Packers coming to town

POSTED: Sunday, January 2, 2011, 7:22 PM

Eagles coach Andy Reid, unwilling to risk an injury to a starting player in his team's meaningless finale against Dallas, played pretty much nobody. The final score was Cowboys 14, Eagles 13. Only fans of tedium were entertained.

But enough about the game.

The big news happened in other cities and another time zone -- the Giants beat the Redskins in their final game and the Packers beat the Bears in their's. As a result, the Eagles will host the Packers in the wildcard round of the playoffs next Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

There is nothing to be made of Sunday afternoon's season finale. Kevin Kolb didn't look very good at quarterback but the line in front of him looked even worse. As for the other side of the ball, the Eagles' defense actually looked pretty decent; of course, they were defending against the legendary Stephen McGee.

Not much to say here, really. Reid played this one just about as cautiously as is humanly possible. He has a long record of treating meaningless games in just this way -- but, then again, the teams he rested years ago were veteran groups, playoff-tested and much more predictable than this young group that played badly for 7 1/2 of the 8 quarters that preceded the Dallas game.

Now, after this annoying interlude, all eyes return to Michael Vick -- the single most critical Eagles player in the Andy Reid era.

Well, Packers aren't the greatest Defensive team that the Eagles have faced, so there is a shot at a win. Problem is is that the Pack are 5th best against the pass and 15th against the run. Hopefully Marty and Andy can exploit this, but I doubt it. Could be a shoot-out, but I'll take the team that doesn't have Dimitri Patterson as the CB to take home the victory.

Green Bay has no running game. They throw more than the Eagles do. Aaron Rogers is a great QB, but he hasn't won a playoff game yet. Eagles should be able to put together a game plan for victory.

Rich, edit out the "their's" in paragraph three. In contrast, the "semicolon-of course-comma" conjunction in next paragraph is a thing of beauty. ¡Viva la policía gramática!

So I guess the mighty Giants aren't in the playoffs?

Hee hee hee! Ha haaa ha ha!

Packers/Eagles should be a good game. Neither team is clearly superior to the other, so I expect it to be close, with neither team running away with it. If Vick is on, Eagles win 31 - 24.

Birds are the 5th best team of the 6 NFC playoff teams. As usual horrid offensive line and one of the worst defenses in all of football. if Mike can manufacture 30 points they have a chance otherwise this game will be over by the 2nd quarter.....realistically they have very little chance of winning

Kolb is another four letter word.....never will be a franchise winner in the NFL. No heart! I've been an Eagles fan for decades....he's just a 'bucket man'. Never done anything that really counts! (It take passion to discipline dogs when they don't perform to your standards... Vick needs a great post-season, or see you next year. Even he is relapsing to his old self the last few games.)

Eagles 44-42, with seven lead changes. O-line only allows two sacks, and #7 plays the entire game without getting his collarbone broken. (Hey, isn't it nice that we won't have to see Bitter-Beer-Face Tom Coughlin in the playoffs? What a dork!)

This is frigging unbelievable! How does Andy not put his best players on the field for Kolb? McNabb played with Hall of Famers on offense most of his career. Vick . So what does Kolb get Chad Hall (Who is this guy?). Kolb growth is being stunted by Andy. Time to take the chains off and let Kolb lead this team to the promised land. Kolb can do things no other QB can do and our fanbase deserves the best product on the field at all times. Kolb if given the chance will destroy the Packers. Andy now is the time to go for the kill unleash the beast that is Kevin Kolb!

31 to 10 Packers in the 4th quarter. This time no comeback. Just like last year's finish(losses out). This year Reid get bounced up to the front office. Reid will assist in revamping O-Line, obtaining new cornerbacks and getting an experienced Defensive Co-ordinator. He will also pick and recruit his sucessor who is a semi-retired Super Bowl coach who can mentor Vick and Little T.O. Jackson.

Packers beat the Eagles by one touchdown in the first game of the season. That means nothing. Not a thing. Utterly meaningless. Might as well not have happened. Neither team is now what they were for that first game.

