Reid: Mornhinweg-Washburn took care of business like 'grown men'

POSTED: Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 1:30 PM

Andy Reid said that he spoke to both Marty Mornhinweg and Jim Washburn after their sideline spat, that the offensive coordinator and defensive line coach cleared the air and that the Eagles had moved on and were focused on Thursday’s game at Seattle.

“It’s an emotional game,” Reid said Tuesday at the NovaCare Complex. “It doesn’t matter if you’re coaches or players, things happen. You take care of business like grown men. They’ve talked, I’ve talked and they’ve worked it out and we’re fine here.”

The confrontation took place midway through the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Patriots. The Eagles were leading, 10-0, at the time. There was some initial speculation that Washburn confronted Mornhinweg because he was calling too many pass plays and the defense was gassed as a result.

“I know that was reported, that’s not the case,” Reid said. “It wasn’t an offense versus defense thing.”

Several sources close to the situation have also said the spat was not about Mornhinweg’s play-calling. While one source told The Inquirer on Monday that an accidental bump initiated the tiff, another source said Tuesday that a derogatory comment by Washburn to Mornhinweg started the quarrel.

Mornhinweg did not back down and responded in a way that drew the attention of nearby players and team personnel, who stepped in, the source said. Mornhinweg has not met with the media since last week. Both he and Washburn, through an Eagles spokesman, have declined to comment.

Washburn is known for not mincing words.

“He’s a fiery guy with a chip on his shoulder and he says what’s on his mind,” Eagles defensive tackle Trevor Laws said. “Sometimes he’ll rub people the wrong way, but to tell you the truth, that attitude spreads down the line to the defensive line.”

Washburn has made similar remarks to other coaches on the sideline during games this season, two team sources said.

“This isn’t the first time guys get emotional on the sideline,” Reid said. “It’s that type of game.”

Uhhh, My guess is that Washburn is gone after the season. No one messes with Andy's Minister of Arial Assault.

I'd love to hear Washburn pressers after bad losses if he were head coach. Maybe the Eagles aren't so hot this year because Washburn and Mudd are so potty mouthed it offends the extremely wealthy, refined players on the team.

Dave in Cincy: I suppose you'd prefer a Courier assault on the ground? Or maybe something a bit more classy and balanced like Garamond?

Actually, while I enjoy football Eurostile from time to Times, I prefer American Type(writer) football. On the ground or through the air is fine with me as long as it's not comic or casual.

I don't believe a word that comes out of the Eagle's front office.
I'm SICK of the insanity on offense when your best back leads the league in rushing by accident, as just a passing thought by Reid/Mornnenwig. I'm sure Washburn and the D are too. I'm waiting for the game when they pass on every single play. Then they can die and go to..........

Just more evidence of a dysfunctional team. No doubt there are coaching factions fighting each other. Lurie, blow it up, start over, don't waste another year of Reid_ism.

The Tonner can't believe people aren't busting down the door to interview Marty Mornhinweg for a head coaching position. Why is that...hmmm??? Oh that's right, he sucks. Good enough for the gold standard though. Stay gold Pony Boy...

Trevor Laws said. “Sometimes he’ll rub people the wrong way, but to tell you the truth, that attitude spreads down the line to the defensive line.” I guess Jim's fiery attitude only lasts 3 quarters!

That "fiery" attitude would probably last for FOUR quarters if Moronwig's ineffectual pass happy philosophy didn't force them back on the field, tongues dragging, after every subsequent three and out. Meanwhile, Bellichick (A truly GREAT coach) employs the very same tactic of strategically mixed ground AND air assault that keeps OUR defense on the field for long periods of time. The very same strategy many more knowledgeable posters have been advocating Reid employ.

More smoke and bs from the master of deceit AReid........washburn is gone at the end of the season...He thought it would be fun, but now that he sees the inside he realizes it is disfunctional....just like the national media....it looks good from far away but under closer examination it is a joke...thanks Jeffery, Joe and Andy....but the truth always comes out in the end.....and the talent level selected by Andy is only below the coaching choice and chemistry under the dictator.....

The ship is sinking, the crew (asst. coaches) are fighting over who gets what lifeboat, the team is rudderless and Reid insists it's business as usual. Well, that puts a perfect point on why they're 4-7. Reid is incompetent, cannot comprehend the situation and refuses to admit that it is all of his own making. If he has a shred of decency and any dignity left in his obese body, he'll resign. He owes the fans at least that for turning this season into the debacle it has become due to his incompetence in all areas of coaching.

When I read the article, I thought I'd post an analogy of the Titanic (Dream Team) - like these coaches bickering as the whole s**thouse goes down, but you basically did it for me.

