Mayock: Reid deserves to remain Eagles coach

POSTED: Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 10:53 AM

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock concedes some trepidation about calling Thursday night's game between the Eagles and Seattle.

A Haverford School graduate and Newtown Square resident, Mayock said he is a little bit nervous about how to explain the current situation in Philadelphia to a national audience.

"I'm excited about doing a hometown game," he told Sports Illustrated's Peter King during a podcast this week. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. A part of me feels a little nervous about how to conveny what's going in Philadelphia and what the fair thing is and what's going to happen here next year and all those things. There is a lot more than meets the eye and I think it has to be handled with respect."

As for next year, though, Mayock is among those who think Andy Reid deserves to keep his job and return for another season.

"Philadelphia is a passionate city. I grew up here in West Philadelphia and I can say that. I understand it. It's Super Bowl win or bust. That's the attitude and I get it.

"What I try to tell people all the time is, there are 27 or 28 other NFL citieis that would give anything to have had the record Andy Reid has had the last 12 years. It seems like every year, he's in the final 4 or the final 6. The analogy I use is if you had 32 salesmen in the company and you have on guy who's a star but not a superstar and every year he finishes in the top 3, 4,5, are you going to fire him or pat him on the back and tell him to keep working hard and trying to get him to No. 1 ... They've got 5 games left, and think you find out a lot about people in these last five weeks. There are going to be some people that bail and there are going to be some peope that have just signed contracts and are new to town and don't really care and are gonig look around and say the grass is greener. We are going to find out a lot about exactly who cares and who doesn't in this organization over the next five games.

"I think Andy Reid deserves a second go-round ... May there be some changes in that staff? Maybe. At the end of the day, I think this guy deserves the opportunity to work it out moving forward."

As for King's view, "I've always thought if the players are still listening to you, if you're runnig a controlled ship, you're fine. You can withstand a real bad year, which is what they're going through this year. If you start having coaches arguing on the sidelines and have to bench your star receiver because you sense he's maybe not trying or giving it 100 percent, now my thought is a little bit difrerent and a little bit more open-minded.

"All along, I've said the Eagles could go 2-14 and I wouldn't fire Andy Reid. I think he's too good a coach and he's done too much. Bill Cowher in Year 13 was 6-10 ... and two years later he's holding the Super Bowl trophy. I'm not saying that will happen with the Eagles. I don't know what's going to happen. ... I think Reid deserves an absolute rotten year."

Maylock is kissing Reid's fat behind ...again....he brings up the old Cowher comparison again...how about comparing Reid to Tomlin who has won a Super Bowl in only his SECOND YEAR... or McCarthy who has won a Super Bowl in his FOURTH YEAR and maybe again this season ...or Sean Peyton who has won a Super Bowl in his FOURTH YEAR and maybe again this season... How about Harbaugh who was coaching a COLLEGE team last season, and now his 49ers are in FIRST PLACE...Andy Reid has ZERO Super Bowl wins in THIRTEEN YEARS...YIKES...and now Reid has the most talented DREAM TEAM and yet Reid is in LAST PLACE...no more excuses for Reid by his media buddies....Eagles fans want to FIRE REID..period.

So many people in Philadelphia are front runners and, at the end of the day, are simply losers. The folks that are calling for Andy Reid's head are the same "fans", albeit a generation older, who wanted Mike Schmidt's scalp while he was on the way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I was there and I saw it for myself.

This was a bad year all around. But Andy has not tossed any player under the proverbial bus and has calmly faced the press and the pressure. Give him a decent draft (a MLB clone of Bill Bergey and such) and the requisite mini-camps and preseason preparation and the Eagles will be right there at the head of the division and pushing for glory in the Super Bowl.

And the idiots who love to complain about everything and remember nothing will be drinking their beer and doing the things that buffoons do in this City of Semi-Brotherly Love.

Give him a decent draft, are you freakin serious? He is the one who makes the final decisions on the players that are drafted. He is the one who picks the players.

