Michael Vick confirms he has a dog

POSTED: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 4:41 PM

A day after declining to answer whether he owned a dog, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick released a statement Thursday confirming that his family had recently obtained one.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement released by his publicist. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.

“I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”
Last week, Vick tweeted a photograph of him and his daughter seated together at a table presumably at home. To their right was an open box of Milk-Bone dog biscuits. The tweet was later deleted and was replaced by a similar photo, sans the Milk-Bone box.

Several days later, the Eagles quarterback was asked to explain the photos.

“I’m here to strictly talk about football,” Vick said Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex. “What goes on in my personal life is not to be talked about. What’s most important right now is the Philadelphia Eagles and getting the win Sunday.”

Vick could not own a dog during a three-year probationary period following his release from prison. He served 19 months for owning and operating a dogfighting ring and an additional two months of house arrest following his release in May.

He had spoken openly about wanting to own a dog and in July told CNN’s Piers Morgan that he did not want to deprive his daughters from having the pet because of his crimes. Asked what kind of dog he would get, Vick said that he would allow his children to choose, but “it certainly won’t be a pit bull.”

It's okay. No matter what anyone says, he's going to burn in hell for all eternity. That's god's creature he hurt, so he will. I know he will. Terrible man. How can his wife still be with him after that?

That makes me so indescribably angry when I read this! I can't even begin to explain how bad I would mess that Micheal Vick up!!!

This whole situation is just messed up. (I wanted to say f*cked up), but I'm more civilized. Now, this Mike Vick character should be on very VERY close watch, but should be allowed to have a dog. Now, who agrees?
Regardless of his "personal life", his actions became the problems and worries of others.

Be careful when you judge because we're all Michael Vick."In a conversation yesterday, someone said to me, “how am I ever going to watch an Eagles game and see that guy without thinking about those dogs?” My response: “How can you enjoy an Eagles game while you’re eating a hamburger or a hot dog made from animals who had a life and death every bit as horrible and unnecessary as Vick’s dogs?”--Gary L. Here's why he should not have a dog; here's why forgiveness is still a long way away for me; here's why, given the fact that he has NEVER directly apologized for the terrorism he inflicted on multiple dogs he should be denied a dog; here's why I do not forgive:

"As the Little Red Dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead."

The only intelligent comment made here is worth repeating: "But I think Vick should be thinking a little further than he apparently has. Someday, maybe very soon, his children are going to find out, either from schoolmates or the Internet, what their father did to dogs...This includes the beatings, drownings, electrocutions...When his kids look at their family pet, what are they going to think of Michael doing those things to dogs? To me, his message should be that your father did some really rotten things to dogs...and actions have consequences..one is which I'm not going to bring a dog into this household.

just that this story exists exemplifies where journalism has gone...down the trash chute of gossip. That's all. Are we that bored? Is life this meaningless? Phew. Do journalists have any respect for themselves anymore. Give me the good ol days when I watched and enjoyed football games without 24 hour news dissecting all the athletes. Hey folks. They're jocks. They have talent. They're flawed. So was Elvis. I just loved his music.

Let him have the dog. Let him learn to care for one. Let his children learn to care for one. When a man abuses his wife or girlfriend, he's allowed to sleep with them again or with other women. Who cares what Vick does as long as he's following the law and doing things right. Everyone wants to judge.

I have a number of issues with this story. First, wasn't Vick told he couldn't have a dog? Second, the fact that Vick evaded the questions shows that his character is still in the gutter. Third, deleting a picture that showed a box of dog biscuits proves he was trying to pull one over on people and finally, who the heck actually thinks the words in that statement belong to Vick? It would take the guy a month to write a coherent paragraph.

Raul Ibanez hit two homers last night for the Yankees.
Tied it with the first home run in the 9th then won the game in the 11th with his second.
We've had some great athletes here in Philadelphia over the years, Con Vick isn't one of them.

Isn't he a wonderful dad? He just married his kid's momma a few months ago - what was he teaching his children there ? Daddy has got 3 kids but he's not ready to settle down yet ?

I am sure his fellow Eagles will vote Mike some type of father of the year award. What a great guy.

Michael Vick was tried, convicted, served his time and by all accounts, caused no problems in prison. If his probationary agreement says he can now own dogs, so be it.

But I think Vick should be thinking a little further than he apparently has. Someday, maybe very soon, his children are going to find out, either from schoolmates or the Internet, what their father did to dogs...This includes the beatings, drownings, electrocutions...When his kids look at their family pet, what are they going to think of Michael doing those things to dogs? Do we really need to know what pets the Vick family have in their household? But since we know about a dog being one of the best cared for animals ever because of the nightmare Mike Vick will face if something happens to the dog even by accident.

