McCoy has quad contusion; Eagles sign Scirrotto
Jeff McLane
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Running back LeSean McCoy missed practice with a quadriceps contusion, the Eagles said. The severity of the injury is unknown at this time but it does not appear to be serious.
A contusion, in layman's terms, is a bruise, and McCoy probably received one of those dings that many NFL players get nowadays because they often don't wear thigh pads.
McCoy said the injury occurred during Sunday morning's practice when, he thinks, Ernie Sims hit him. He continued to play and even took part in the afternoon session.
"It's just one of those things that happened," McCoy said Monday afternoon. "It hurt to run, but I'll be OK."
With McCoy out and Mike Bell nursing a calf strain, Eldra Buckley moved up to the first team and Martell Mallett played with the backups. Mallett even got some repetitions with the starters during a "live" red zone period in which the first team offense took on the first team defense.
It was the first time this camp that the starters faced off in a full-contact period. The result was a draw. The offense scored twice with Kevin Kolb passing to Mallett underneath and the tailback running into the end zone both times. The last score came on a shovel pass. Defensive end Juqua Parker read the play, but Mallett carried Parker and just crossed the line. Or did he? It was close and the defense protested. Eagles coach Andy Reid called it a touchdown. We'll check the tape.
Mallett hyperextended his left knee when the second team units butted heads. He went to the trainer's tent to get a look-see, but he was able to walk off the field. J.J. Arrington made an appearance at practice after missing the last week or so with a foot contusion. Chad Hall once again took reps with the running back during individual drills and played some halfback during team drills.
-- Speaking of contact, Ernie Sims still can't seem to decipher the meaning of the word. He thumped tight end Brent Celek during a non-contact drill, his fourth or fifth act of over-aggressiveness this camp.
"That all started the play before," Sims said. "Leonard Weaver came through the hole and he actually got across the goal line. Sean McDermott wasn't happy about it, so it put a little fire in us. The next play I took advantage of the opportunity and I took a shot on Celek. It's something that I got to probably tone down."
Reid gave Sims a tongue-lashing afterward as Celek lay on the ground.
"Coach Reid ... pretty much said to take care of your teammates," Sims said.
The linebacker said that he hadn't yet spoken to Celek.
"We're good," Sims said. "We're out here playing football. We're out here working hard. At the end of the day both of us understand that we got our goals."
Celek later said he had the wind knocked out of him.
"That's part of football. It's not a big deal," Celek said. "That stuff is going to happen in a game."
-- The Eagles finally signed a safety, inking Penn State alum and West Deptford, N.J. native Anthony Scirrotto after working him out earlier in the day. Safety Antoine Harris was thus placed on injured reserve. The Eagles had worked out three other safeties over the last two days but decided on the 6-foot, 202-pound Scirrotto.
Scirrotto spent time on the Giants practice squad in 2009, after initially signing with the Panthers as a rookie free agent.
-- Center Nick Cole (knee) was also absent from practice after returning briefly for Sunday's afternoon session. With Cole out, Mike McGlynn was back with the first team at center. Center Jamaal Jackson and guard Todd Herremans (foot) were in pads for the second day in a row.
Jackson, who is coming back from knee surgery, even did some sled-pushing. He left before the hitting started. Herremans did slightly more than he did Sunday, jumping in for a few plays during the full contact portion of practice.
-- Safety Quintin Demps (knee) was participating in the early portion of practice. He injured his knee in Friday's game against the Jaguars.
-- Also, the Eagles brought back defensive end Eric Moncor, who was released a few weeks ago. This is the third time this camp that the Eagles have released a player only to bring him back. Wide receiver Jared Perry and Mallett were let go and brought back within days, although Mallett's return had something to do with the waiver not going through the league office.
- Where is Braindawkins? I want her expert analysis along with the other 3 ladies from "The real housewives" dodofresh, wolf, and oppressed.
I hope Mr. Sims bashed the other players like he bashes his own teammates! KING~out thee~KING
I think they need to sit Sims before he knocks all our player out. ej610
Murrayag11 - "Maybe" that applies to knee pads however how the use of thigh pads affects speed and agility is not obvious to me. And yeah, I played the game and wore the gear. CarpGuy
TBEAR: Give briandawkins20 a break, it's his first year watching football. jimmyj
He'll join all the other PSU seconday guys on the fringes of the league, which is better than the QB's who don't even make it to the fringe! jimmyj- BW would be a special add in that capacity. johnnyu
Westy's done guys, if the Rams are the only team interested that sure says a lot. If he was smart he'd hang em up before his next concussion. brs50
Westbrook suggestion by JMC a good idea. Banner & Co are probably pursuing Tony Hunt instead to fill backup RB needs. mick314
If I wasn't sure before, I am NOW...'briandawkins20' can't be over 8 years old. It's good to be a fan young fellah, but you have more nonsensical things to say than some poor 'ol Mutts fan. Look kid, Jamaal is 30, and trying to come back from a SEVERE knee injury. When he does try and come back too early, and I am sure he will TRY....he'll be lucky if he doesn't end his career during his first game. That injury takes 18-24 MONTHS to heal properly. Well meaning, but basically unintelligent thoughts like yours do not serve his, and more importantly, our Iggles needs. TBear
CarpGuy, flexibility = speed and agility Murrayag11
Re-sign Westy for one year-league minimum. Use him for kick-off and punt teturns and in a limted reserved 3rd down role like we did when we had Brian Mitchell. it's a better option than Eldra Buckley and Mike Bell... jmcginle
I cannot fathom why RB's play w/o thigh pads. Is the perceived enhanced flexibilty/"freedom" worth the potential injury?? And don't get me started on protection for the knees. That's really become passe' for DB's, WR's and TE's. CarpGuy- Just because JJ is participating (I use that word loosely) in practice at this point, doesn't mean he is ready to play full time in a game. Remember what happened with Stacey Andrews last year when they rushed him back and their injuries happened at similar times in the previous season. ACL's take up to 18-24 months to be 100%, 9-12 months to be able to play at 90%. They can still put him on the PUP when the season starts and then bring him back for game 7. The PUP BEFORE training camp has no restricrictions and allows for extra players on the roster.
Hall would be a good insurance policy for our back corps. He showed me something in Friday's game, and he's versatile. With the injuries mounting up on our backs, he's at least a good candidate for the practice squad. dlscholt
If JJ was not in the early season plans, The Eagles would have left him on the PUP list. They could have started the season with that designation and he would be able to come back for Game 7. He must be ahead of that schedule. tommy_the_k
Jamaal Jackson will be ready for the season opener folks. Hopefull McCoy will be back soon. briandawkins20
I hope JJ comes back soon. That injury killed them vs Dallas. dragoon6
Liked what I saw from Mallett last Friday. tornadoh
Boston, you know nothing about ACL's, bring him back by game 3 would be a big mistake. craig123- JJ will be back before midseason. he'll be back within first 3 games unless he has a setback.
Maybe there trying to make sure they don't overuse him. I'm afraid with Bell now staying healthy which means Buckly is main back if McCoy goes down. When final cuts go down I won't be surprised if Eagles pick up a veteran rb then howardp- Nice to hear Jamaal is working out with the team. Seems that a return by the middle of the season is a real possibility if he is already in pads and pushing a sled in August.
