Reid: Nate Allen likely out Monday

POSTED: Monday, November 8, 2010, 3:34 PM

Nate Allen, the rookie who has started every game for the Eagles this season, has a neck sprain and will "struggle" to play against the Redskins, head coach Andy Reid said Monday.

Allen was replaced Sunday by fellow rookie Kurt Coleman, a seventh round draft pick who had played in spots throughout the season, but never as a starter. If he starts this week, Reid said he will face a bigger challenge, now that opponents have seen more of him.

"The key now is, if you're a young guy and you've got to continue to learn, if Nate's not able to go this week, you know that there's a little film out there on you, and teams are going to have time to try to exploit weaknesses and you've got to make those adjustments and make sure that you strengthen those weaknesses."

Coleman was a four-year starter at Ohio State, but as a back up, gets few repetitions in practice, so he was facing a tough challenge stepping into the game and facing Peyton Manning.

"He played in big games you know that coming in, you know he's smart … and physical," Reid said.

Much of today's press conference focused on Coleman's hit on wide receiver Austin Collie and the resulting penalty. Reid saw both sides of the issue. As a coach, he defended his player's hit. But he said he understands the NFL's intention in cracking down on head shots.

"I don't see what else he could have done differently," Reid said of Coleman. Coleman appeared to lead with his shoulder into Collie's shoulder. Any helmet-to-helmet contact came on the follow through of the initial collision.

"I completely understand. I’m behind what the league’s trying to do," Reid said. He later added, "In the heat of the battle, I can’t sit here and tell you that I’m the calmest guy in the world when I see those things. But when you step back and you look at it, I understand the big picture things."

In other injury news, cornerback Ellis Hobbs is going to see a back specialist to see if his back is affecting his hip flexor injury. Reid was non-committal when asked if Hobbs could play Monday. Reid said the Eagles have talked about bringing in cornerback Al Harris, formerly of the Packers, but cautioned that Harris is 36 and coming off of a serious knee injury.

Guard Max Jean-Gilles has a concussion. If he can't play Monday Nick Cole will fill in. Todd Herremans has an ankle injury, though Reid said he expects his starting left guard to be OK.

And Reid again praised his defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who came under fire after the team's meltdown in Tennessee, but whose defense held Manning to just seven second-half points Sunday. He said McDermott had a "phenomenal plan for playing against Peyton and their offense" and credited the defensive line for creating pressure on the quarterback.

the defensive line really made the difference in this one. even though the colts still scored over 20. now if the eagles can just keep playing at this level.

Forget about Al Harris. The Eagles track record in bringing in vets coming off a serious injury is abysmal. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Harris is signed before the next Eagles game.

i cant even believe they name dropped al harris. patterson really had a great game against wayne. i agree the line did just enough to force manning into quicker throws. we need to come up with better schemes to cover TE. bradley looks ridiculous. he is burnt on almost every seam pass.

Nick Cole cannot hold off larger rushers. No one else though I suppose.

Eagles D line on running plays got no push. Patterson gets no penetration. Pass rush was good and I'm happy they blitzed at the end especially. Bradley was all over the place. He's still not in football shape as you could see he's a step behind in pass coverage however he was doing a good job filling holes. He's still our best LB though. They need to draft another one next year. Top priority. All in all the team stepped up when they had to. If some of the refs - calls were done correctly the Birds would've won running away. Horrible thing to see Collie down, but that was a football play and it was a fumble. He was running with the ball and that was not an incomplete pass. He lost the ball on the hit. Bad call. And bad call on Nick Cole hitting Peyton and bad NO-Call when Vick got pulled down out of bounds.

REID called that a good def. game plan. The cornerbacks were playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. They should in the receivers faces, banging them.PEYTON killed them on short passes all day. He was able to step up in the pocket. No penetration up the middle. Also, when is REID going to instill discipline. Too many penalties. That's on him.

Bradely's only impact on the whole game was injuring our own player. I don't see why every O.C. who game plans for us doesn't use the T.E. as the first progression. Bradley gets beat EVERYTIME! Patterson looked great, Please, anybody but Macho that guy is soft

...lets wait and see what zero777 has to say about all this 1st. i peeped your bleep cmmt earlier. lay-off the smack dude. back to fb. the eagles d played well in the 1st quat and 2nd half overall, but this defense still stinks. chalk that up to bye- week luck. p-diddy was right about roids in the nfl. it's 5xs worst than what it is in mlb. these nfl players get bigger and faster by the week. this is the worst tackling eagle d-fense i've seen since.... last yr and the season before that. andy's playing call in the redzone was god awful again. we should've went up 21-0 in the 1st like the giants did. andy continues to get worst as a coach. reid could've challenged that helmet call on the indy-rec (i think) which was a fumble but he was already out of chal-flags. vick is sick, but he's too reckless with his body and kolb will be back in there 2-3 weeks tops the way he plays. gotta start sliding and running out of balance dude. i'll chalk up his snapping the ball with 9 secs still on the play-clock when the birds were trying to run out the clock up to nerves. anything is possible. but at this point calling the birds sb contenders is delusional.

...i think i was wrong on the andy chall thing, but regardless this team has some taent, but andy reidis getting in the way. why in the heck is b.celek not involved in the offense. this guy is one of the best tight ends in the league. but he's being used as an xtra blocker because reid has no dept on the o-line and that was before the injuries.

The 3-4? Eagles can't find three good linebackers and you want to play four?
