Reid: Not worrying about job status

POSTED: Friday, December 2, 2011, 12:46 PM
After a disappointing showing Thursday night in Seattle, some Eagles fans are calling for Andy Reid's dismissal. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

With his team at 4-8, coach Andy Reid said questions about his job status are "logical questions" but that he was not worrying about that.

"As a coach, you don’t do that," he said at his day-after news conference. "I’m being as honest as I can with you. I don’t worry about that. I worry about getting better, and that’s where I put all of my energy in. That’s what I can control and become a better football coach, and make my assistants better while at the same time, make my players better.”

As he was after last night's game, Reid was asked about the focus of his team, especially as the season has slipped away.

"The focus is there," Reid said. "I think when you are losing, you almost push too hard in certain situations. You get into the what-ifs. You have to really fight that as opposed to where it just flows like it has before and in the games that we've had success."

He was asked what he tells the players now, especially as some of them could be playing for jobs next season.

"I'm honest with them," he said. "I make sure that I am shooting their way straight, including myself. I'm very real with the players. I've got a good locker room where they will work hard. What do you do now? You just continue to try to get better. That's the approach now. This is all of your business so we can all get better at it."

Obviously, the expectations have not met the reality for this team.

"I said this during training camp, there is a difference between expectations and reality," he said. "The reality is that every year you have to come together as a football team, coaches and players all working together and pulling the rope in the tug of war in the same direction. So, I think we’re all searching. The players, these guys want to win as professional athletes. They want to win and be successful. Coaches want to win and be successful. Everybody is looking for that answer right now, and you’re going to get a variety of answers from different individuals and I’m not worried about that. What I am worried about is what do we need to do to get better and get those answers out there, then work on those in practice.”

Asked to explain how they got here, Reid said he has explained what went wrong each week. He pointed to turnovers, penalties, and red zone issues. He also took the blame.

"I look at the facts of it and I will also say that it’s my fault for not putting the guys in the right position to make plays. And I believe that it comes back to the head coach and that’s where it should come back to," he said.

Reid was asked whether he had spoken with owner Jeffrey Lurie about Lurie's disappointment with the season.

"Jeffrey is very competitive so he’s disappointed as we all are,” Reid said.

Reid said he will not change the evaluation process that he uses before the team plays next, at Miami.

Does anyone really think Lurie fires Reid after the season? He owes him 10mil or so over two years and since Lurie isn't one to pay off dead horses, I don't see him caning AR yet. Besides, since Reid was "all in" with Vick, who also cannot be cut next year due to extreme cap money, Lurie will keep them both around for at least one more year. All we can do is stop going to games and yes, I'm aware the tickets are already sold, but stop going and buying beer, hats, shirts, parking dollars, etc..It's our only chance of helping Lurie change his mind about this shipwreck of an NFL Team.

The Eagles defensive needs are obvious. But I think Reid had buy-in to hire the zero experience DC (a friend of the team so to speak). That is why he is not worried.

I knew Vick was a jinx for the Eagles. He did his time. But having a dogfighter as the face of an NFL franchise is a mistake in this pet-loving country. Vick can be spectacular, but fate has a way of evening the score. When Philly didn't win it all with Vick last season, losing at home to Green Bay in the playoffs, I thought the window was closing quickly because Vick has trouble staying healthy. Now, after being hailed by many experts as a Super Bowl team, the wheels came off the wagon. The Eagles will never win a title until Vick is off the roster. I know the Vick angle irritates Philly fans, but that's the baggage of Vick. Right or wrong, it will always be associated with your city and team until he is elsewhere.

I haven't been confident in Reid since the NFCCG against Carolina.

Andy Reid's idea of a balanced offense:

Throw long, then throw short, then throw left, then throw right, then throw from over center, then throw from out of the shotgun and, finally, to mix things up, call a play action pass that no one will ever bite on.

Yes Reid and Vick will be here next year. I don't think tearing the team up is necessary. There is plenty of talent on this team, just need a few pieces. A veteran LB so the young LBs will have someone on the field with them to show them how to play the position. Draft a LB that can actually run and tackle, get a taller WR who can make the tough grabs to go with Maclin. I think the safeties are ok just need to be used better. If you notice, when Coleman blitzed, Allen was way off the receiver, he has to be in the receivers face use proper technique (which is all in the hips) and run with the receiver not allowing the QB to hit the receiver as a hot route because of the cushion. I put that on scheme, we definitely need an experienced DC. Andy and Marty have to be more balanced. McCoy should have at least 20 touches a game running. The players ultimately need a coach who they will respect. They aren't listening to Marty or Juan and they only tolerate Andy because he doesn't throw them under the bus when they play horribly. Probably why they have no problem playing horribly because they know the head coach is just going to say, we need to do a better job putting guys in the right positions to win. Coach do I get a check on Tuesday? Yes. Cool, holla!

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but what else is there to do?

There must be something wrong with either my computer or the philly.com web site. I just got back from walking the dog and logged on to check to standings and I did not see anywhere in the headlines the Laurie fired Reid and the coaching staff. Perhaps i should run spybot again.. perhaps the computer's been infected with malcontentware or something. Maybe I should pull an Eagles and do a hard shut down. I hope my memory is ok and everything isn't lost..is it too late to back up?

IT MAY BE THE COACHES FAULT TO A SMALL DEGREE, BUT THE MILLION DOLLAR PLAYERS ARE ON THE FIELD AND DON'T PERFORM TO EARN THAT KIND OF MONEY,,THERE ARE PLAYERS GETTING OVER 800.000 A GAME AND A COUPLE OVER A MILLION A GAME FOR DOING NOTHING ,WHERE IS THE JUSTICE,,THE FANS PAY FOR IT IN THE END,,

So, if the same things go wrong every week and Reid claims responsiblity for them going wrong every week, then why isn't he fixing these things? Not exactly a ringing endorsement why Jeff Lurie should continue to employ him, is it?

To answer your question, there are 10 million reasons why Lurie will continue to employ him. Reid has 99 problems and losing his job isn't 1.

What does Reid have to worry about? He's made millions and is set for life. It's not like if he loses his job he won't be able to feed his family or bail out his kids.

    Cowher?

    Based on 1 super bowl?

Puh-leeze. Reid needs to be replaced, but the Eagles would have the same results as the Redskins bringing in Shanahan.