It's not like he has set up a puppy fighting ring in his backyard, he got a dog for his kid/family and is learning that dogs can be more than just things to make fight, how is this possibly a bad thing that we need to care 2 shytes about?

Dude took an innocent dog in his bare hands and picked it up over his head and bashed it into the ground repeatedly until it died. He did that himself. He took part in electrocuting and beating other dogs to death. I wold be uncomfrtable with him around kids let alone a dog. That being said he's legally allowed to own one so let's just move on. Eleven more games and this nightmare is over anyway.

Sir/Madam, Are you a meat eater? Did you ever see videos of how they make the meat? You think of nuggets/burgers/cheese.. .did u ever know cheese is made out of an enzyme extracted from baby calf? so you are in no position to judge others unless u have discouraged all the fast food centers too. If you can't help don't, but don't get in the way trying to discouraging who are trying to be reformed.

I understand killing is killing and its absolutely heartless what he did. But he paid his dues and lost everything he has and is now trying to reform himself as a human being. If one person like him can change.. I am sure you can change your perception of forgiving and trying to impart good into people.

Are you on some sort of drug? You are actually comparing torturing animals for no reason to eating meat? Your premise is so mindbiggingly absurd I won't even argue with you. Vick did some really heinous acts that whack job supporters far too often gloss over with false equivalency nonsense like you're spewing. I'm a big believer in forgiveness and second chances but lets not equate that with forgetting the past. Having a suspicion about someone who callously tortured innocent dogs for no reason (even several that we're completely unrelated to dogfighting) owning a dog is natural.

11 games to go until this isn't our problem anymore.

Everyone leave this man's personal life alone!!! He is now allowed to own a dog now. He has done his time and also has contributed above and beyond to the animal rights and rescue programs. You can see and hear that he is a good person and has made a positive change in his moral standards toward animals and over all.
Now lets not turn this into a circus (media & fans) and lets get him to stop turning the ball over!!! People change and earn a 2nd chance. He was punished heavily and did his time. Let the man have some personal life! The guy tweets a picture of him and his daughter both putting in work (homework & film study) and no one take notice of his relationship with his daughter or his good example he is setting as a person and father in the picture. People only look and take something negative out of it! I am not the biggest Vick fan as a QB, but as a person I see the difference in him. I feel like it's a shame that he can't be like many other athlete's that use social media in which us as fans like to read and see.
If Ben Roethlisberger tweets a picture of him and his daughter are we all going to put it in the media since he had been accused forcing a girl into sexual acts? Ben has not ever been punished for his crimes. I know I know he was not convicted or even had charges pressed against him. While it's amazing what money buys you; because if he was not an athlete with his money and status no doubt he would have been arrested and convicted.

Nolan Ryan's take: Vick picked a time to get a dog.

This proves what an idiot Vick is. He's playing lousy, him and Reid are in an important year of their contracts, and he decides to get a dog to bring back all the attention on himself. Idiot. He also tried to hide it which proves he's a liar and can't be trusted.

Comparing this to Sandusky is way off and tasteless. He paid his price and is much older now. That dog will be fine. Saying he can't own a dog is like saying a sex offender can never marry.People change and he paid his debt to society. Now, aim with Johnny here..... "about those turnovers."

I think the Vick kids have a right to have a dog. I just hope it isn't named Checkers.

You attitude is worse than Vick's wrong doings in past. You really want to bring innocent kids into a discussion. You sir/madam are a heartless human. You should be ashamed of yourself

And meat eaters will learn that the meat they eat comes from highly abused and chemically enhanced animals, and that they are as guilty of animal cruelty as MV! And Michael, thanks for helping organizations like animal samaritans, PETA, and others that help fight animal cruelty.

Really? You're thinking about damn Football when the subject is clearly about how your so called "QB" should NOT NOT NOT have an kind of animal. Regardless of whether or not his kids have to suffer as well.

Whether or not Vick hangs or drowns this dog too with his own hands, it's a constant reminder of his sadistic crimes.

Sorry dude. We didn't realize you care more about football and turnovers instead of animals being abused and killed by your QB. We'll stop talking about Sandusky and his abuse of children and instead talk about the lack of sacks. Happy now?

There was a box of MILKBONE on the table on that photo. Milkbone? Really? That is the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese of dog treats - and I'm talkin about that fifty cent box not that deluxe version with the can of sauce. Vick could afford to give that loved pouch a bit more upscale. Miklbone? Really? I feels sorry for that poor dog.

You're right Darnel, Milk Bone is a ghetto treat. Michael should be ashamed to give a dog that junk. Heck, just reach on any supermarket shelf to eye level and get some Dingo Bones or a bag of Pupperoni instead. But Michael can afford the really good treats that you only find in doggie boutiques. A box of Milk Bone worries me too. Good spot by you.
