The Eagles have not provided an update on wide receiver Jeremy Maclin's condition today, but general manager Howie Roseman said he expects Maclin will be back in town when the team returns to NovaCare this weekend.

“We totally anticipate Jeremy being part of our football team," Roseman said an interview on 97.5 The Fanatic. "We anticipate him being back here shortly, with us when we get back to Nova Care.”

Roseman said there was nothing to report at this point, but added, "Hopefully we'll have an update for you guys shortly."

Maclin's brother, Andre, told the Sporting News that his brother was "fine" and that an update would come today. He said he could not reveal details because "they have us under a gag order."

In his news conference earlier, coach Andy Reid said, when asked about the timeframe for an update,  “Today, right? Well possibly today. We haven’t finished today, I don’t think. We have a few hours.”

"We’re still waiting on some tests to come in and we’ll able to give you that information," Reid said. "When we get it, we’ll get it to you and let you know."

Maclin has been in St. Louis getting tests for an undisclosed illness that has sidelined him for all of training camp.

Maybe, henceforth, the press will have the good sense not to report on anything that Maclin's family says.

BREAKING NEWS: The Eagles have not said anything about Maclin other than they haven't said anything about Maclin.

All kidding aside, it is an enlarged spleen. When an athlete has mononucleosis, the spleen enlarges to produce more antibodies and more white blood cells and to continue acting as a blood filter. These functions are vital for the athlete with mononucleosis. However, if the sick athlete participates in contact and collision sports, he or she has a higher risk of injury to the spleen. Often, the enlarged spleen protrudes from its normal position under the protection of the rib cage. Therefore, the spleen can be ruptured easily with a direct blow to the left side of the upper abdomen. As a result, athletes with mononucleosis are restricted from contact and collision sports. Once the athlete has recovered from mononucleosis and a doctor has confirmed that the spleen is no longer enlarged, the athlete may participate in his or her sport once again.

I used to think the best doctors in the world were at the Mayo clinic. Now I realize, most of them are at philly.com.

Help me with the diagnosis, every fall I am really excited it seems to last until year end or mid January. Then I feel lousy, really angry this lasts until April when I start feeling a little better then in August I feel great again. It has been happening for the last 50 years. Any ideas?

Molloy, that makes perfect sense, but I noticed that everything notes he suffered from "mono-like symptons" but nothing has said that he was diagnosed with mono. I hope you are right, but I think this is leaning more toward eaglessuperfan's take...that its something uncommon and very difficult to diagnos. I hope he's OK and back with the team soon.

Molloy, that was my guess too. Wrote that on profootball talk weeks ago. No one has picked up on it yet. Guess sportswriters have never had mono and been restricted from contact. Cheers.

I commend the Philly writers for resisting the urge to speculate on Maclin's illness, even if they have a pretty good idea what it is. That being said, the mono thing is the most plausible right now.

Molloy is likely correct. Apart from the fatigue, the reasons why mono can keep athletes out for months is the concern over a ruptured spleen. Sadly, there is very little you can do to rush that along. Working with high school athletes, I have had incredibly healthy kids contract mono at the start of a season and miss the whole thing (nearly 6 months). Hopefully, since this all started in March, we are close but it could be a couple more weeks before he is cleared for contact.
