Reid: Cooper out for six weeks

POSTED: Sunday, July 29, 2012, 10:07 AM

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Riley Cooper will have surgery to repair his fractured left collarbone and will be out approximately six weeks, Eagles coach Andy Reid said Sunday.

"They'll plate the collarbone," Reid said. "I'm thinking six weeks -- in that area."

Cooper broke his collarbone on Saturday during a one-one-one drill. Reid said that he had no plans to acquire another receiver with Cooper out.

"I'm just going to leave it the way it is," Reid said. "We're just going to leave it and let some of the young guys get some work in and see what they can do."

The Eagles open the regular season in exactly six weeks and Reid was asked if Cooper could be back in time. "It'll be close," he said.

Cooper's injury could benefit rookie Marvin McNutt, a similarly-sized receiver.

"I think he did well yesterday," Reid said of the 6-foot-2, 216-pound McNutt, a fifth-round draft pick. "That was good to see. He's a big physical kid and you saw him attack the football and make some big plays."

Jason Babin, who suffered a calf strain on Saturday, should be out for around a week, Reid said. The defensive end did not have a scheduled magnetic resonance image Sunday morning.

"He had swallowed a thermometer and you can't through the MRI with that in your system," Reid said.

Reid said that tight end Brent Celek (knee sprain) was day-to-day. He said that defensive tackle Antonio Dixon, who suffered cramps Saturday, was OK.

-- Punter Mat McBriar, who the Eagles signed to a one-year deal on Wednesday, is dealing with some issues over his working VISA, according to Reid. Still, Reid said the Australian should be able to practice with the team by Wednesday.

The thermometer is technology they use to monitor players safety in the heat. It is a pill they swallow that keeps an eye on their temp. If it gets to high they pull him out of practice. This became more widly used after the Cory Stringer heat death.

Cooper's best chance to make the team was the IR anyway.

Howie, dust off that boilerplate injury release contract.

Sounds like Babin joins a long list of people whose headquarters are where his hindquarters should be!

I heard that Jason was known for talking out of his rear end, so I could understand the confusion with the thermometer.

Instead of Plaxico, sign TO to the vet minimum with incentives to play the slot. If Vick got a second chance, considering what he did, TO surely does as well. Disregard the fact that the only time in Reid's tenure that he got to the SB was with a HOF WR named Terell Owens. Sign him ... NOW !!!
