If Cox becomes a consensus all-pro at the top at his position, I wonder if Roseman will admit that he was fortunate that his non-commital yielded an enviable pick. Howie may love the Eagles defensive line, but that line's abysmal gap discipline and run play were reasons 1 & 2 why gaping holes frequently overwhelmed the linebackers. It tightened up some late in the season, but the damage was done. Not saying the linebackers are great...the line isn't either.

In Washburns system, I'm not sure how much gap discipline the line should be expected to have. If they're lined up in the 9 technique it's the linebackers responsibility to come up and read the rb. I thought our D-line was good against the run and our linebackers were just outmatched across the board.

Wash's system is uh, unorthodox, but what's more fun than a sack? Early take on draft around the talking head circuit is positive, of course you never know. But, are we feeling optimistic again? Maybe JC is a rapid learner, ready to take on Breez and Rodgers and RG3 and A-Luk. Maybe DeSean has lost his caution. Maybe Mikevick will slide. Come on August!

You're right sa_eagles. gnarly - the line is supposed to get up the field in the wide 9. The LB's are supposed to fill the gaps. The DL did their job last year, the LB's couldn't because they weren't good enough. The front office didn't provide the defense with the right amount of talent - THAT was the problem. Not gap discipline.

Haters will hate, sheeple will tow the line, time will tell.

Haters will hate, sheep will follow, and Howie/Andy will keep making lame excuses.

If everybody is cool with dumbing down DL responsibilities so that quarterback pursuit is its sole responsibility, there aren't linebackers out there who are going to fill Walmart-size holes AND cover tight ends, backs and anybody else. I'm not anti-wide 9, but deploying a scheme that opens a counter-move by the opposition means you'd better have that covered. For the first half of last season, the linebackers were frequently facing a runner who was untouched out of the backfield through the line. If that is the wide 9 design, and you pull up your linebackers for line support, a good quarterback will take play-action to new levels of proficiency! So you can lead the league in sacks AND have a bad pass defense. Sound familiar? I just think it is too convenient to lay all that on the linebackers. Yeah, they're small, and not particularly quick key-readers, but the Eagles' whole basis for liking them under-sized is because they are fleet-footed to pass-defend.

The DE was effective against the run - they got lots of stops behind the line of scrimmage - it was on the 2nd level - responsibility of the LB's and safeties where the Eagles got beat repeatedly on the run.

Using the Wide 9, you are willing to trade some mid-level runs given up in exchange for more stops in the backfield. However, you can't be missing tackles like the Eagles were doing so much of last season.

The wide-9 is the bird's defensive problem. I just hope the staff is flexible enough to scrap it when they see it isn't working. Unfortunately, they have drafted and traded for players to fit this system.
Also, letting Asante go is a big loss. Why would you let your best DB go in a pass happy league? He was worth the price.
