Mike Kafka fractures left hand; Nick Foles to take snaps as No. 2 quarterback
Zach Berman
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Intrigue was added to the Eagles' No. 2 quarterback competition on Saturday after coach Andy Reid revealed that Mike Kafka fractured his left hand and will not be able to fully participate for three weeks.
Kafka, the third-year backup quarterback, had his non-throwing hand stepped on during Thursday's 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason opener. Kafka will be take part in 7-on-7 drills and some individual drills, but will not be able to participate in any drills that require him taking snaps. Reid estimated a recovery time of three weeks.
We’ll see how that all works out," Reid said. "Keep an eye on it as we go"
Kafka could be seen with his left hand wrapped after Monday's walk-through, although he was rushing to a meeting and did not have time to comment on the injury.
Reid also said that rookie Nick Foles will take the snaps with the second-time offense in Kafka's absence.
Foles outplayed Kafka on Thursday. The rookie went 6-for-10 with 144 yards and two touchdowns. Kafka went 5-for-9 with 31 yards and an interception.

- WR Jeremy Maclin, RB Dion Lewis and DT Cullen Jenkins all will miss practice with "slight" hamstring strains suffered on Thursday. OL Brandon Washington has not been cleared to practice because of a concussion. DE Jason Babin (calf), WR Riley Cooper (collarbone) and CB Cliff Harris (ankle) continue to miss practice because of previous injury.
- DE Trent Cole and TE Brent Celek will both practice. FB Emil Agwenagu, who has been practicing at tight end, will return to fullback now that Celek is back.
- The Eagles will wear pads during Saturday's practice and have physical practices during the next few days. They're off on Wednesday and will return to a game schedule on Thursday.
iggles got vick starting.
no worries.
... bloodymess
pre season performance is iffy at best but so far Nick Foles looks like the future. mike garman- Foles and Edwards better step up and take advantage of this situation. Foles looked pretty good in his first NFL game. Edwards looked good in the two minute drill making good decisions. Considering Vick's past years, chances are they'll get to play at some point during the season. MrPhilly
Ther is no intrique in this issue...Kafaka is a clipboard holder at best.....the tryouts for Backup have begun....and if it is a rookie ok, if it is edwards ok....but that stupid blind toos that resulted in an interception showed how bad kafka is.....his broken hand will only stall the time before he is cut.....andy may be stubborn but he is no fool and he needs to have somebody ready when miachel goes down and kafka is certianly not that guy nuggett
@nugget, you just defined intrigue leeal02
Gotta be honest here. Foles won't be ready to take reigns of an offense this complicated when it's regular season speed with top defenses on the field. My move would be to cut Kafka altogether and have Edwards as the primary backup. Edwards is accurate, and while he doesn't possess great arm strength, he's a smart dude that would be able to manage a game effectively for two or three weeks at a time. That should be the strategy. Then, once Vick is released in the offseason, the coaching staff can decide whether to hand the reigns to Foles or to grab a starter on the free agent market. vdstrading- Where's Jeff Garcia these days? Might want to give him a call. sj1926
Kafka better watch out or he's gonna be looking over his shoulder at Donovan McNabb. Boru
How did Kafka get his hand stepped on Thursday and then was seen with his hand wrapped Monday during walk thrus? Anyway yes please cut him already he can't play. Desert Steve
I believe McNabb could be the answer for QB #2. There'd be no controversy, no doubt as to who's leading the offense- but McNabb could step in and keep things going if need be...just a humble opinion mebphila- WHAT ?...there is a better chance that YOU could be the backup before McNabb......time for Don McNabb to take Teleprompter lessons and get on with his political agenda.
j.k.
The Edwards/Garcia comparison is so coincidental; a weak-armed, intelligent, clock managing backup who makes minimal mistakes can work his way onto this team....as the backup, you don't really have to WIN the game(s).....just don't LOSE them until the starter gets back j.k.- Yeah, that pass he hit that fat lineman with that almost went for a TD showed how he makes "minimal" mistakes. The guy has shown nothing in 3 years. It was a mistake to draft him. Time to move on. djlen
I think Birds wil trade Kafka for a low draft pic. Edwards will be #2 & Foles #3 this season! 4 QBs one too many because need space on roster. bill poore
