McDermott to Carolina; Mora talking to Denver?

Sean McDermott was not out of work for long.

The former Eagles defensive coordinator has been hired by the Carolina Panthers, according to reports from ESPN and the Charlotte Observer. A league source confirmed the hire to the Daily News.

He will be reunited with Ron Rivera, who was hired last week as the Panthers' head coach. Rivera and McDermott worked together for 5 years on the Eagles defensive staff.

Since leaving the Eagles, Rivera has been the defensive coordinator for the Bears and most recently, the Chargers. In his news conference, Rivera promised someone who meshed with his philosophy and also someone who would be aggressive in his approach. Of course, both Rivera and McDermott are disciples of Jim Johnson.

Reports last night from the NFL Network said McDermott was in contract talks with the Denver Broncos about their defensive coordinator opening after interviewing with new coach John Fox.

A source close to the situation told the Daily News that McDermott was offered a position by the Broncos as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator but turned it down to join Rivera with the Panthers.

Fox announced eight members of his coaching staff, including several members of his staff in Carolina, but did not announce a defensive coordinator.

Mora will interview tonight with the Denver Broncos, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

According to the Denver Post, McDermott and Mora were the primary candidates. Green Bay defensive line coach Mike Trgovac who worked with Fox for five seasons, could be a candidate, but he cannot interview until next week.

Mora is among three candidates who have been indentified for the Eagles opening, along with Eagles senior assistant and secondary coach Dick Jauron and former Arizona Cardinals coordinator Billy Davis.

Jauron remains scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns for their vacancy. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dave Wannstedt is also expected to interview. Wannstedt resigned as the Pitt coach under pressure. He was a head coach in the NFL with the Bears and Dolphins.

Maybe we could get Buddy Ryan to come back and show Andy how a real defense works?

andy will hire in the same way as he drafts. It will be someone who is supposedly "solid" or "steady" but it won't matter that they aren't star talent as it's Andy's "system" that wins games. What does this philosophy get you? A bunch of "steady" (meaning mediocre) players who are maybe ok but never quite good enough. Vick covered up a lot of stink on this team this year.

ziggy, too bad AR isn't as impressive as some of his former coaches.Gruden and Harbaugh were not locked into his pass at all times philosophy, hope Rivera isn't. of course, whatsizname didn't do so well in Minnesota.

Kwasi I agree. The 3-4 would definitely be the best move. 7 of the top 10 and 3 0f the 4 remaining defenses play a 3-4. Interesting article on d coordinator on www.phillyfandemonium.com. Say we are probably going to end up with Mora though. Check it out.

Why would the Jets let him walk after doing such an excellent job? Unless he wants to come here Pettitine will stay in NY. Mora Jr doesn't excite me. I want them to go after Mangini and commit to a 3-4. Mangini got two raw deals in NY and Cleveland. Did you see the interview with him on how to defend the Pats? Simply genius. He knows how to coach. Plus switching to a 3-4 would allow Cole, Graham, and Parker, our best pass rushers become the hybrid DE/LB like Orakpo, Dumervil, and the others. It is time to change the scheme to fit the players's talents, not the other way around.

Well, good for Sean McDermott. Great way to land on your feet! Just goes to show...one team's trash is another team's treasure.

I do believe I've said the following on Philly.com, but I'm not sure. I know I've said it on other websites. Why are the Eagles not considering Mike Pettine, Jr.? He's a local guy (His dad was a long time coach at Central Bucks West and he was a coach at William Tennent and North Penn before he went to the Baltimore Ravens and now the NY Jets.)? When he coached with the Ravens, he worked w/ Brian Billick and Rex Ryan. Rex thought enough of him to bring him to New York with him and name him his Defensive Coordinator. Last time I checked, the Jets have a pretty damn good defense. I think it would be great PR wise not to mention, I think he'd be even more motivated to help bring the Lombardi trophy home to his hometown team.

I know he's local and all, but we have to come with something better than that. That would be a sideways move and the Jets don't have to let him go to be the DC for another team.

JJ wasn't an appreciated hire when he came to Philly...it's easy to pick good coaches once they get good stats. AR has an impressive record of coaches who worked under him...he must know something.

The Eagles know exactly what they are going to do. Anything out of the front office is probably mis-information. McDermott most likely knew he was going to Carolina before he was "fired." I think these guys thoroughly enjoy feeding BS to reporters. They must laugh themselves sick about it.

Memo to Reid, Roseman, and Banner, go after Mike Pettine of the Jets or Keith Butler of the Steelers and switch to a 3-4 defense like the Packers did two seasons ago when they drafted B.J. Rali and Clay Matthews and hired Dom Capers. You see how that's worked out. Good luck! Go Phillies!!!

Why not make a play for Wannstedt or Dungy?? Mora, Davis and Jauron have to be the 3 least appealing candidates ever to be considered for a coordinator position. Well Philadelphia, you all seemed to ignore the fact that Oregon's defense had more talent than the Eagles this year and screamed for McDermott to be fired. Now here's your list of Miracle Workers to the rescue; Overrated, Underqualified and Outmatched!! If it's even possible for this defense to be worse than it was this year, any one of these guys can make it happen. But hey, as long as somebody got canned!

BrianDawkins20: Change your screenname please. Your complete lack of knowledge in all of your posts is a disgrace to the name on your jersey. You should call yourself RichKotite instead. Mora is a terrible choice. His defenses routinely underachieved and were ranked in the bottom 1/3 of the league in all 3 of his stops at San Fran, Atlanta, and Seattle. He'd be coaching high school ball or in sales if his pop wasn't Jim Mora. I'll tell you one thing...if Jauron (who I'm lukewarm on) takes the Browns job, who is left? Wannstadt? Mangini? Mora? Davis? Mangini is the most qualified, but he probably needs a break after being canned twice in three years. I'd take Wannstadt over the other 2.

i like the players the birds get in the 7th and late rounds, and walk ons. sometimes, it's the early round players (like qb, de, ol) that you gotta wonder about.

What has Jim Mora Jr. done that makes him such a great candidate to be the new defensive coordinator?

I don't think the three first round picks the Eagles have on their defensive line are "7th rounders and free agent rookies." It's better to base one's opinion on the facts rather than to shift the facts to fit one's opinion.
