Patterson Will Be Paid; Vick Ready to Go

Nobody knows if three ghosts visited Howie Roseman Wednesday night, but Thursday morning, the Eagles' general manager called agent Peter Schaffer, looking for a way to fix the problems created when the Eagles placed Patterson on the nonfootball injury/illness list, and triggered a clause in his contract that would take at least $125,000 out of Patterson's remaining 2012 salary.
They ended up revising the contract, taking out the clause, and resubmitting it to the NFL. End result: Patterson keeps his money.
"That's where the strength of a longstanding relationship comes in," Schaffer said Thursday afternoon. "This grew out of Jeffrey (Lurie) and Howie's desire to take care of Mike Patterson."
Patterson, 29, underwent offseason brain surgery, and the Eagles put a clause in his contract that would get some of their money back if the condition left him unable to play, and on the NFI list. They recouped about $1 million from Patterson when he was unable to play until midseason. But Schaffer --- and quite a few Eagles fans -- felt contracting viral pneumonia in the final month of the season wasn't something you should dock someone's pay over.
Ultimately, the Eagles came to see it that way as well.

Meanwhile, the Eagles confirmed a report that Michael Vick has been cleared by an independent neurologist and can play next week, when the Eagles host the Redskins. Of course, Nick Foles is now the designated starter.
The Eagles said there is no word on LeSean McCoy, who also is awaiting concussion clearance.

Inactives tonight for the Eagles, in addition to Vick and McCoy, are Brent Celek, Greg Salas, Chris Polk, Kurt Coleman and Matt Kopa.
Should have never come to that. The eagles wind up doing the right thing but take a public relations black eye in the process. Fan74
Seems to me that the Eagles listened to the public drubbing that they had been taking in the media and with fans. Doing the right thing after the fact doesn't matter much. They still showed their true colors as a classless organization. RH
It was never about money, he was put on the non football injury list because it was a non football injury. Not a fan of the front office but I think they did the right thing but people were too quick to jump on them of course. Sidewinder7- Yes, it was certainly about the money. They could have put him on the NFI and still paid him, which is what they ended up doing.
I'm glad to see the Eagles reconsidered, and did so quickly. Yeah, the fans probably forced their hand by complaining so loudly, but in the end they admitted they were wrong and corrected their mistake and that's the important thing. bc3030
'This grew out of Jeffrey and Howie's desire to take care of Mike'
bs. it grew out of the PR backlash and general growing disgust with the Eagles. Good to fix your screwups. Better if the guys in charge don't make such obviously boneheaded screwups. Let's hope Howie's a fast learner or next few years are really gonna suck for Eagles fans. raoool
Howie read the Comments section on Philly.com yesterday. chocolatethunder- @raoool: You stole my thunder. My thoughts exactly. They were publicly embarrassed by the heartless move and the thought that it might affect Laurie's man-purse. Well, they've got a lot more catching up to do in the PR department. This faux pas by boy wonder Howie was just too over the top for even Laurie to accept.
the clause in the contract dictated that Patterson not be paid....He and his agent agreed to the clause when signing the contract. The Eagles had to REVISE the contract and re-submit it to the NFL.... read folks..they couldn't pay him without violating the contract.....Sheeeesh!
DONDEN31- It still would not have happened unless this whole thing went viral, which it did. Past PR blunders by this team shows how they "roll". If you believe otherwise, you must also believe in Santa Claus.

Can't put toothpaste back in the tube. The Eagles organization is entitled to it's mistakes, but they continue to show classlessness toward anyone not named Lurie. I'm ashamed to call the Eagles my team because his is a tenure of thrift in several aspects. Thrifty with money spent, thrifty with concern for fans and thrifty with compassion for the players. Not to mention thrifty in the area of championships. The more announcements they make, the less I like him. It's only due to my allegiance to the NAME that I stay interested.
LURIE HAS TO GO!!! Atomic Fury- Lurie is the best owner the Eagles have ever had.
