Mayock's take on guards and centers
NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, a Newtown Square resident, will break down each position in advance of the draft for Daily News readers. Here is Part 6 with his take on the interior offensive linemen:
BEST
David DeCastro, Stanford
6-4 7/8, 316
Arm: 32 ¾
40-yard dash: 5.43
225-bench: 34
Projected Round: 1 (picks 11-20)
Mayock: ``He's a legitimate plug-and-play guard starting Day 1. I love everything about him. Except - and this is a minor concern - he can struggle with big bodies over him. He's a great puller. A great angle blocker. But he can occasionally get overwhelmed by a big body. That's just a matter of getting stronger. Eventually, he might get kicked inside to center. He's smart, tough.''
RISER
Brandon Brooks, Miami (Ohio)
6-4 5/8, 353
Arm: 33 ½
40-yard dash: 4.95
225-bench: 36
Projected Round: 2-3
Mayock: ``This is a kid who was not even invited to the combine. I have no idea why not. He's got a freakish body and ran a sub-5.0 forty. I saw him at the East-West game and was stunned that he didn't get a combine invite. Now he could go in the second or third round. His rise has been meteoric. He's going to be a starting guard in the league.''
SLEEPER
Jason Slowey, Western Oregon
6-3, 310
Arm: NA
40-yard dash: 4.95
225-bench: 38
Projected Round: Free agent
Mayock: ``He's a tackle who I think is going to move inside to center. He won't get drafted. He's off the radar. I got a tip on the kid and went and watched tape and thought he was a really aggressive, tough kid. He has shorter arms, which is why he'll get kicked inside. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he made a team."
