It’s been 10 years since this Philly flock has switched up its look, but a fresh, new makeover has landed.
Come Sunday, football viewers across the country will see new uniforms on the Eagles cheerleaders at the team’s home opener at Lincoln Financial Field.
Once again, world-renowned designer Vera Wang, who created and debuted the cheer squad’s visible white, black and green spandex pieces in 2003, undertook the hefty responsibility of creating stylish athletic wear in a city filled with tough critics.
She says of the experience of re-creating the pieces: “It was an honor to create the uniform design that has now become synonymous with the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders.” On the actual designs, Wang adds, “I always embrace the opportunity to work on extensions of my original creations and enjoyed designing new signature pieces for the beautiful and talented cheerleaders to wear this year.”
What are your thoughts on the Eagles' cheerleaders' new look?
New items will continue to be unveiled throughout the season. Each signature piece will be midnight green and show the Birds logo. Every piece has been designed by Wang, including a black sparkle sneaker for squad members to wear throughout the season.
The Eagles cheer squad in 2003 was the first NFL troupe to have its uniforms designed by a high-fashion designer. Wang's name over the years has become synonymous with haute couture wedding gowns.
A close friend of Jeff and Christina Weiss Lurie when she was first commissioned to design the cheerleaders’ uniforms, Wang once again worked side by side with Christina Lurie to revamp the pieces.
Lurie says: “Vera beautifully achieved our vision for the signature pieces with a fashion forward and sporty look that represents our style. We feel the uniforms are ideal for the cutting-edge image of the cheerleaders – chic while displaying athleticism.”
Wang, a former figure skater, has taken her athletic background and knowledge to create costumes for Olympic athletes like Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan. Professionally, she’s also served as a mentor to Coatesville-born figure skater Johnny Weir.
Wang, 63, started as a fashion editor at Vogue and was design director at Ralph Lauren before launching her eponymous line in 1990.
The Vera Wang name has now turned into a lifestyle brand, with a line of home products for Kohl’s and a lower-priced collection of gowns called “White by Vera Wang” offered by Conshohocken-based David’s Bridal.
As part of the Eagles debut, the cheerleaders appeared at the GBK gifting and styling lounge at New York Fashion Week.
Wang, meanwhile, revealed her Spring 2014 collection on Tuesday - interestingly enough mixing in baseball jackets and windbreakers as part of an overall sporty spring/summer line. We wonder if her recent work with the Birds had any influence on the line.
The Eagles’ home opener is 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 against the Chargers.