Why is it so hard to fire anybody in Philly? Whether it's fat Andy or Queen Arlene, it seems like the incompetent will have job security they simply don't deserve.

younged - you got it out before I did lol Last Sunday the defense didn't wait till the 4th quarter they packed it in the start of the 2nd quarter. I guess they all had the strip club in mind. No wonder DeSean wants more money, he wants to make it rain even harder.

Given the recent performances of some of the defensive backs and recievers, It was refreshing to see someone affiliated with Eagles defense bring a physical edge to the game.

Likewise, it was equally refreshing to watch someone affiliate with Eagles offense willing to take a hit without turtling.

One bad season and its off with his head.you people are not true eagles fans.personally i have enjoyed ARs time here in philly.he turned a horrible team into winners.i dont agree with every move he makes.but someone tell me who out there is a better canidate to come in and coach the eagles?gruden?he signed with espn, cowher?it took him 14 years to get a ring with pitt.but he was a winner for many years.who else? no-one. castillo was a mistake.that i agree with.dont forget the 27 new eagles, who only had a short time to prepare for this season.and recently.the injuries to macklin, vick, drc, and many more.the core team has only played a few games together.we have a bunch of kids on this team who need to develop.we need a LB bad.i dont think vick is the answer either.but its all we have now.and what is reid supposed to come out and say? THIS TEAM SUCKS?name a coach that has ever done that to his own team,.......god its one bad season....every coach has them.the eagles will be fine.next year when we are back to 11-5,12-4 all will be forgotten.i say just take it with a grain of salt this has been a forgettable year...but lets not let reid go yet.

I'm in favor of Washburn for Head Coach. A fiery personality like Wasburn would have this team playing at a higher emotional peak then Pillsbury dough-boy Reid ever could.

WAshburn is the only non-insane member of the coaching staff. Zordich and Duce are too young to speak out yet and are still thankful that Andy gave them jobs. Mudd is an old warrior that has a few loose screws using his strange method. The rest are completey inept. Doug Pederson was never a good QB so why would you make him a quarterback coach ? genius. Marty Morhinweg went 1-15 as a head coach so why would you make him your assistant head coach AND offensive coordinator ? What ? Juan Castillo coached defense at Kingsville A&M Highschool...almost thirty years ago...so why would you make him DC ?? And Rory Segrest is just Rory Segrest. WHY WOULD YOU LET HIM BE YOUR SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR...and then the next year MAKE HIM YOUR DEFENSIVE LINE COACH ???? WHY ????? UNLESS YOUR ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT. THAT IS THE ONLY ANSWER. REID IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST COACHES IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE. HE WILL NEVER WIN A SB AS A HEAD COACH BEING IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING. NEVER.

I think Washburn reminded Marty of the time in 2002 when Mornhinweg as Detroit head coach won the toss and took the "wind" and not the ball in OT vs Chicago. Of course, the Lions lost.

When Reid said nothing happened, why would anyone believe him? What was he going to say,"Wash called Marty an idiot in front of players and Marty couldn't back down."? Andy is probably the only one who doesn't call Marty an idiot!!!

As another poster said on another article, it's like Andy's on the Titanic, in the wheelhouse not to bravely go down with his vessel, but bellowing to anyone who'll listen that everything is fine and the situation can be rectified by putting the ship in better position to avoid any more icebergs.

And Juan's in the engine room, and he's workin' hard, man. (this is my own line)

Andy and his morons can't count the number of players on the field. It's 11 genius. Twice! You think this team can really run a no-huddle offense? Ha Ha Ha. Cough Cough, Time's yours.

The Eagles have a penchant for changing for change's sake. When something works one week, they abandon it the next. They've out smarted themselves. They can't adjust. What happened to the screen pass, or short yardage pass and open up yards after the catch? What I keep seeing here are the 60 yard bomb pass, sometimes we make it, most of the time we don't. I was thinking the same thing as Washburn watching all these long pass plays, not being able to convert 3rd down plays, yet they kept doing it burning out their defensive line in the process. They had a good rush in the beginning of the game that became completely shot by the 3rd quarter. Reid better get a handle on his coaches. When the players lose confidence all is lost. Quit hanging your heads, you bunch of over paid, lily hearted country club players. The same for the coaches as well.

Run the DA%$ ball.... thats why Vick is hurt because of pass happy Andy and Marty... 4 down a 1 on the 2 yard line and you pass with the leading NFC rusher in the backfield.. What does that say about our O-line? They cant push the Defense back 1 yard for Shady? You had to keep Tom off the field to win... If I was Washburn, I would have been mad at Both Andy and Marty.... Will somebody take a sign down to Novacare complex and tell Andy to run SHADY.... PLEASE..... Yall did it before....
