If Jeff Garcia is coming back to the Eagles for a third stint, the quarterback’s return won’t likely happen – if at all -- until after next week’s draft, a team source said.

Garcia said in an e-mail to the Associated Press Wednesday that he would welcome a return the Eagles. He said he had spoken to the team, but that nothing was imminent.

A message left with Garcia’s agent, Steve Baker, was not returned Wednesday night.

Garcia has been out of the NFL since the Eagles released him last September after a two-game spell. That was the 40-year-old’s second go with the team.

He backed up Donovan McNabb in 2006 and took over late in the season when McNabb suffered a season-ending knee surgery. Garcia helped guide the Eagles into the postseason, winning a first-round playoff game.

McNabb, of course, is now with the Redskins. Garcia told the AP that he would be willing to help mentor new starter Kevin Kolb. Michael Vick is currently Kolb’s backup, but he has made it no secret that he prefers to start. The Eagles are saying that Vick is off the market, but that may have something to do with the lack of offers.

If Vick were to return in a Wildcat role next season, however, the Eagles might favor bringing in a veteran who is better versed in the Eagles’ offense. Garcia has a long-existing relationship with Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, dating back to their days together with the 49ers.
