Mayock: Reid deserves to remain Eagles coach

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock concedes some trepidation about calling Thursday night's game between the Eagles and Seattle.
A Haverford School graduate and Newtown Square resident, Mayock said he is a little bit nervous about how to explain the current situation in Philadelphia to a national audience.
"I'm excited about doing a hometown game," he told Sports Illustrated's Peter King during a podcast this week. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. A part of me feels a little nervous about how to conveny what's going in Philadelphia and what the fair thing is and what's going to happen here next year and all those things. There is a lot more than meets the eye and I think it has to be handled with respect."
As for next year, though, Mayock is among those who think Andy Reid deserves to keep his job and return for another season.
"Philadelphia is a passionate city. I grew up here in West Philadelphia and I can say that. I understand it. It's Super Bowl win or bust. That's the attitude and I get it.
"What I try to tell people all the time is, there are 27 or 28 other NFL citieis that would give anything to have had the record Andy Reid has had the last 12 years. It seems like every year, he's in the final 4 or the final 6. The analogy I use is if you had 32 salesmen in the company and you have on guy who's a star but not a superstar and every year he finishes in the top 3, 4,5, are you going to fire him or pat him on the back and tell him to keep working hard and trying to get him to No. 1 ... They've got 5 games left, and think you find out a lot about people in these last five weeks. There are going to be some people that bail and there are going to be some peope that have just signed contracts and are new to town and don't really care and are gonig look around and say the grass is greener. We are going to find out a lot about exactly who cares and who doesn't in this organization over the next five games.
"I think Andy Reid deserves a second go-round ... May there be some changes in that staff? Maybe. At the end of the day, I think this guy deserves the opportunity to work it out moving forward."
As for King's view, "I've always thought if the players are still listening to you, if you're runnig a controlled ship, you're fine. You can withstand a real bad year, which is what they're going through this year. If you start having coaches arguing on the sidelines and have to bench your star receiver because you sense he's maybe not trying or giving it 100 percent, now my thought is a little bit difrerent and a little bit more open-minded.
"All along, I've said the Eagles could go 2-14 and I wouldn't fire Andy Reid. I think he's too good a coach and he's done too much. Bill Cowher in Year 13 was 6-10 ... and two years later he's holding the Super Bowl trophy. I'm not saying that will happen with the Eagles. I don't know what's going to happen. ... I think Reid deserves an absolute rotten year."

Trading McNabb answered 2 questions: how would McNabb do w/o Reid and Reid w/o McNabb. Clearly, McNabb's career was enhanced by Reid's system. But what's become equally clear is that McNabb was not, as many suspected, the spanner in Reid's offensive machine. Most of the familiar season-killers that fans have endured during the Reid era--indefensible play-calling, poor clock management, a system that beats up quarterbacks--continue to hold this team back despite wholesale changes in players and coaches. Reid is the constant. Reid's philosophy doesn't work. And though Eagles fans are passionate, they are smarter than "Super Bowl win or bust." The fans are fed up with Reid's Eagles' lack of improvement. The fans are looking for some measure of accountability that restores meaning to the mantra "we need to do better." PhillyExpat- That "we need to do better" is ALL Fat Andy's! No one wants that mantra in this town because of him.

I am not sure what the diehard Coach Reid fans see. I know Coach Reid is a good Coach, I don't doubt that, but it has been 13 years and there is still no Super Bowl Trophies sitting in the case. How many more years do you give him? To me the last 13 years haven't been that special. They all ended up with losses. I believe Coach Reid is coming back next year. I don't believe they will fire him, but with the drafts the last few years I don't think things will be any different than the last 13 years. golson@florida
Mayock, you are wrong. Andy goes now. A lot of posters have given reasons, mine is his total nonsensical abandon of the run! phillynupe4
Reid gets one more year to make a deep run. HOWEVER, his D-coord needs to go - NOW!
If they do not get a pro-bowl Linebacker then they are all done...period. cheesefry
Mayock is not worth a comment. tulsaphil- maylock is right. andy deserves a second chance. he got in his second year. he does not deserve a 14th shot. im interested in championships. 11 wins (or 8) does not satisfy me as a fan. jb99
"deserves a second go-around"?!?! this is his 13th season!! Old German- Maybe they meant he should get a "second century go-around"?

Count the number of different coaches who have won Super Bowl rings in Andy's reign of mediocrity.....you complacent "settlors" are afraid of success or you would join in the cry to replace him....Winners want winners.....losers and settlelors love the status quo.....How many years are enough koolade drinkers....or does it even matter to you.... nuggett
Dallas fan here ... Reid is a fine coach. I've defended him here a few times thru the years. In fact, at one time I thought he was in the top 3 of the league. However, it appears he has lost this team. It has been many years since I can remember an Eagle team in such disarray. The sad part is, he is a great coach with great talent that has not responded to him. I am afraid that you Eagle fans have a case of the children running the schoolhouse. If that is the case, it is doubtful that a new coach will do any better. Good luck with it 'cause the Philly/Dallas rivalry is something we all enjoy. rwa
I trust and value the opinion of the majority of posters here on this site rather the national sports media who, despite what they'll tell us, are not in tuned to every team like we are to this team, with the exception of Sal Palaontonio and locally Ray Didinger and Brian Baldinger. I've always heard the national types tell us on their broadcasts how Andy told them this and that prior to the game....what Andy Reid was that? The one we've seen and heard for 13 years is a withdrawn and surly person when interviewed by the local media. The point is, these national types are buddy buddy with every coach and do not want to step out and offer an honest evaluation of a coach when they depend on that coach for a quote or an interview. And because of that, should be looked at as having little or no credibility to the viewer. They are nothing but a shill. It seems a lot of writers in this town are now getting brave, offering honest opinions on a subject we have all known so well for so many years, as if we didn't know. Nice for them to join the party......... DelawareRiverRat
I look at the comments that Mayock is making, especially the "deserves a second go-around" remark and wonder exactly what Reid and his coaching staff have been given numerous times by now. I might give Reid that same benefit of the doubt, except he seems to have lost complete control of this team, highlighted by two of his coaches having a public spat on the sideline of last game. Not to mention, his complete intransigence towards changing the offensive strategy, regardless of how many times his own team has proven his pass-happy logic tragically flawed. Lastly, Reid has shown himself to be a gambler rather than a risk taker. A risk taker would mitigate some of his more tenuous decisions where Reid bet the farm in promoting Castillo. If a long-shot gamble pays off, you are lucky, not visionary. When it doesn't you are ordinary and you lose the farm. Andy, thanks for the years - you need to go PH1990
No way should Philly have to withstand the constant disregard for Andy Bleed's lack of change in plays for one more year! No way should Philly fans have to listen to his "let-me-clear-my-throat-non-answers" for one more year! The time for Fat Andy to go should be THIS year! He's had his chances and the Eagles are none the better for it. His players have checked out of this season. The wheels have fallen off of this "dream team". The Philly fans have spoken!! Panthro2011
