind him. Nice. And then, of course, Plaxico Burress has made Sheldon his itchB time and time again. Sheldon is now 30 - I don't think he's going to get any better at this point. He's lucky to still be a starter for a team right now.

Note to Mr. Brown: since the entire city of Philadelphia is siding with the FO on this topic you may want to reevaluate your demands. Also, you are filthy rich and we all know that must be terrible burden when some of your cohorts are filthy stinking rich but your a big boy and should learn to live with.

Ultimately they should be mad at their agents. Why sign such a long extension for $7 million? Because the agent is out for his percentage of the bonus, and not for the best interest of the player. I mean Sheldon was figuring to be the starter long term and you sign the first extension waived in your face?

Come on Sheldon, Westbrook has been arguably the best All Purpose Back in the league for years. He outplayed his contract and the Eagles paid up. You've been a solid cover corner but you don't make big plays, the kind of plays that warrant a big contract. There is nothing wrong with your deal and you certainly haven't outplayed it.

Westbrook in-decline is worth more than Sheldon Brown in his prime. No comparison.

While Westbrook clearly wasn't happy with his old contract, he never went to the media with it and he never dragged unnamed teammates into the dispute. Brown has really gone about this in an unprofessional manner and I can't see a scenario playing out that will benefit him either with the Birds or another organization.
