The many twists and turns in the Eagles' acquisition of restricted free agent running back Mike Bell finally ended last night shortly before the midnight deadline for the Saints to decide whether to match the Eagles' offer sheet.

Saints coach Sean Payton said this morning at the NFC coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings that Saints' brass was still discussing what to do at 8 o'clock last night.

"It's tough, and we were still discussing at 8 last night, but overall we looked at organization and this puzzle is bigger than just one part, which makes it hard," Payton told Daily News contributor John Ingoldsby.

The Saints were never considered likely to match, given that they have plenty of running-back depth, and a bunch of restricted free agents to sign and pay, and they tendered Bell at the lowest level. If they wanted to pay Bell the $1.7 million or so he stands to make from the Eagles this coming season, the Saints could have just tendered him at the second-round level.

Still, Payton said, it was not easy to part with Bell.

"It's always a difficult decision with a player who meant so much the year before. [General manager Mickey Loomis] and I spent a lot of time on that decision," Payton said. "One of challenges of free agency -- Philadelphia is getting a real good football player -- is you begin to deal with your own economics and dollars. When Mike came to New Orleans we were able to get a young talented back that helped us in a lot of ways."

Bell adds an interesting piece to the Eagles' offensive puzzle. He appears to give them inside thrust they haven't had since Duce Staley left following the 2003 season. But Staley was able to be effective because he fit Reid's system. He was an excellent pass receiver, though he made it clear he would rather carry the ball than catch it. Bell showed good hands his rookie year with Denver, when he caught 20 passes for 158 yards, but Bell was almost never on the field in the passing game over the ensuing three seasons, catching a total of six passes for 33 yards.

Bell ran for 654 yards last season on 172 carries with five touchdowns in 13 games.

His agent, Josh Luchs, said the move to Philadelphia will be "bittersweet."

"He has a lot of gratitude for the opportunity they gave him," Luchs told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "And he has a love affair with the fans there. But he has such a small window to capitalize on the window of opportunity to take his career that was resuscitated by the Saints to another level."

Jeff ?....Money and power and arrogance do not give a person class.....and those three certianly don't have it.......Nice Job Sean Payton.......(oh, and Joe, it did not cost him a penny to be nice and respectful and classy)

The only thing Payton did was make a public comment (a positive one) about the player. It is the same thing Reid always does. People get on Reid for not making a personal phone calls to the player when he is gone.Did I miss the part where Payton was talking to Bell right up until the end?

"see how a classy coach and organization says good-bye to a player..." - nuggett Do you ever watch the press conferences or read the press releases the Eagles have when they release a player? They are always generous in their praise. If you don't like the Eagles fine. But it's not OK to justify your hate with made up facts.

Hey Falkirk, Here's a fact, the Eagles have been 20th in overall payroll expenditures over the past five years. They were 18th in the league last year and have cut more than $30 million from next year's payroll. The Superbowl participants this year: Indianapolis spent the 3rd most over the last 5 and the Saints ranked 7th in this category. This off-season the Eagles have cut payroll more than $30 mill. According to Forbes Mag the Philadelphia Eagles are the 7th most valuable NFL franchise. From these numbers I deduce that the Eagles have the means, but are cheap organization that relies on suckers like you. You can’t tell me that Aaron Kampman or Julius Pepper wouldn’t have been better fits than Daryl Tapp, he of the 2 ½ sacks. The Tapp trade was again about one thing: Money. Clemons actually makes more than Tapp so the Eagles further dumped payroll. How about safety? How has that been addressed? Oh and the O-line, does anyone seriously think Jackson will be ready? The Eagles are plenty happy to take advantage of the lack of a salary floor this off-season. We are not the Buffalo Bills or Pittsburgh Pirates, but they are more than happy to act like they are. I have the disposable income, but will not buy anything from them until something changes.

daner92, let's get off the Peppers lament; the guy takes plays off, in fact, takes whole games off. Not the best investment by Chicago; it impresses people who like "names". Kampman, if they'd signed him, you'd be crying that he's another injured reject they signed on the cheap. People like you, no matter what a team does you just whine and moan; worse yet, people like you never change.

JBinPA, Is it your money? I love guys that are all about the Eagles finances. Are they giving you a cut? As for Peppers, he had 10 1/2 sacks, five forced fumbles and 2 Ints last year. Yeah he stinks. Maybe he "takes plays off", but he devastated Minnesota in a victory late in the season (yes I watched the game). Now, you say I’d be upset no matter what the teams does, so let’s talk about what the Eagles have done. Take a guess how many games Julius Peppers’ team won over teams with winning records last year? The answer is 4. Take out the last NO game and the number is 3. How about the Birds? They won a grand total of 1 game over a team with a winning record. That win was in week 13 over the mighty Falcons without their starting QB. Yeah, the Eagles have your acorns in their sock drawer. Right next to the stacks of Franklins…

daner92 - I'll rip them when they don't spend money, but signing big names on the downward slope of their careers isn't good strategy or salary cap management...even in an uncapped year. Think about all the scrubs and dead money we would have if they did. Bet you're a big Dan Snyder fan - how's he doing?

Who cares. He's a third string running back on a team that refuses to run the ball. Maybe he'll play linebacker.
