One story about Nick Foles' preparation habits

POSTED: Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 10:13 AM

There will be a lot of discussion this week about Nick Foles. His teammates have raved about him since training camp. Here's an anecdote that tight end Clay Harbor shared that sheds light on Foles' preparation:

The Eagles can download game preparation material onto their iPads. Brent Celek had a couple of players over for dinner last Thursday, and Harbor was one of them. Harbor doesn't have wifi at his home, so he downloads all the material onto his iPad at the NovaCare Complex. The process takes a few hours, so Harbor downloaded the gametape before dinner and planned on returning after dinner to pick up the iPad.

Harbor was at Celek's home for about two hours. He returned to the facility around 7:30 p.m.. He walked into the tight end's meeting room, and Nick Foles and Trent Edwards were watching film, studying the opposing defense and drawing plays. The work day had been over for a few hours, and neither quarterback was expected to even play the game.

"That just tells you something about Nick," Harbor said. "That's a game he didn't know he was going to play. No idea he'd be in. Just great preparation. And that's the kind of player he is."

I for one am all for a change. Rave about him now. I just hope he isn't Hoying in sheeps clothing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what wins in this league. Pocket passers who can get the ball out quick or extend the play by moving around in the pocket (Mannings;both, Brady, Rogers, Rothlisberger, Breez). You can have your eye-popping plays, Sport Center highlights, and Wow moments. That's just what they are; plays, highlights and moments; NOT WINS. We've had this with Cunningham, Vick and to some extent McNabb. Just look at RGIII, Newton, it's the same thing, eye popping plays NOT WINS. It's looking like the Colts made the right choice. The NFL is color blind. You just have to win. I hope Foles can do the job or it will take years to climb out of this mess.

my first thoughts - where was Vick? Probably at home with his family, so can't really criticize - assuming Foles and Edwards are bachelors. @alihajishank, great point on Vick, never see him looking at pictures on the side lines, etc, like the mannings, rodgers, brees, etc. Wonder if that has anything to do with anything.

LOL!!!! He brought these study habits to the Eagles from the U of Arizona... the place where he made one bowl appearence (he wasn't even the starter to begin that year) no bowl victories, and did score a single point in is one miserable bowl appearence. The place where he transfered to because he couldn't beat out Kirk Cousins at Michigan State the current back-up for the team the Eagles will be facing next week.

Yes... the U of Arizona's 2 time honorable mention recipient is the savior the Eagles have been waiting for. LOL!!!!!

I hope Vick plays this week also but not for the reasons you cite. I hope he plays because I'm hoping it will help to hasten Reid's exit.

All you guys hating on Foles - why not let him play a full game with practice first. Will he be a Superbowl winning QB? Who knows. Will he be better than Vick? Probably. He can't be any worse!

You guys are really pathetic actually! You all are typical of the ignorant fans form Philly that give the rest of us a bad name. So, go back to the 800 Level, drink your Schmidt's beer, and pi ss all over yourselves! Let the kid play and he might surprise you!

Eaglemaniacle...funny, they must have edited this article after you read it cause I can't find the part where it guarantees that Foles is going to be successful. The only part I see is where it says he was at the facility late studying film. That guarantees nothing. Does it mean the kid has a good work ethic? Probably, yea. That's about all you can glean from it. So all you knee-jerk fools who want to declare Foles a bust after 2.5 quarters of play with no practice are complete idiots. Foles did some good things and did some bad things. The way I saw it, though, the bad things he did were correctable things and the good things were instinctive things you can't really teach. Hopefully the bad things get corrected with time and practice. I have no idea, though, what Foles will ultimately be, but neither do you. So stop with the idiotic declarations.

The fact that he was at the facility doing extra film work and study that alone tells me he is looking to correct his mistakes. That mental attitude will help to make him a success. I agree with you on those knee-jerk posters who couldn't wait to call him a failure after three fourths of ONE GAME as though he's been playing for FOURTEEN YEARS.

Funny how all you are hating on Vick now...where was that in 2010 when he had his greatest year ever?? Everyone's failing to realize that 2010 was the last year he had a solid O-line (which led him to pass for over 3000 yards and run for over 500 yards in 12 games). All the problems started when Reid tried to get fancy in the offseason and made all these personnel changes (bringing in washburn and mudd, and moving castillo tot DC). Now I've been calling Reid out since the 2008 season so maybe I'm biased. But then again, virtually EVERY aspect of this team has changed (players, personnel, hell even the front office was gutted) with the exception of him and Marty. Wonder what the problem really was, hmmmmm

MRD, guess you feal proud of that statement about Foles being no better than a college player, let's see, he's a rookie who has never started an NFL game, so guess you are right, pheww! Just sayin'...