I used to respect Mike Mayock's opinion! A second go round, Mike are you crazy? Reid's been here 13 years and his arrogance is at an all time high. His decision to promote Juan Castillo to DC will go down as one of the dumbest appointments in NFL History. That alone would justify the Defensive Players quitting on Reid. Andy quit on them before the season even started. Sorry Mike but Andy has to go!

Jeffrey Laurie will surprise us all and fire Andy, but then promote Juan Castillo as head coach....just our luck.

Unfortunately, Mayock's and King's analysis are off. Yes, Reid has had some very good years, but if you look at those years, he had a slew of defensive talent that was put together by Ray Rhodes and he had one of the best defensive coordinators in the game. The Eagles Defense was always in the top 5 in points allowed, which gave a very untalented offense the ability to win games with McNabb, and yes, people forget that McNabb was basically the only weapon this team had until Westbrook. Since Ray Rhode's players got old and Jim Johnson's death, Reid has been really mediocre. He had the one fluke year where he made the title game at 9-7 (Johnson's last year) and has done little else since that superbowl appearance in 2004. Don't get me wrong, the guy is a decent coach who had the forethought to hire a really great assistant in Johnson. We have seen, though, over the last several years, that much of Reid's success is directly tied to Jim Johnson. Long story short, it's time for him to go.

Reid is great after bye weeks, so let's do him a favor and say "bye."

It's time for the Andy Reid show to move on, take on a new team and go into the booth. Andy has too many faults. He and Laurie tho, are great friends, apparently. Otherwise, I think he'd be gone by now. If Laurie evaluates him on the current rooster and record of non-achievement, he goes. But if he (Lurie)uses all 13 years, he (Reid)stays.

Laurie should make his evaluation on the most recent years, not the past, which is not exactly the best either in regard to time management, player selection, gaping holes where there is no satisfactory player on the rooster.

He should be fired for offering MVick an absurd contract. MVick is prone to injury and forcing passes into interceptions. Finally, when no experienced defensive coach wanted the coordinator job because of the intended defense that Andy wanted, he made Juan Castile the Def Coordinator. How's these things working for the Eagles?

I'm totally disinterested in the Eagles now and for the future as long as Andy is the coach. Imagine the offseason and the first round draft pick - another McDougle or Brandon Graham - or maybe even they will trade down. Then more experimentation going in to the beginning of the season - another slow start - year after year after year. Is that all we have to look forward to? No thanks...

Philly gang please dont blame Andy for this woeful team it all comes from the top gun Def Jeff Lurie, lets go back 13 yrs ago when we were hoping with deep trust that Jeff would bring in a winner not weiner, when Dick Vermile was interviewd for the position and left angry i could feel the bad vibes them a guy with no skills at aast or head coaching exp gets the job i knew we were doomed the sale was made
tell me would you give your 18yr old the keys to the Rolls Royce and say have fun, the man is just a QB coach has never grown into his position as head of anything but the Chuck Wagon Prime Rib anyone
    Def Jeff is serving caio

The problem with the eagles is not Reid it is lack of leadership by the players. McCoy, Maclin, Vick, Jackson, Celek, Cole are very good players but they are not leaders. They traded their good leaders like Dawkins, Stewart Bradley, Akers, or even Mcnabb at times. Dawkins once said to the defense in a game against Kansas City in the second quarter "no more touchdowns." After that KC did not score another touchdown. And now Dawkins is inspiring the Denver defense and Akers leads the league in kicking.

The no experience D-coordinator hire I think was a past colleague and Reid certainly had executive approval.

Of course the D-secondary has been a disaster.

As someone who left Philly years ago after being born and raised there, I know why I never came back. You all suck. Can you please name me one other coach who took the Eagles to more than one championship? Who has had a contending team year after year. Who takes responsibility for his team when they drop passes, miss tackles and make stupid mistakes. Yeah, didn't think so. I have defended my home town for so long, but not any more. Yeah, fire him, maybe we can get Ray Rhodes back. Negadelphia reigns supreme!

I've been an Eagles fan for years before all of you jumped on the bandwagon and anybody calling for Reid's ouster is just a fool.
He's the best coach that the Eagles have ever had and one of the top coaches in the league. If you don't see that, find another team.
    Get real.
