Geno Smith benched, Jets turn to Matt Simms at QB

The New York Jets have pulled their rookie quarterback.

Geno Smith has been benched by the New York Jets following a disastrous start that saw the rookie quarterback throw for 29 yards and an interception. Matt Simms warmed up at the break, not Smith according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, and will likely start the remainder of the game.

The Miami Dolphins currently lead 6-0 in a game kept close only by a missed field goal and stout Jets defense. Everything went wrong for the Jets' offense in the first half, with the team running the ball poorly in addition to contending with Smith's terrible passing.

  • Simms was effective when he last took over for Smith against the Buffalo Bills in Week 11. He completed almost 67-percent of his passes, gained 60 yards and threw a touchdown in a 23-point loss. It remains to be seen what will happen to the Jets quarterback position long term if Simms can have success again today.
