Paul Domowitch's Eagles-49ers Report Card

POSTED: Monday, October 11, 2010, 12:57 AM

Here are Daily News columnist Paul Domowitch's grades for the Eagles' 27-24 win over the 49ers in San Francisco. You can add your own grades by voting on our poll page here.

RUSHING OFFENSE: Playing with a fractured rib, LeSean McCoy rushed for almost a hundred yards and notched his fifth rushing touchdown of the season from 29 yards out. QB Kevin Kolb had a big 19-yard scramble on a third-and-18 play.

Grade: B-plus

PASSING OFFENSE: Kevin Kolb stood tall behind some shaky protection that saw him sacked 4 times. He completed 12 of 14 passes in the first half and had just 7 incompletions in the first 3 quarters.

Grade: A-minus

RUN DEFENSE: After giving up 169 rushing yards to the Redskins last week, the Eagles did a good job on the Niners’ Frank Gore, holding him to 2.6 yards per carry in the first 3 quarters.

Grade: B-plus

PASS DEFENSE: After doing a decent job against Alex Smith for three quarters, the Eagles suffered another fourth-quarter collapse. Smith completed 11 of his first 15 passes in the fourth quarter and threw 2 TD passes to get the Niners back in the game.

Grade: D

SPECIAL TEAMS: Eagles kickoff coverage was bad. They gave up 44- and 61-yard returns to Ted Ginn that kicked-started touchdown drives. David Akers had 2 field goals, including a clutch 45-yarder with 4½ minutes left that gave Eagles a 10-point lead.

Grade: D

OVERALL: The Eagles’ pass defense buckled in the fourth quarter, giving up 2 touchdowns that made this game closer than it should have been. But they hung on for the road win, as Kevin Kolb played turned in an impressive performance.

Grade: C

How in the hell did we end up winning this game? This defense is deplorable. 1998 was pretty bad .... this year will be even worse. I think McCoy manned up tonight until 'the slide' and he'll be feeling it pretty good tomorrow. There is one game every year that Big Red teases us with the run game(except late 2006) and this was that game. Go Phil's !!!! BTW read the write up on Chooch on the baseball side. He's my MVP in '08 WS and co-MVP w/ Halladay this year.

He didnt complete a single pass to jackson, and you give him an A minus? I think you're smoking crack Domo.

That was an 0-5 team and it took 5 turnovers and a defensive TD to beat them by a field goal.

    K.Kolb sucked.

I think Domo's grades are a hair generous this time around, C- would be mine. King Dunlap doesn't belong on a UFL roster, BTW.

if you don't like Kolb, fine. but he hardly sucked. he was efficient and almost mistake free at the very least. if not downright good. shady showed ba||s, but D needs to improve. can't let the niners look like montana is still playing...

Paul,GREAT win on the leftcoast, the NINERs were desperate team needing to get a win,,Kevin Kolb played a Great game,he managed the game well,he lead the offense,he was aggressive,he played Smart football,he had a 103% QB rating if BIG RED has any sense,he would leave KK alone no wildcat nonsense is needed when Kevin is at the helm..the BIRDS could easily be 4-1 with out the dropped TD pass lass week..atleast we won't have to put up with the KK bashers this week..KK is getting better every game,he moved the team well in the Deadskins game, this game was no suprise..the KK haters need to shut-up..GO BIRDS!!..GO PHILLIES!!.....wolf.

QB rating isn't a % wolf, but you're right, Kolb played well. Celek had some drops and the O-Line is the worst Ive seen in Philly. Forget Tre Thomas and Jon Runyon... Where are Ron Solt and Mike Heller?

Thats how you game plan for a backup nice safe passes, he didnt have to think so much. Its the way KK played in his 2 starts last yr. That is a horrible team in SF so i wont read too much into this one.

Bobby April - F(ire, please); Mcdermott - F for sending Graham back in pass coverage on 3rd and 21, and for not changing coverage and sending Bradley 25 yards downfield to get consistently beat by Davis; MM - C, good play calling for the most part, except that Buckley wildcat on 3rd and 1. Seemed like the coaches were doing everything they could to keep the 49ers in it.

What coach punts twice when he is inside the 35 yard line in a close game? And I don't want to hear about the wind! Fat Andy is without a doubt the worst "game day" coach in the league and perhaps in the league's entire history.

They were playing the 49ers, Kolb held the ball to long took some sacks that he did not have too, forced some ball that he is luckiy they were not picked off, in the second half they shut him down the offense only had 3 points and this was a must win game HURRY BACK MIKE

Kolb played well.....Had some dropped balls and ones that should have been caught specifically Brent Celek.
He has been off a bit this year.
Anxious to get Vick back in the line up!!
D still struggles with the power running game...Remember this was an 0-4 team!

This was a "trap" game. The Eagles avoided the trap.

First off, all of you who say "this was the 49ers"...remember a few weeks ago we said, "this was the Jags", then they ripped the colts for 31 points!

Kolb played well, but I'll agree that the Eagles were doing everything they could to hand the game over to the 49ers. two of those three Kolb sacks can't be blamed on holding the ball too long - dunlap simply sucked. Put Austin Howard on the gameday roster, he can't do any worse.

lol wolf. ANY other QB in there & you'd be talking about how the 9ers are 0-5 (remember all the games Mc5 won against lousy teams?), about every pass that should have been a pick & how they should switch to your boy toy. He looked decent at best & got a win against a team that did everything they could to lose this one. The plus out of this game is that KK did show some improvement, although there was little room to go down. A win is a win though. Whomever is at QB next week I'll be rooting for the Eagles from Section 243!

I just need somebody....Anybody to please tell me why D Jackson, and Macklin's stats drop when Kolb is in the game??? Thats 2 weeks in a row...2 Weeks!!!! If no one knows I'll tell u....He's scared of interceptions, no heart, no faith, no need to start. And Reid saw what in Kolb as a starter in camp???? He won't throw the ball down the field!!!! Hurry back Vick!!!!!

D is a fair grade for the special teams. Isn't April supposed to be the guru of special teams coaches? Kolb deserves an A-, especially playing behind King Dunlap. The passing offense deserves a C, because the line is part of the passing offense. Other than Dunlap, though, the line was decent, and Herremans seemed to have a real good game.

Kolb can get plenty of playing time in Buffalo...... Philly is just happy Kolb did not do anything to embarrass the Eagles last nite... I'm not paying for admission to the Linc until Vick returns... I just can't pay $100 Dollars to see a Quarterback that can't go down field to one of the Best Receiving corps in the NFL..... small ball will only take the Eagles so far....

as long as you realize you were grading on a curve....the niners ar a bad football team going nowhere and yes we won.....but let's not get carried away.......we sill nhve no linebackers who can cover, no run stoppers, no offensive line and no game day coaching ......

We need a real QB playing for us, and his name is Mike Vick

I say Kolb was efficient. he did not win or lose the game. The problem is the defense is mediocre. Seems like things went straight down with the new D-coordinator. I say get a new D-coordinator ASAP! And add a couple of "real" safeties and LBs and corners while you're at it!!!
