Reid defuses QB issue, praises Kolb
Daily News staff
In the immediate aftermath of his team's 27-24 victory over San Francisco, Andy Reid expressed pride in his team and defused any issues about the quarterback.
"Michael is still the starting quarterback so we won’t get that controversy going there," Reid of Michael Vick, who missed the game with a rib cartilage injury.
Of Kevin Kolb, Reid said, "All in all, he managed the game ... He was accurate. He had no hesitation putting the ball in tight holes. He kept up and played like Kevin Kolb can play." Reid also mentioned that there were a few plays that Kolb would like to have back and would know more once he reviewed the film.
Defensively, Reid said, "The defensive line stepped up and played their hearts out against an offensive line that I think is pretty good." That line was without Brodrick Bunkley (left elbow) after the first series and lost Trent Cole to hamstring issues at the end of the first half, but he returned.
The Niners made the game tighter than anticipated with a rally in the fourth quarter, "You have got to play four quarters against them," Reid said. "This is what they do. I am proud of my guys. It’s been a long couple of days on the west coast. They stay focused."
Special teams remained a struggle, right from the opening kickoff. "Special teams, we're working through that," Reid said.
This is non-news. If the Eagles want to win against a half-way decent team.... of course Vick is the quarterback. The 49ers are horrible! Eaglesfan804
Kolb played well today, but he can't make the plays down the field. He'll be a good backup in this league for awhile and make good money, but let's be honest: the arm just isn't there. Even the throw to maclin was a great adjustment by the receiver on an under throw ball. Jack Burden
give him time. He's got his first win under his belt and weathered a stormy early season mini qb controversey. nothing succeeds like success. i know i'm being a bit optimistic but a far sight better than 5 weeks ago against green bay frankmullarkey- Thrilled that 'the birds beat a team that the 'experts' picked them to lose to...GO EAGLES!!! johnnyu
Vick will be 31 years old...next year will be a lost season due to the players work stopage...there is no super bowl victory this year with Vick. By the next opportunity... Vick will be 33 or 34 and his legs will be gone. If you want excitement now and a few extra regular season wins, then Vick's the man. If you want a championship then you need to take a few lumps now and let Kolb develop. Brains always prevail over athleticism at the QB position in the big games. Carlos2
Frank, he definitely looked better (and if celek made a few catches it would be even more pronounced), he just can't create down the field. Hence the gameplan and he fact that Desean was not a big part of it. Even in the Saints game last year that td was a shorter patter that Jackson broke... Jack Burden
Carlos2, I totally agree with you. I see Kolb being great if they will just give him the team and go with it. I see his arm as being Very good. Not sure what others are looking at there. Go ahead Eagles and trade him if you want to look real stupid in a year or so. The Convick is a ticking time bomb! wbm
yeah, the 49ers are horrible. and the jaguars were horrible, too. but then they beat the colts and bills, so are they still horrible. the saints lost to the cardinals and almost lost to the 49ers. so, i ask you, who in this league isn't horrible? pbowers
A victory is a victory...support Kolb...after all he is an Eagle. Ask Dallas about victories....OPPPS their 1-3. CHUCK JR
Carlos2, wbm- Korn on the Kolb was decent today- but he does not have a strong arm on deep throws and therefore our team will lack the explosiveness that our young receivers provide- it would be a waste if we did not have a guy at QB with a Laser arm-Vick is a proven star in this league- be careful about "development of a QB" Alex Smith and David Carr were both 1st Pick overall and were given 5 yrs. each to start and "develop"- they never did and they never will- Korn on the Kolb may be never better than average- Vick's legs will not be done at 34, 35- Mcnabb is 34 and can still run, Steve Young could still run at 35 , He will still be the fastest QB in the league at age 35- That's a 5 yr. window to win this whole thing- Vick gives the Eagles the best shot to win SB in next 5 years unless you get P. Manning or T. Brady (who have also lost SBs by the way) jttemp2000
@Pbowers....It's called "Any given Sunday." On any day, any team can beat another team if things fall right, even if the losing team would be the winner 99% of the time. The Eagles are well on their way to their 7-9 season. Phillyrussian7- Exactly, pbowers! A win on the road is not to be scoffed at. The Eagles were 3 point underdogs and won the game. The Jacksonville team described by the Philly writers as "Putrid" is 3-2. The team described by the NFL Network talking heads as the best in the NFC East is 1-3. Survive early and improve as the year goes on. With the youth, new players and natural progression of Andy Reid teams, it is reasonable to expect this team to improve as they go.