Why all the Eagles hate here tonight? Is it from fatalistic fans who don't believe in the team, or is it from losers who have to spread their hate here? I suspect it is a little of the former, but mostly it is from the losers who can't stand to see other people actually enjoying the fact that the Eagles exceeded expectations this year. Sad little monkeys, those losers are.

Who cares about GB. I booked my hotel to Dalass back after the Texans games. NFL should put us alone in the NFC and have the other 31 teams battle it out on the AFC side.

Eagles 38 Packers 10. These people who say the Packers will win this game are complete morons who know nothing about football. Most of them can't even spell. Must be the rotten cheese they're serving up there in Wisconsin these days. Packers, like the Giants, stink, and it was a fluke that they won that first game this year. Rodgers is a wuss who'll have to wait until next season to see if he can finally win a playoff game. I guarantee that the Packers lose this game big time. Like Vick said at the end of the first match-up, if he had been in the whole game the Eagles would have won. They will win this time. Book your tickets now for Chicago, where the Eagles will play another bunch of chump pretenders about to get slapped out of the playoffs.

Lonewolf 11, agree. In hindsight they should have played Kafka. Kolb trade went from a possible 1st rounder to a sweaty jockstrap. Loved the series where he attempted 3 passes, 2 were knocked down and the 3rd hit Cole in the arse. Didn't think anyone could throw 3 passes and not get the ball past the LOS BUT, live and learn. The fumble/six, the INTs, the wormburning accuracy I heard so much about, quick release, leadership, yada yada yada...yeah, where is wiffocrite anyay?

Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten all the propoganda about hitting receivers in stride for significant increases in yards after the catch. I had forgotten about how the quick release was going to take pressure off of the lineman.

    Again, thanks!

With our key players rested a bit, perhaps we can overcome Mr. Reid's normally ridiculous play-calling.

Today, Kolb got a taste of what McNabb suffered through for years. The difference is that McNabb won in spite of those circumstances.

Dallas redux indeed. Minny even more so game plan-wise. Eagles problems are mainly on the sidelines. Hopefully Marty gets a job...anywhere and Reid remembers McCoy is still on the team. Every year, same thing. Pas, pass, pass...lose.

    Here! Here!

We’re in! We’ve got magic on offense and our defense can stop the run. They are also opportunistic.

We got the bye that we would have gotten had we been the 2nd seed. Can we go on a 3-game winning streak against the best teams in the NFL?

    Didn’t we already do that?

Talk about mailing it in, Hofman; you should look in the mirror. You wrote absolutely nothing about the game; I think there are a couple of things you could have focused on. A backup RB who got 99 yards rushing, the ineffective play of Kolb, the wilting of the Eagles defense, and the fact that the Eagles have backed into the playoffs following two incredibly uninspired performances. I understand Reid protecting his best players, but I saw no fire from the Eagles at all. The Packers are quite likely going to roll Philly in Round 1.

You can't take anything from today's game and apply it to next week's. There were only two starters in on offense (one after the right guard got injured) in a meaningless game. I'm not sure how many starters were in on defense, but it was mostly made up of second and third stringers, too. What you saw today has no bearing on what will happen next week.

I don't see how you can say the Eagles "backed in" to the playoffs, either. They won the division outright. They beat the second place team twice. and were 4 - 2 in the division overall. The fact that they lost the last 2 games, one of which was meaningless, does not prove they "backed in". They earned the division title, and their place in the playoffs.

False - in 2001 the week 17 game didn't matter and Reid rested the starters. Pretty young team, and the previous seasons was the first time the Eagles made the playoffs in few years (kinda similar to this Eagles team...)

The Eagles are one and done. Not a tough team, period. Teams like Pittsburgh and New England play teams they're supposed to destroy and that's what they do--the games are over by halftime. The Eagles play the freaking Vikings (who couldn't beat Detroit) and get HAMMERED on their home field. Sorry--I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid this year.

The one main reason I think the Birdz can beat the Pack is that McCarthy is a bigger stoonad than AR on the sidelines. McCarthy is the only dolt in the NFL who manages his TOs worse than Andy and challenges plays worse than Andy.
Put up or shut up time Mike - you said in September if you had 4 quarters the Eagles would have won - well get your running shoes on - you're going to need them. The O-line is a mess.
